Neither Xbox Series X nor PS5 is proven to be the universal better console for open-world games. Choose based first on the specific games and versions you want, then weigh your existing game library, disc needs, storage, and the current price of the exact model in your region. If performance is the deciding factor, compare controlled tests of the same game, version, and graphics mode; headline specifications alone cannot settle it.
Which console should you choose?
Start with the open-world games you most want to play and check each game’s current platform listing. Availability, release timing, and version can vary by title, so a console is only the practical winner for you if it provides access to the games you care about.
Then consider whether you already own compatible games, whether you need a disc drive, how much storage the model provides, and the total local cost. There is no verified like-for-like open-world performance comparison here that supports a general frame-rate, image-quality, or loading-time winner.
What do the published specifications tell you?
Microsoft lists the Xbox Series X GPU as a custom RDNA 2 design rated at 12 TFLOPS and lists 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. Sony’s CFI-21XX PS5 manual lists 10 TFLOPS of graphics capability and 16 GB of GDDR6 memory. These are manufacturer specifications, not measurements of how a particular open-world game runs.
#1 Best Overall
- FASTEST, MOST POWERFUL XBOX — Experience next-generation performance with 12 teraflops of processing power, delivering smoother gameplay, richer worlds, and faster responsiveness than any previous XBOX.
- TRUE 4K GAMING UP TO 120 FPS — Enjoy breathtaking visuals with true 4K resolution, HDR, and frame rates up to 120 FPS, plus hardware-accelerated ray tracing for a heightened level of realism.
- 1TB CUSTOM SSD AND XBOX VELOCITY ARCHITECTURE — Reduce load times dramatically with the custom 1TB NVMe SSD and XBOX Velocity Architecture, enabling lightning-fast performance and seamless world streaming.
- QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
- FOUR GENERATIONS OF GAMES — Play thousands of games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX, with many titles enhanced for better visuals and performance on XBOX Series X.
The higher Xbox headline TFLOPS figure does not by itself establish better frame rates, resolution, image quality, traversal performance, or fast-travel loading. The consoles use different hardware designs, and individual games can differ in graphics modes, patches, and optimization. For a meaningful performance decision, look for testing that identifies the same game, version, and graphics mode on both systems and reports its methodology.
Which open-world games can you play?
Compare the exact titles and versions you want rather than assuming availability from a publisher or studio’s history. For example, Xbox’s January 22, 2026 Developer Direct recap listed Fable for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Xbox Cloud, Steam, PS5, and Game Pass Ultimate, with an Autumn 2026 release window at the time of that recap. Check the current listing before making a purchase decision, since release information can change.

How do backward compatibility and discs differ?
Xbox Series X
Xbox says Series X|S can play Xbox One games as well as select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Compatibility depends on the specific title. If you own a disc, confirm that the game is supported and that the exact console model you are considering has a usable disc drive.

PS5
PlayStation’s compatibility guidance covers PS4 games on PS5. PS4 game discs cannot be used with a PS5 Digital Edition, so a disc-based PS4 library points toward a PS5 model with a disc drive. Confirm the exact current model configuration and the support status of each game before buying.
For either console, distinguish physical discs from digital licenses: owning one does not automatically mean you have the other. Check compatibility for the particular title and format you own.

How much storage and what kind of drive do you need?
Storage and disc-drive options vary by console configuration. The current Xbox product page lists Series X configurations with 1 TB, 1 TB digital, and 2 TB storage. Sony’s cited CFI-21XX manual lists 1 TB and 825 GB capacities across PS5 variants. These capacities do not guarantee the same usable free space after system software and installed games.
Check the storage and disc-drive details for the exact SKU before ordering; product names alone may not make the configuration clear. If you need more Xbox storage, Microsoft says supported Storage Expansion Cards match internal storage performance and are sold separately. Account for that accessory in your budget if the built-in capacity will not meet your needs.

How to make a fair performance comparison
- Choose the game and edition. Verify that the same title and relevant game version are available on both consoles.
- Match the graphics mode. Compare equivalent modes rather than a performance-focused option on one system against a higher-quality option on the other.
- Check the test method. Prefer a credible comparison that identifies its console models, game version, settings or mode, and measurement approach.
- Look beyond average frame rate. For open-world play, consider frame-rate stability, image quality, loading, and stutter during traversal where the test reports them.
- Apply the result only to that game and version. A finding for one title is not proof that the other console performs better across open-world games.
Compare the full buying decision
| Factor | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game access | Current platform listing, version, release timing, and any platform-specific features for each game you want. | A console’s value depends on the games you can actually play on it. |
| Existing library | Compatibility for each older game and whether your copy is a disc or digital license. | Backward compatibility and disc support are not identical across consoles or formats. |
| Measured performance | Controlled, same-game tests covering the same version and graphics mode. | Specifications alone do not show how a particular game runs. |
| Configuration | Storage capacity and whether the exact model has a usable disc drive. | Model variants can change what you can install or play from disc. |
| Total cost | Current local console price, game prices, subscriptions, and any storage expansion. | Regional prices and stock vary; compare the complete cost at the time you buy. |
Current regional prices and like-for-like open-world performance results are not established here, so neither factor can be scored fairly from the specifications alone. Check local model listings and prices when you are ready to buy.
