Rather than repeat a fixed combo, use empowered abilities as they appear, keep Valor Cyclone active when your Courage allows, and avoid spending the resource so freely that you cannot sustain the toggle.
How Vanguard’s combat loop works
Wind Knight is a lance-wielding DPS class, and Vanguard is one of its two specializations. Its defining challenge is responding to random ability activations while managing Courage, the resource used by its skills and steadily drained by Valor Cyclone. Prydwen Institute’s Vanguard guide, last updated January 24, 2026, describes the specialization as difficult because those enhanced abilities require timely reactions.

Think in priorities, not a memorized rotation. The next best action can change when an ability becomes empowered, and Courage levels affect whether you can keep Valor Cyclone running. Build and maintain Sharp stacks as part of the loop; they are something to build up and preserve, not a resource to spend indiscriminately.
Vanguard ability priorities
- Use available empowered abilities promptly. Random activations change your priority, so watch for them rather than continuing a preset sequence.
- Maintain Valor Cyclone when Courage supports it. It is a toggle that continuously drains Courage, so turning it on is not a one-time cost. Avoid letting other casts leave you unable to sustain it.
- Use Gale Thrust carefully. Avoid spending Courage on non-free casts when that would undermine Valor Cyclone. Spending can make sense if you would otherwise overcap Courage.
- Manage Galeform charges. Keep one charge cycling on cooldown and hold the other for a low-Courage moment, according to Prydwen’s priority guidance.
- Use Typhoon Cleave to recover Courage. Use the first charge when it is available; time the second for low Courage or use it before a charge risks expiring.
These priorities are flexible, not a strict opener or fixed rotation. In practice, check for an empowered ability, assess whether Valor Cyclone can be sustained, and then choose a charge or Courage-spending action that fits the current resource level.

How to manage Courage and Sharp stacks
Courage is both something you spend on abilities and the resource Valor Cyclone drains over time. That makes resource discipline central: an ability cast can have an immediate benefit but leave too little Courage for the sustained toggle. Typhoon Cleave helps restore Courage, while the Galeform charge held in reserve can be useful when Courage is low.
Sharp stacks are another upkeep consideration. Build and maintain them as the fight progresses rather than treating them as a spendable resource. Because ability activations are random and Courage fluctuates, the useful habit is to reassess after each empowered skill or recovery opportunity instead of following an unchanging sequence.
Should you use auto-play?
Prydwen does not recommend full auto for Vanguard: the specialization depends on reacting to enhanced skills, and auto-play does not dodge attacks or account for encounter mechanics. Semi-auto can help execute enhanced abilities quickly, but it gives up some control. If you use it, stay ready to handle dodging and mechanics yourself.
Build basics and the limits of gear advice
Prydwen’s endgame recommendations balance Haste, Versatility, and Crit and include priorities for individual gear slots. Those recommendations assume Level 140/150 set gear and a Level 150 Relic Weapon, so they are not universal starter-build instructions. Use them as endgame guidance only if your character and gear match those assumptions.
