If your Steam Deck runs SteamOS, the practical way to use Xbox Game Pass is Xbox Cloud Gaming through a Microsoft Edge shortcut. The games stream from Microsoft’s servers; they are not installed on the Deck. Native PC Game Pass downloads through the official Xbox app are not officially supported on SteamOS. For local PC Game Pass play, use Windows on the Deck or stream from a separate Windows PC.

This guide covers the dependable SteamOS setup, its limitations, and the alternatives for offline or locally installed games.

Choose the right method

What you want Best option Main compromise
Simple SteamOS setup Xbox Cloud Gaming through Edge Requires internet and a cloud-enabled plan
Offline PC Game Pass games Install Windows on the Deck More complex OS, driver, storage, and battery experience
Keep SteamOS and play PC Game Pass Stream from a Windows gaming PC Requires another computer to be running or reachable
Experiment with Linux support Xodus Early-stage and unreliable for a primary setup

What “Game Pass on Steam Deck” means

Xbox Cloud Gaming runs supported Xbox games remotely and sends the video stream to your Deck. It is the method described in Microsoft’s Steam Deck instructions.

PC Game Pass normally provides Windows PC downloads through the Xbox app and Microsoft Store. That catalog is not a native SteamOS installation, and Xbox Play Anywhere entitlements do not automatically create a Linux version.

Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner

Cloud access depends on your subscription, region, device, and game. Xbox currently lists Ultimate, Premium, and Essential as cloud-enabled plans, but plan features and availability can change. Check the live plan comparison before subscribing. Some supported free-to-play cloud games, such as Fortnite, may not require a Game Pass subscription.

What you need

  • A Steam Deck running the standard SteamOS installation.
  • A Microsoft account.
  • A Game Pass plan with cloud gaming access, unless using an eligible free-to-play cloud title.
  • A game available for cloud streaming in your region and plan.
  • A controller. The Deck’s built-in controls work after applying the recommended Steam layout.
  • A reliable internet connection. Xbox lists 10 Mbps as a minimum, says some devices may need 20 Mbps for best quality, and recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi.
  • A keyboard and mouse are strongly recommended for the initial Desktop Mode setup, although the touchscreen, trackpads, and on-screen keyboard can be used.

Cloud gaming requires an active connection and does not provide offline play.

How to set up Xbox Cloud Gaming on SteamOS

The following is Microsoft’s current Edge-based Steam Deck workaround. Microsoft notes that the Edge Flatpak is community maintained and that Microsoft does not officially support Edge on SteamOS.

1. Switch to Desktop Mode

  1. Press the Steam button.
  2. Select Power.
  3. Choose Switch to Desktop.

2. Install Microsoft Edge

  1. Open Discover Software Center from the desktop taskbar.
  2. Go to Applications > Internet > Web Browsers.
  3. Find Microsoft Edge and select Install.

Close Discover after installation.

3. Add Edge to Steam

  1. Open the application launcher.
  2. Go to Internet.
  3. Right-click Microsoft Edge and select Add to Steam.
  4. In the Add a Game window, select Edge and choose Add Selected Programs.

4. Allow Edge to access the Deck’s controls

  1. Open Application Launcher > System > Konsole.
  2. Enter this command:
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge

Press Enter, then type exit and press Enter to close Konsole. This grants the Edge Flatpak read-only access to /run/udev, which Microsoft says is needed for access to the Steam Deck controls. It does not install Game Pass or modify the entire operating system.

5. Configure the Steam shortcut

  1. Open Steam in Desktop Mode and go to Library.
  2. Find Microsoft Edge, right-click it, and select Properties.
  3. Rename the shortcut to Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta).
  4. In Launch Options, append the following after the existing @@u @@ text:
--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25 --device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

Do not replace the existing Flatpak parameters. The Xbox URL and the new arguments should come after them.

6. Apply the controller layout

  1. Right-click Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) in Steam Library.
  2. Select Manage > Controller layout.
  3. Choose Browse Configs.
  4. Under Templates, select Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
  5. Select Apply Configuration, then Done.

7. Return to Gaming Mode

  1. Use the desktop shortcut to Return to Gaming Mode.
  2. Open the new shortcut from the Non-Steam section of your Library.
  3. Sign in to Xbox Cloud Gaming with your Microsoft account.
  4. Choose a cloud-playable game and launch it.

The first launch may be easier with the touchscreen or trackpads. After the controller profile is applied, the shortcut should be usable from Gaming Mode with the Deck’s controls.

Optional: add Xbox artwork

Microsoft’s guide also provides Xbox_Cloud_Gaming_Banner.jpg, Xbox_Cloud_Gaming_Capsule.jpg, and Xbox_Cloud_Gaming_Icon.jpg. Copy the files to the Deck in Desktop Mode, such as into Documents, then use Steam’s shortcut and library artwork controls to set them. This changes only the presentation, not the functionality.

SteamOS troubleshooting

Edge is missing from Add a Game

  • Confirm Edge was installed from Discover.
  • Launch Edge once from the desktop.
  • Close and reopen Steam in Desktop Mode.
  • If the package or application ID has changed, do not blindly reuse the command above. Microsoft’s command specifically targets com.microsoft.Edge; verify the installed ID before changing it.

The shortcut opens Edge but not Xbox Cloud Gaming

Check that the launch options include:

--kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

Confirm the arguments were appended after the existing @@u @@ parameters rather than pasted before or in place of them.

The controls do not respond

  • Run the Flatpak override again.
  • Fully close and relaunch Edge.
  • Reapply Manage > Controller layout > Browse Configs > Templates > Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad.
  • Test the touchscreen or trackpads. If those work but the gamepad does not, the problem is likely the Steam controller profile or Edge’s device access.

A game asks for keyboard or mouse input

Use the right trackpad or touchscreen as a pointer and check that the Gamepad with Mouse Trackpad template is active. A Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse can help with menu-heavy games. Input behavior can differ between cloud titles.

We’ve added a dedicated Bluetooth antenna to improve connections for multiple controllers. Whether using the built-in trackpads or the included external controller, this allows for precision play in everything from FPS to complex strategy games.

The stream looks bad or feels delayed

  • Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi and move closer to the router.
  • Stop downloads and other high-bandwidth activity.
  • Use Ethernet through a compatible USB-C dock or adapter if practical.
  • Check that your connection meets Xbox’s 10 Mbps minimum; some devices may need 20 Mbps for better quality.

Download speed is not the whole story. Input delay depends on the Deck, Wi-Fi, home network, ISP, route to Microsoft’s servers, and cloud region. Even a fast connection can feel worse than a locally installed Steam game.

A Game Pass title is unavailable

A missing game may not support cloud play, may be unavailable in your region or plan, may have left the catalog, or may have separate Xbox and PC availability. Third-party launcher requirements and platform restrictions can also matter. Check the live cloud library and plan comparison rather than relying on a permanent list of games; Xbox says titles, features, and availability vary by time, region, plan, and platform.

Can you install PC Game Pass games directly on SteamOS?

Not through the official Xbox PC app. SteamOS does not currently have official native support for installing and running the PC Game Pass catalog locally. The Edge shortcut is a cloud-streaming launcher, not a way to install Xbox PC games, bypass Microsoft Store licensing, or turn Game Pass titles into native Steam games.

Install Windows on the Deck

Windows is the direct route for local PC Game Pass downloads. Install Windows using Microsoft’s Windows resources, install the Xbox app from the Xbox PC entry point, sign in, and download games locally.

This may involve dual-booting or replacing SteamOS, additional storage, and separate Steam Deck Windows drivers. Sleep, audio, controller support, battery life, and the handheld interface may require extra troubleshooting. It is not a risk-free upgrade to the SteamOS experience.

Stream from a Windows gaming PC

You can install PC Game Pass games on a Windows PC and use a remote-play solution to stream that PC to the Deck. This keeps SteamOS intact, but the Windows computer performs the rendering and must be powered on or remotely reachable. Network quality determines the result. This is remote PC streaming, not Xbox Cloud Gaming.

What about Xodus?

Xodus, from developers associated with Heroic Games Launcher, is an experimental open-source project attempting to bring Xbox PC and Game Pass functionality to Linux. Current reporting describes work involving Xbox authorization, license checks, MSIXVC packages, and Microsoft GDK-related runtime components. See Windows Central’s report and Tom’s Hardware’s coverage.

Xodus may eventually improve Linux access, but it is not a mature compatibility layer or official SteamOS support. Compatibility can be game-specific and may break when Microsoft changes authentication, packaging, or runtime behavior. It is not the mainline recommendation for dependable play today.

Other important limitations

Offline play

The SteamOS browser method cannot work offline. The game runs on Microsoft’s servers, so an active internet connection is required.

Games you own

Owning a game on Xbox or PC does not guarantee that it can be streamed through Xbox Cloud Gaming. Cloud availability is title-, platform-, region-, and plan-specific. Check the live Xbox cloud service for the game’s current status.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Chrome and other browsers

Microsoft’s Steam Deck procedure uses Edge and its Flatpak configuration. Another browser may open the website, but it is not the documented setup and may not provide the same controller access or kiosk behavior.

Bottom line

For a SteamOS Deck, set up Xbox Cloud Gaming in Microsoft Edge and add it to Steam as a non-Steam shortcut. That is the simplest current route, but it streams games and requires an eligible plan and reliable internet. For local or offline PC Game Pass downloads, use Windows on the Deck or stream from a Windows PC; do not mistake experimental Xodus development for official native support.
