You can play an Xbox-published game on PS5 only if that game has a native PlayStation release. Owning the Xbox edition does not let you install or run it on a PS5. Even when a game is available on both consoles, cross-play, cross-progression and purchase sharing are separate, game-specific features.
What “playing an Xbox game on PS5” means
Xbox publishing a game does not make its Xbox console edition compatible with PlayStation hardware. To play on PS5, the game must have a PS5 edition; check the game’s PlayStation Store listing or official platform page. Xbox’s 2024 announcement named PlayStation releases for Pentiment, Hi-Fi RUSH, Grounded and Sea of Thieves (Xbox Wire, February 21, 2024). Xbox later announced a PS5 release for Gears of War: Reloaded (Xbox Wire, May 5, 2025).
These are examples, not a full or live catalog. Confirm the game’s current PS5 listing before buying or downloading; announced availability can change, and an Xbox release alone is not evidence of a PS5 version.
How to check whether you can play a specific game
- Find the PS5 edition. Search the PlayStation Store for the exact game and check that the listing offers a PS5 version. If the game lists only Xbox platforms, there is no basis to expect its Xbox edition to run on PS5.
- Check cross-play separately. Look for an official feature statement that names the platforms you and your friends use. A PS5 release does not by itself mean PS5 players can join Xbox players.
- Check cross-progression or cross-save separately. Confirm whether the game carries progress between platforms and which account, if any, must be linked. Multiplayer cross-play does not necessarily move saves or progression.
- Check account requirements by feature. A game may allow cross-play without an extra account but require one for invitations or shared progression. Follow the current instructions for that title rather than assuming one game’s rules apply to another.
- Verify your purchase entitlement. Check the edition and platform named in your purchase and the game’s terms. A PS5 release does not establish that an Xbox purchase includes the PlayStation copy.

Do you need to buy the game again on PS5?
Do not assume an Xbox purchase includes a PS5 copy. The cited Xbox announcements describe Xbox and PlayStation releases but do not state that ownership transfers between those consoles. Check the exact edition and entitlement terms for the game; if they do not explicitly include PS5 access, treat the PlayStation edition as a separate purchase.
Can you play with Xbox friends or transfer your saves?
Only if the particular game supports the feature you need. Cross-play lets players on different platforms play together; cross-progression carries game progress between platforms. Neither follows automatically from a PS5 release. Grounded and Sea of Thieves are documented examples of Xbox-announced cross-play across named platforms. For Gears of War: Reloaded, Xbox said cross-play works without a Microsoft account, while signing in enables cross-progression and cross-platform invitations. Do not apply that account rule to another game.

Are Xbox releases on PS5 likely to continue?
Release plans are title-specific and can change. At its June 7, 2026 showcase, Xbox described Gears of War: E-Day and Clockwork Revolution as Xbox console exclusives and said previously announced multiplatform releases would continue as planned (Xbox Wire, June 7, 2026). That is a dated statement about the showcase and previously announced releases, not a promise that every Xbox game will come to PS5. Check the individual game’s latest official platform listing.
