Microsoft Edge PC Gaming Boost: What Efficiency Mode Does and How to Use It

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft Edge’s gaming-specific “Efficiency mode” is now called PC gaming boost. It can reduce Edge’s CPU and memory activity while a PC game is running, leaving more resources available for the game—but it does not overclock your hardware or guarantee higher FPS. The general browser feature formerly called Efficiency mode is now Energy saver, a separate setting.

What changed: three different features called “efficiency”

Older Edge instructions may use names that no longer appear in current settings. Microsoft announced that the gaming-specific setting is being renamed PC gaming boost, while Edge’s general power-saving feature is now Energy saver. Windows also has a separate Efficiency mode in Task Manager; its green leaf indicator does not show whether Edge’s gaming feature is enabled. Microsoft explains the distinction in its performance-features guide and the name-change announcement.

Feature What it does
PC gaming boost Edge’s gaming-specific feature, formerly “Efficiency mode for PC gaming”; reduces the browser’s impact when a PC game is running.
Energy saver Edge’s general power and resource-saving feature, formerly “Efficiency mode.”
Windows Efficiency mode A Windows 11 Task Manager process-control feature. It is separate from Edge’s settings.

What PC gaming boost actually does

Microsoft says PC gaming boost is enabled by default and automatically reduces Edge CPU and memory use when a game starts. It changes activity in certain tabs you are not using and can put eligible tabs to sleep. It does not make every tab sleep: active media, web apps, extensions, shared browsing contexts, and sites on exception lists can behave differently. See Microsoft’s PC gaming performance description.

The practical aim is to reduce browser-related competition for system resources. That may help when Edge is using substantial CPU or RAM—for example, with many tabs or extensions open, on a limited-memory PC, or when memory pressure is causing paging. If the game is limited by its GPU, the setting may make little or no measurable difference. It does not change graphics settings, increase GPU power, or optimize a game’s engine.

How to find and enable the setting

  1. Open Microsoft Edge and go to Settings and more (…) > Settings.
  2. Choose System and performance, then open or scroll to Performance.
  3. Look for PC gaming boost or a similarly worded gaming-performance option and turn it on if it is off. You can also enter edge://settings/system in the address bar and find the Performance section.
  4. If you cannot find it, check edge://settings/help for an update, install an available update, and restart Edge. The label and availability can vary by release, channel, operating system, policy, and staged interface rollout.

Older versions may show “Improve your PC gaming experience with efficiency mode” or “Efficiency mode for PC gaming.” Microsoft’s current performance controls are described under Settings > System and performance > Performance in its Edge performance guide.

Configure sleeping tabs without interrupting essential sites

Sleeping tabs pause inactive pages to reduce CPU activity and release some memory. They generally resume more quickly than discarded tabs, because a discarded tab’s page content has been removed from memory and must reload. If a web app needs to stay active, use an exception rather than disabling the feature everywhere.

  1. Open edge://settings/system/managePerformance, or go to Settings > System and performance > Performance.
  2. Turn on Save resources with sleeping tabs (or the equivalent label in your Edge version).
  3. Choose an inactivity timeout that suits your use.
  4. Add sites that must remain active to the exception list, usually labeled Always keep these sites active.

Consider exceptions for live dashboards, chat, audio or video web apps, cloud gaming, browser games, remote-desktop pages, and long-running uploads or other web tasks. A page that is paused may stop doing work in the background even if its tab remains open. Microsoft documents sleeping-tab settings and exceptions in its high CPU and memory troubleshooting guide.

Use RAM resource controls cautiously

Edge’s Resource controls let you set a RAM-use limit and choose whether it applies only while PC gaming or all the time. Microsoft introduced the feature in Edge 125; availability and labels can vary in later releases. Find it under Settings and more (…) > Settings > System and performance > Manage your performance, enable Resource controls, and start with the gaming-only option. Microsoft explains the controls in its Resource controls announcement.

  • Set a conservative limit rather than immediately choosing the lowest one.
  • Watch Edge’s resource use and your browsing behavior after the limit takes effect.
  • If tabs reload often or Edge becomes sluggish, raise the limit or turn the control off.
  • Keep essential live sites active with sleeping-tab exceptions where possible.

When Edge reaches its limit, it may sleep or discard more tabs, increasing reloads; an overly low limit can slow the browser. Microsoft also notes that observed memory use may sometimes appear above the configured limit, so treat it as a management control rather than an exact, instantaneous ceiling.

Use Energy saver carefully

Energy saver is separate from PC gaming boost. It is intended to reduce Edge’s power and resource use, but Microsoft warns that it can make some activity less smooth, including video playback. For a browser game or another performance-sensitive web app, exclude the site from Energy saver rather than assuming the most aggressive power-saving option is best. On a plugged-in desktop it may still reduce browser load, but its effect on the page can be a trade-off. See Microsoft’s guidance on Edge performance features.

Check whether it helped on your PC

Edge may not show a dramatic confirmation every time a game launches. Compare the same game and workload with the setting on and off, changing as little else as possible. Look beyond average FPS: frame-time consistency or 1% lows, stutter during multitasking, memory pressure, paging, launch and alt-tab responsiveness, media playback, and Edge responsiveness after the game closes can all reveal a change. A single FPS reading does not establish that Edge caused it.

  1. Record a baseline with your usual tabs and background apps open.
  2. Open Edge Browser Task Manager with Shift + Esc. Sort by CPU or Memory to identify busy tabs, extensions, and utility processes.
  3. Launch the game and observe whether Edge’s load changes. You can also check overall CPU and memory pressure in Windows Task Manager.
  4. Repeat with PC gaming boost enabled under comparable conditions. If results vary between runs, do not attribute the difference to the setting alone.

Microsoft documents the Shift + Esc shortcut and process-sorting approach in its Edge CPU and memory troubleshooting guide.

Troubleshoot stutter, reloads, or high Edge usage

If a game stutters

  1. Temporarily turn off PC gaming boost and compare again.
  2. If Resource controls are on, raise the limit or disable them for the test.
  3. Check whether Edge is playing video or running a web app, then inspect its processes with Shift + Esc.
  4. Disable extensions one at a time at edge://extensions/ to identify a possible source of load.
  5. Check graphics acceleration in edge://settings/system and inspect edge://gpu. Microsoft recommends checking acceleration and the GPU page when troubleshooting performance.
  6. Update the graphics driver and compare the game with Edge fully closed. If the game is still limited, investigate CPU, GPU, RAM, VRAM, temperatures, and other background applications rather than expecting browser settings to fix the bottleneck.

If tabs reload too often

  • Raise the Resource controls limit or turn off an always-on limit.
  • Choose a longer sleeping-tab timeout and add essential pages to the exception list.
  • Close duplicate or media-heavy tabs and reduce unnecessary extensions.

If Edge stays busy after its windows close

Open edge://settings/system and turn off Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed if you do not need those background tasks. Managed devices may have policies that control performance settings; see Microsoft’s Edge policy reference.

If Task Manager shows a green leaf

That indicator concerns Windows Efficiency mode for a process, not whether Edge PC gaming boost is enabled. Do not disable Windows Efficiency mode for every process automatically. If a game or launcher is marked and appears to be performing poorly, inspect that process in Windows Task Manager and test its behavior before changing its status. Microsoft notes that Windows Efficiency mode can cause instability for certain processes in its performance-features guidance.

Game Assist is an overlay, not a performance boost

Microsoft Edge Game Assist puts browser content within Xbox Game Bar, which can be useful for checking a guide, chat, video, music, or a search without switching to a full desktop browser. It is separate from PC gaming boost, and running it still has some resource impact. Microsoft says Game Assist is included with Edge 137 or later on supported Windows 11 editions when the current Game Bar and Windows updates are installed. It is optimized for keyboard and mouse; it is not a full desktop browser window, and desktop tabs do not automatically appear in it, though browser data such as history and cookies may be shared. Check Microsoft’s Game Assist FAQ for current requirements and behavior.
