You can play Xbox games on a Steam Deck by streaming them: use Microsoft Edge for Xbox Cloud Gaming, or stream games from your own Xbox console with Remote Play. Microsoft documents the Cloud Gaming setup for Steam Deck; its Remote Play guidance covers supported devices generally but does not give Deck-specific setup steps.
Choose how you want to stream Xbox games

Cloud Gaming and Remote Play are different: the first streams from the cloud, while the second streams a game installed on your own console.
Set up Xbox Cloud Gaming with Microsoft Edge
Microsoft’s Steam Deck guide uses the Edge Flatpak installed through Discover, then adds it to Steam as a non-Steam item and configures it for the Deck’s controls. Follow Microsoft’s Xbox Cloud Gaming setup instructions for Steam Deck.
- Switch to Desktop mode. Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop.
- Install Edge. Open Discover Software Center, go to Internet or Web Browsers, find Microsoft Edge, and install it.
- Add Edge to Steam. Open the Application Launcher, locate Edge, and use the option to add it to Steam. Return to Steam and select the Edge shortcut.
- Grant access to Deck controls. Microsoft’s guide instructs users to run this terminal command to give Edge read-only access to
/run/udev:flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro com.microsoft.Edge. This is a system configuration change; use it only as described in Microsoft’s guide. - Configure the shortcut and start Cloud Gaming. Apply the shortcut settings in Microsoft’s guide, then launch the Xbox Cloud Gaming experience through Edge.
A keyboard and mouse can make setup easier, but they are optional. Microsoft says you can use the Deck’s touchscreen or trackpads; press STEAM+X to bring up the touch keyboard.

What Microsoft’s Edge support note means
Microsoft’s setup article cautions that “Microsoft does not actively maintain the Microsoft Edge Flatpak package and does not provide official support Microsoft Edge on SteamOS at this time.” It describes the instructions as intended for Steam Deck enthusiasts comfortable making system modifications. The guide explains a way to configure Edge for Cloud Gaming, but that should not be mistaken for official Edge support on SteamOS.
Use Xbox Remote Play from a console
Remote Play streams games installed on your Xbox console to supported devices. Xbox lists a console with Remote features enabled as a requirement and describes access from supported browser-enabled PCs, phones, and tablets. See Xbox Remote Play for its current requirements.

The Xbox guidance cited here does not spell out Steam Deck-specific Remote Play instructions. Do not treat Microsoft’s Edge Cloud Gaming setup as a Remote Play setup: it serves a different route and source for the game stream.

Whether a particular game will work through Cloud Gaming depends on current service terms and title and region availability. The cited setup guidance does not establish a subscription tier, supported game list, regional coverage, or compatibility guarantee for every Deck configuration. Check Xbox’s current service information for those details before subscribing or troubleshooting a title that is unavailable.
