Remote Play is different from Xbox Cloud Gaming: Remote Play uses your console, and generally does not require Game Pass just to stream a game you can play on that console. Cloud Gaming runs supported games on Microsoft’s servers and usually requires a qualifying Game Pass plan. Xbox Remote Play | Xbox Cloud Gaming
What you need for Xbox Remote Play
- An Xbox One, Xbox Series S, or Xbox Series X connected to the internet.
- A Microsoft account with an Xbox profile, used on both the console and remote device.
- Remote features enabled, with the console in a power state that allows remote access.
- A supported phone, tablet, Windows PC, browser, or select TV, Fire TV, or Meta Quest device.
- A compatible controller, usually connected to the receiving device over Bluetooth or USB.
- A reliable connection. Microsoft’s Remote Play page lists 5 GHz Wi-Fi or mobile data and a minimum download speed of 10 Mbps. That is a published minimum, not a promise of smooth play; latency, upload quality, interference, and network congestion also matter. See Microsoft’s current Remote Play requirements.
Microsoft lists Android 6.0 or later on its Remote Play page, while its mobile-app page lists Android 8.0 or later. For an older Android device, treat Android 8.0 as the safer practical threshold and check the current support information. Both pages list iOS 15.1 or later; the Remote Play page lists Windows 10/11 version 22H2 or later. Device, operating-system, browser, and regional availability can change. Xbox mobile-app information
Turn on Remote Play on your Xbox
- Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose Devices & connections > Remote features.
- Turn on Enable remote features.
- If the console offers a Test remote play or readiness check, run it and follow any prompts.
- In the console’s power settings, choose a standby option that permits remote access or wake. Menu labels can vary by dashboard update.
The console must remain connected to power and the network. A fully shut-down, unplugged, offline, updating, or otherwise unavailable console cannot start a Remote Play session. Do not assume that every shutdown setting permits remote wake.

Play from a phone or tablet
- Open a supported browser such as Safari, Chrome, or Edge on your phone or tablet.
- Go to xbox.com/remoteplay.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the Xbox profile and choose your console.
- Connect a compatible controller to the phone or tablet, then select an available game.
On iPhone or iPad, adding the Xbox website to the home screen can make it easier to reopen. It is a shortcut to the web experience, not a native console-streaming app, and it does not remove the need for an available Xbox. Microsoft also describes a route from Xbox.com/play through its menu to Remote Play; the dedicated Remote Play address is the direct option.
Play from a Windows PC
The straightforward option is to open xbox.com/remoteplay in a supported browser, sign in, select the console, and connect a controller. Microsoft also says its Xbox PC app can play games installed on a console remotely; app features and labels may change. Xbox app for PC

Play away from home
Remote Play can connect from another location if your Xbox remains online and remotely available, your account can reach it, and the remote connection has adequate bandwidth and latency. The home Xbox’s network matters too: its upload quality affects the stream sent out to you. Ethernet from the console to the router is preferable where practical; 5 GHz Wi-Fi is often less congested than 2.4 GHz nearby, though its signal may not travel as far through walls.
Recommended Free Tools
Hotel, school, office, and public networks can block or interrupt connections, and mobile data performance varies by signal and carrier. Data charges may apply. Test the setup on another network before relying on it while traveling; “remote” does not mean guaranteed access from every location.
Remote Play or Cloud Gaming?
Choose based on where you want the game to run. Remote Play streams your console; Cloud Gaming streams from Microsoft’s servers. Their libraries and subscription requirements are different.

| Best fit | Using your own console library when you are away from the console’s screen. | Playing supported games without relying on a home Xbox. |
Microsoft’s cloud plans, catalog, regions, quality, and wait times vary. Do not assume every Game Pass plan has identical cloud access; check the current plan details before subscribing. Cloud Gaming details
Do you need Game Pass?
Not necessarily for Remote Play. It streams from your own Xbox and does not automatically require a Game Pass subscription. You still need a valid license or access to the game: for example, a subscription game may stop being playable if the subscription expires or the title leaves the library. Some games and online multiplayer features may require Game Pass or another applicable subscription. Microsoft’s Remote Play page

Choose a controller that fits your setup
A physical controller is the dependable choice for ordinary Remote Play. Touch controls are promoted for selected cloud-playable games, but should not be assumed for Remote Play.
- Full-size Xbox controller: A familiar layout and useful across supported devices. Confirm the controller revision supports Bluetooth if you plan to pair it wirelessly; USB is an alternative. Xbox Wireless Controller
- Phone-mounted controller: A Backbone One or Razer Kishi-style design makes a phone feel more handheld. Check the exact connector, device dimensions, platform compatibility, case clearance, and charging arrangement before buying. Models and prices vary. Backbone | Razer mobile controllers
- Wired controller: A useful troubleshooting alternative when Bluetooth pairing or perceived input delay is a problem, provided the device supports the connection.
Compatibility can differ between iPhone, Android, Windows, TVs, and VR headsets. A controller that works with one receiving device is not automatically supported by every other device.

- If the Xbox is missing: Confirm you are signed into the correct Microsoft account, Remote features are enabled, the console is online, and its power mode allows remote access. Use xbox.com/remoteplay and update the console and receiving device.
- Test on the home network: Connect the phone or PC to the same reliable network as the Xbox. If that works but another location does not, the remote network may be blocking or weakening the connection.
- Improve the network path: Prefer Ethernet for the Xbox and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the receiving device when signal strength allows. Move closer to the router and reduce competing traffic, particularly heavy uploads on the home connection.
- If it disconnects: Restart the Xbox and router, rerun the console’s Remote Play readiness check, temporarily disable a VPN, and try another supported browser or network. Captive portals and restrictive hotel, workplace, or carrier networks can interfere.
- If the image is blurry or controls feel delayed: Check signal stability and latency, not just download speed. Reduce congestion, avoid weak cellular coverage, and try a wired controller. Microsoft does not promise a fixed Remote Play resolution or frame rate.
- If the controller is not detected: Charge it, pair it directly with the receiving device, remove and recreate its Bluetooth pairing, or try USB. If it keeps reconnecting to the Xbox, disconnect it from the console first. Check device compatibility and controller firmware where supported.
- If sound works but inputs do not: Make sure the controller is connected to the receiving device rather than the Xbox, the browser window has focus, and the game does not need a specialized unsupported input device.
- If a game is absent or will not start: Check that it is installed or otherwise available on the console, your profile has access, the title is compatible, and it is not updating. Family-safety settings, online requirements, licensing, or specialized peripherals can also affect access.
Games and the console session
Remote Play is for games available on your Xbox, not a way to download a complete console version to your phone. Compatibility can vary by title, licensing, platform, online requirements, and required peripherals. Backward-compatible games may work when supported by the console, but that does not guarantee every Xbox 360 or original Xbox title will work remotely. For disc-based games, check the specific title’s access requirements rather than assuming every case works the same way.

Remote Play is a session on one console, not a second independent copy of a game. The console’s local display may reflect the remote session, and simultaneous independent play should not be assumed; behavior depends on the game, account, and multiplayer setup.
Keep your account safe on shared devices
Use your own Microsoft account, avoid saving passwords in public browsers, and sign out on borrowed or shared devices. Account access can expose Xbox purchases, social features, and cloud saves. Do not manually expose console services or set up port forwarding unless current official Xbox support instructions specifically call for it.
