Open xbox.com/play in Safari, Chrome, or Edge, sign in with an account that has eligible Game Pass access, connect a compatible controller, and select a cloud-playable game. If you own an Xbox console, Xbox Remote Play at xbox.com/remoteplay is a separate alternative.
The official way to play Xbox Game Pass on a Mac
On a Mac, the supported Xbox Game Pass workflow is to stream games through a web browser with Xbox Cloud Gaming. Open xbox.com/play in Safari, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge, sign in with the Microsoft account connected to an eligible Game Pass plan, pair a compatible controller, and choose a game marked as available for cloud play.

The game runs on remote Xbox hardware; your Mac receives the video and audio stream and sends your controller input back to the service. You do not install the console version of the game in macOS.
If you own an Xbox console, there is a second option: Xbox Remote Play. It streams a game installed on your own console through xbox.com/remoteplay. Remote Play and Cloud Gaming are separate services and have different requirements.

What you need
- A Mac with a supported, up-to-date web browser.
- Safari, Chrome, or Microsoft Edge.
- A Microsoft/Xbox account with eligible Game Pass access.
- A compatible controller for most games.
- A stable internet connection. Xbox gives 20 Mbps as a best-performance target for PCs and tablets; this is guidance, not a guarantee of low latency or perfect image quality.
- A game that is available for cloud streaming in your region and on your plan.
Plan names, regional access, game catalogs, and cloud features can change. Check the current Xbox plan and cloud-gaming library after signing in rather than relying on an old list of Game Pass games.
How to play Game Pass games on a Mac with Xbox Cloud Gaming
- Check your account and subscription. Use the Microsoft account that owns the Game Pass access. A Game Pass subscription does not automatically make every Xbox title cloud-playable, and access can vary by plan, region, game, and platform. Some free-to-play games may have different access rules.
- Open a supported browser. Launch Safari, Chrome, or Edge and go to xbox.com/play.
- Sign in. Select the sign-in option and use the Xbox/Microsoft account associated with your subscription or game rights.
- Connect a controller. Pair an Xbox controller over Bluetooth or connect a compatible controller with a cable. Most console-style cloud games are designed for controller input.
- Find a cloud-playable game. Select a title that shows cloud-play availability or browse the current cloud-gaming library. Do not assume that every game in the Game Pass catalog can be streamed.
- Start the game and test the controls. If the title does not launch, check the account, subscription, region, game availability, browser, and controller before changing your Mac or network equipment.
Which Xbox controller works with a Mac?
Apple documents Mac support for several Xbox controller families, including Xbox Wireless Controller model 1708, Xbox Series S and Series X controllers, the Xbox Elite Wireless Controller Series 2, and the Xbox Adaptive Controller. Exact compatibility can vary by controller revision, macOS version, firmware, and connection method.
For the most straightforward setup, an Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth is the most directly relevant accessory for browser-based cloud gaming. Pairing it with macOS is handled through Bluetooth, not through a separate Xbox Mac application.

Pair an Xbox controller over Bluetooth
- Turn on the controller.
- Hold the controller’s Connect button until the Xbox logo begins flashing, indicating pairing mode.
- On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth.
- Find the controller in the nearby-device list and select it.
- Return to the Xbox Cloud Gaming browser tab and test the controls.
If Bluetooth is unreliable, connect the controller with a compatible USB cable. Depending on the Mac and controller, you may need a USB adapter. Keep macOS and the controller firmware current if pairing or input problems continue.

Internet requirements and how to reduce lag
Cloud gaming depends on more than the number shown by a speed test. Xbox identifies connection quality, location, device, and other network conditions as performance factors. Its guidance lists 10 Mbps as a minimum for mobile devices and 20 Mbps for PCs and tablets as a best-performance target. A fast connection can still feel poor if latency, Wi-Fi interference, packet loss, or network congestion is high.
For the best chance of a stable stream:
- Use a stable 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection when available.
- Use wired Ethernet if your Mac and network setup support it.
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, and other high-bandwidth activity.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi access point and test again.
- Close unnecessary applications and browser tabs if the Mac is under heavy load.
- Try the Mac on another network to determine whether the problem is local to your connection.
These steps improve the conditions around a cloud-gaming session, but no particular Wi-Fi configuration guarantees smooth play. The physical distance between you and the service, regional availability, and temporary service conditions also matter.
Xbox Remote Play on a Mac: the console-owner option
Xbox Remote Play is useful when you own an Xbox console and want to stream from that console to your Mac. Visit xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser and follow the sign-in and connection prompts.

Can you stream Xbox games you own?
Xbox supports streaming select owned games for Game Pass Ultimate members even when those games are not currently included in the Game Pass catalog. This does not mean that every Xbox game you have purchased can be streamed.
The title must be supported for cloud play, and availability can depend on the game, platform, region, plan, and current Xbox features. Use the cloud-play indicator and the current Xbox library as the authority for a particular purchase.
What you cannot do on a Mac
Do not download the Windows Xbox PC app expecting it to install on macOS. Xbox documents that native PC app for Windows 10 and Windows 11, while its Mac-specific instructions direct users to a browser at Xbox.com/play.
Cloud Gaming also does not install the game locally on your Mac. If local installation is essential, you need a separately supported native macOS release, a Windows PC, or another compatible platform. A Game Pass subscription by itself does not turn the Mac into a Windows Xbox gaming PC.

Troubleshooting Xbox Cloud Gaming on a Mac
The game is missing from the library
- Check that you are signed in to the account with the eligible Game Pass plan or game rights.
- Confirm that the game is cloud-playable rather than merely included in the broader Game Pass catalog.
- Check regional availability and the current plan requirements.
- Search the current Xbox cloud library instead of relying on an old catalog article.
The page loads, but the game will not start
- Confirm the account and subscription.
- Check that the title is available in your region and on your plan.
- Make sure a compatible controller is connected.
- Try Safari, Chrome, and Edge one at a time.
- Sign out and back in if the account state appears stale.
- Reload the page and try a different cloud-playable title.
Xbox names Safari, Chrome, and Edge in its browser guidance, but behavior may differ between macOS releases and browser versions.
The stream is blurry, stuttering, or laggy
- Check connection stability, not just download speed.
- Switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet.
- Stop downloads, backups, video streams, and other competing traffic.
- Move closer to the router or access point.
- Test another network.
- Try another supported browser.
If video remains stable but controls stop responding, the controller connection is a more likely cause than the internet stream. Re-pair the controller or test it with a cable.
The controller is not detected
- Confirm that the controller supports Bluetooth, or use a compatible USB cable.
- Turn the controller off and back on.
- Hold the Connect button to enter pairing mode again.
- In System Settings > Bluetooth, remove the existing controller entry if necessary.
- Pair it again and reload the Xbox game.
- Update macOS and controller firmware if the issue persists.
Optional 2026 cloud-gaming web preview
In January 2026, Xbox announced a refreshed cloud-gaming web experience in public preview. After signing in at Xbox.com/play, eligible users can access the preview through settings, or visit play.xbox.com. This preview is optional and is not required for the standard Mac setup. Preview features can change or behave differently from the regular web experience, so use the standard Xbox.com/play route if you want the least experimental workflow.
Quick decision guide
- You have a Mac and an eligible Game Pass plan: use Xbox Cloud Gaming at Xbox.com/play.
- You own an Xbox and the game is installed there: consider Xbox Remote Play at Xbox.com/remoteplay.
- You own a game that is not in Game Pass: check whether it is one of the select owned titles Xbox currently supports for cloud streaming.
- You want a local macOS installation: look for a separate Mac release or use a supported Windows or console platform; the Windows Xbox PC app is not a Mac app.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I install the Xbox Game Pass PC app on a Mac?

Can I stream every Xbox game I own to my Mac?
No. Only select purchased games support cloud streaming for eligible Game Pass Ultimate members, and availability depends on the title, region, platform, plan, and current Xbox catalog. Check the cloud-play indicator for the specific game.
Do I need an Xbox controller to play Game Pass games on a Mac?
A compatible controller is required for most supported games. Pair a supported Xbox controller through macOS Bluetooth, or connect one by a compatible cable.
How fast does my internet need to be for Xbox Cloud Gaming on Mac?
Xbox lists 10 Mbps as minimum guidance for mobile devices and 20 Mbps as a best-performance target for PCs and tablets. Stability, latency, Wi-Fi interference, location, and network congestion matter as well, so those figures do not guarantee a smooth stream.

What is the difference between Xbox Cloud Gaming and Remote Play?
Remote Play streams a game installed on your own Xbox console. Cloud Gaming runs an eligible title on Microsoft’s remote Xbox hardware, so you do not need to install that game on your personal console.
The Bottom Line
For most Mac users, the answer is simple: open xbox.com/play in Safari, Chrome, or Edge, sign in with an eligible account, connect a compatible controller, and launch a title marked for cloud play. Use Remote Play instead when you want to stream a game installed on your own Xbox console.
