How to play Xbox games on Fire TV
1. Check the Fire TV model
Confirm that the exact Fire TV generation is on Xbox’s supported list. This is the most important step because the Xbox app may not appear on an unsupported device, even if the device belongs to a similar product family.
2. Install the Xbox app
- From the Fire TV home screen, open the Appstore or app-search screen.
- Search for Xbox.
- Select the official Xbox app and choose Get, Download, or the equivalent install button.
- After installation, open the app.
If the Xbox app does not appear, do not assume that restarting or searching with a different spelling will solve the problem. First verify the exact Fire TV model, your region, and the device’s software updates.
3. Sign in with your Microsoft account
Follow the sign-in instructions shown by the Xbox app. Use the Microsoft account associated with your Game Pass plan if you have one. Depending on the current sign-in flow, the app may display a code or ask you to complete authentication on another device.

Signing in alone does not unlock every game. Most cloud games require an eligible Game Pass plan, and the individual title must support cloud play in your region and on your platform. Some supported free-to-play titles can have different access requirements.
4. Pair a Bluetooth controller
Xbox specifically names the Xbox Wireless Controller, Xbox Adaptive Controller, PlayStation DualSense, and DualShock 4 among compatible options for the Fire TV setup. Other controllers may work when they support the Bluetooth gamepad HID profile, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every third-party model.
The safest general-purpose choice is an Xbox Wireless Controller. It provides the familiar Xbox button labels, analog sticks, triggers, bumpers, and face-button layout that most Xbox games expect. A compatible DualSense or DualShock 4 is a sensible alternative if you already own one; Xbox button prompts may feel less intuitive because the labels and layout differ.
To pair a controller:
- Charge the controller and turn it on.
- Put it into Bluetooth pairing mode. On an Xbox controller, hold its pairing button until the Xbox logo begins flashing. For other controllers, use the model’s Bluetooth pairing procedure.
- On Fire TV, open Settings.
- Choose Controllers & Bluetooth Devices or the similarly named controller/Bluetooth settings page.
- Select Game Controllers or Other Bluetooth Devices, depending on the Fire OS version.
- Choose Add Bluetooth Devices and select the controller when it appears.
- Wait for Fire TV to report that the device is connected, then return to the Xbox app.
The Fire TV remote can navigate the television interface, but it generally lacks the sticks, triggers, bumpers, and multiple buttons required by Xbox games. Plan on using a full game controller.
5. Select a cloud-enabled game
Browse the Xbox app and choose a game that is marked as available for cloud play. Do not assume that every title in a Game Pass library can be streamed. Availability depends on the title, your plan, account, region, platform, and the current Xbox catalog.

6. Start the cloud session
Select the game’s cloud-play option and wait for the session to launch. There is no console download or local installation step. Once the session begins, the Fire TV receives a live video stream while your controller commands travel back to the cloud service.
What Xbox games can you play on Fire TV?
The accurate answer is: cloud-enabled Xbox games available through the Xbox app and your account’s current access. That is not the same as “all Xbox games.”
Xbox says select free-to-play games and many games in the Game Pass library can be played from the cloud, but the catalog changes over time. A title may be unavailable because it is not cloud-enabled, is excluded from your plan, is not offered in your region, or is not supported on the particular platform.

Xbox has also expanded cloud gaming beyond the original Game Pass-only model. Some eligible users can stream games they own through a “stream your own game” catalog. That does not mean every owned Xbox game can be streamed on Fire TV. Check the game’s current cloud-play listing in the Xbox app with the intended account.
Do you need Xbox Game Pass?
For most cloud-playable games, yes: you need an eligible Xbox Game Pass plan that includes cloud gaming in your market. Xbox’s plans, prices, included catalogs, and cloud-access rules change, so avoid relying on an old price or a fixed list of countries.
Some free-to-play games may be available with different requirements, but “free-to-play” does not make every Xbox title free to stream. The title must still be supported for cloud play and available in your region.

Best default: Xbox Wireless Controller
The Xbox Wireless Controller is the most straightforward recommendation for this setup because Xbox explicitly identifies it as compatible and its controls match Xbox on-screen prompts. Confirm that the particular controller and your Fire TV pairing method support Bluetooth; do not assume that every Xbox-branded accessory uses the same connection method.
If you already own a PlayStation controller
A PlayStation DualSense or DualShock 4 may be compatible with the Xbox Fire TV experience. Using one you already own can be more sensible than buying another controller. The main adjustment is the button layout: Xbox games may show Xbox-style prompts even though the physical controller uses PlayStation labels.
For accessibility-focused setups
The Xbox Adaptive Controller is an option for players who need a more flexible input arrangement. Xbox named it among the controllers compatible with the Fire TV cloud-gaming setup. The Xbox app does not appear in the Fire TV app store
- Verify the exact Fire TV model and generation.
- Check whether the device is a regional variant with different app availability.
- Install available Fire OS updates and restart Fire TV.
- Confirm that Xbox currently lists the device as supported in your market.

- Charge the controller and repeat its pairing procedure.
- Make sure it is not still connected to a console, phone, computer, or another television.
- Remove an old or duplicate pairing from Fire TV, then add the controller again.
- Open Fire TV’s controller/Bluetooth settings rather than trying to pair from inside the Xbox app.
- Confirm that the controller supports Bluetooth gamepad input, including the Bluetooth gamepad HID profile where applicable.
The game launches, but the buttons or sticks behave incorrectly
Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then check whether it has automatically reconnected to another device. Test with a controller explicitly identified as compatible by Xbox. Do not assume that every inexpensive Bluetooth controller provides complete button mapping or full support.

The stream is blurry, delayed, or disconnects
- Check the Fire TV’s network connection.
- Move the Fire TV or wireless access point to reduce interference and improve signal strength.

Cloud gaming performance depends on more than download speed. A game is missing or cannot be played from the cloud
Check all four variables: whether the title supports cloud play, whether it is included with your specific plan or otherwise eligible for your account, whether it is available in your region, and whether the listing has changed. Xbox’s catalog is dynamic; a game’s availability can change by time, title, plan, platform, and location.
Important limitations
- This is streaming, not emulation. Fire TV does not run Xbox console games locally.
- A compatible controller is a separate requirement. Having the Xbox app does not make the Fire TV remote suitable for most games.
- Game Pass access is not universal. Most games require an eligible plan, and plan rules change.
