The release contains both complete games:
- Super Mario Galaxy: Mario travels through the cosmos, works with Rosalina and the Lumas, and searches for Power Stars stolen by Bowser while attempting to rescue Princess Peach.
- Super Mario Galaxy 2: Mario sets out aboard Starship Mario, visits a broad collection of worlds, and teams up with Yoshi for another planet-hopping adventure.
On Nintendo Switch, the two games are available together on a physical game card. Nintendo also sells Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 individually through the Nintendo eShop, as well as offering a combined digital bundle.

If you prefer a boxed game, want to lend or resell physical software where permitted, or simply want both adventures in one product, the physical Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 bundle is the straightforward choice. Choose the individual digital edition if you only want one of the games. The digital bundle makes more sense if you want both but do not need a cartridge or case.
The physical product is identified as a Nintendo Switch release with an October 2, 2025 release date. It should not be described as a separate Switch 2 edition: Nintendo presents it as Nintendo Switch software that is playable on Switch 2 after the applicable free update.

Both games receive more than a simple port. The Nintendo Switch versions include the following enhancements:
- Enhanced resolution: The games target 1080p on Nintendo Switch.
- Improved menus and interface elements: On-screen text and other interface features have been adjusted for the newer hardware and display environment.
- Additional Storybook chapters: The Storybook material associated with the games has been expanded.
- Assist Mode: A new option makes the games more forgiving by providing additional health and helping Mario recover from falls.
- Soundtrack functionality: The release includes functionality for listening to the games’ music.
- Compatible amiibo support: Supported figures can provide in-game benefits, but amiibo are optional and are not required to complete either game.
Assist Mode is particularly useful for younger players, newcomers to 3D platformers, and anyone who wants to focus on exploration rather than repeating difficult sections. It does not turn the games into entirely different experiences; it reduces some of the punishment for mistakes and falls.

What does the free Switch 2 update add?
The Switch versions run on Nintendo Switch 2, and a free update adds improvements for the newer console. On a supported 4K display, the games can output improved visuals at up to 4K resolution. Nintendo states that the frame rate is capped at 60 frames per second for 4K output, and 4K is not available on every television or monitor.
The update also enables a second player to use Joy-Con 2 mouse controls for activities such as collecting Star Bits and attacking enemies. This is an additional cooperative control option rather than a requirement for playing through the games. The precise experience can depend on the console setup and the compatible accessories being used.

Nintendo lists version 1.3.1 as the latest Super Mario Galaxy update in its support information, released February 5, 2026. That update changed software information and did not add new in-game content.
How to update the game on Switch 2
- Connect the Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
- Highlight the game’s icon on the HOME Menu.
- Press the + or − button to open the software options.
- Choose Software Update, then select Via the Internet.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before starting the game.
The required update applies whether you own the physical release or a digital version. Keep in mind that the 4K feature requires a compatible display, and accessory behavior may differ between the standard Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and Switch 2. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play for the individual titles, but Switch Lite has no detachable Joy-Con controllers and can therefore change how some control features are used.
Do the Galaxy amiibo add anything important?

If you are collecting the figures or want the associated bonuses, the Mario and Luma amiibo and Rosalina and Lumas amiibo are the two Galaxy-specific options. Games, consoles, and amiibo are sold separately, and prices and availability may vary.
Rosalina’s Storybook is a companion, not a game
Nintendo and Dark Horse Books also released Rosalina’s Storybook, a hardcover book using the art and story of Super Mario Galaxy. Its official release date was November 25, 2025.
The book is a good companion for readers interested in Rosalina, the Lumas, and the narrative material behind the first game. It is also a more suitable gift or display item than a gameplay accessory. It does not replace either game, and purchasing it does not provide access to the Switch software.
For a lore-focused gift or collection, consider the Rosalina’s Storybook hardcover alongside the games. As with the software and amiibo, check the current retailer listing for price and availability.

Which game should you play first?
Start with Super Mario Galaxy if you want the original cosmic adventure, Rosalina’s central role, and the story that establishes the setting and characters. Follow it with Super Mario Galaxy 2, which builds on the same broad idea while sending Mario through a new sequence of worlds aboard Starship Mario and adding Yoshi-focused gameplay.
There is no need to own both versions of the hardware. The games are playable on Nintendo Switch, while Switch 2 owners receive the higher-resolution and Joy-Con 2 control additions through the free update. Players using Switch Lite should pay particular attention to the accessory and control requirements for their preferred play setup.

Buy the physical bundle if you want both classic 3D Mario games together in a box. Buy one digital edition if you only want Galaxy or Galaxy 2. Choose the digital bundle if you want both without physical media. Switch 2 owners should update the software to access the console’s enhanced visuals and optional second-player mouse controls.
The amiibo and Rosalina’s Storybook are worthwhile extras for collectors and lore-focused fans, but neither is necessary to play the games. Most readers only need to decide between the physical bundle and the digital options; the Switch 2 update and optional accessories can be added according to hardware and personal preference.
