Use a CNAME when the website provider gives you a hostname, or an A/AAAA record when it gives you an IPv4 or IPv6 address. Then add the subdomain as a custom hostname in the destination service and complete its HTTPS certificate validation. DNS mapping is not the same as redirecting visitors to another URL or path; redirects require an HTTP redirect service, server rule, CDN rule, or application route.

What “pointing a subdomain” actually does
A subdomain is a name below your parent domain. In blog.example.com, blog is the subdomain label and example.com is the parent domain. DNS determines where that name should be resolved, while the web server decides what content to return after a browser connects.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →When an external website host asks you to point blog.example.com to a target, it is normally asking for DNS mapping. A CNAME tells DNS that your name has the same destination hostname as another name. An A or AAAA record supplies an address directly. None of these records changes a URL path, performs a 301 or 302 redirect, or automatically configures the destination application to recognize your hostname.
The complete setup therefore has two independent parts:

If the desired result is “visitors who open go.example.com should be sent to https://other.example/path,” you need a redirect feature in addition to DNS. A DNS record alone cannot rewrite a path or issue an HTTP response.
Choose the right record type
Use the record type that matches what the external provider actually supplies. Do not substitute an IP address for a hostname target unless the provider explicitly publishes stable addresses for that purpose.
| Record | Use it when | Value entered | Important limits or behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| CNAME | The provider gives you another hostname, such as sites.host.example. |
The fully qualified domain name (FQDN), without https://, a path, or query string. |
It aliases the subdomain to a hostname whose address can change. A CNAME name generally cannot also contain unrelated A, AAAA, MX, or other record data. |
| A | The provider gives you an IPv4 address. | An IPv4 address such as the exact address supplied by the provider. | If the provider changes its address, you must update the record. It is not a substitute for a hostname-based target. |
| AAAA | The provider gives you an IPv6 address. | An IPv6 address supplied by the provider. | Use it only when the destination is prepared to serve IPv6 traffic. Keep it consistent with any A record the provider requires. |
| Route 53 alias | A managed AWS target, such as an Amazon CloudFront distribution, is the destination. | Select the eligible AWS resource in the alias target control rather than typing a conventional CNAME value. | It is provider-specific DNS behavior. For a CloudFront subdomain, AWS documents an alias record in the parent hosted zone. |
For an ordinary subdomain, a CNAME is usually the correct choice when the external host gives you a name. A and AAAA are appropriate when the host gives you addresses and expects you to maintain them. Provider-specific alias records are useful when the DNS provider can point directly at a managed service that cannot be represented by a normal CNAME in that workflow.
Before you change DNS
Get the destination’s exact instructions
Start with the external website provider. Ask for the exact target hostname or IP address, the required record type, the custom-domain entry, and any verification value. Some providers require a second TXT record for ownership validation; do not invent one, and do not remove it until validation is complete.
Copy the target exactly. Preserve any trailing-dot convention or verification detail the provider specifies. A hostname target is not a web address: https://sites.host.example/store is invalid as a CNAME value, while sites.host.example is a hostname.

Find the authoritative DNS service
The company where you bought the domain may not host its DNS. The authoritative service is identified by the domain’s nameservers. If the nameservers point to a separate DNS platform, add the record there, not automatically in the registrar’s dashboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can inspect the delegation from a terminal with:
dig NS example.com +short
On systems without dig, use an equivalent nameserver lookup such as:
nslookup -type=NS example.com
Compare the returned nameservers with the service where you intend to edit the zone. If they do not match, the edit may be saved successfully but never published to the internet.
Check for an existing record
Look in the parent domain’s DNS zone for the exact owner name you plan to use. A pre-existing A, AAAA, or CNAME record at blog.example.com can conflict with the new record. Record rules vary by DNS provider, but a CNAME generally cannot coexist with unrelated records at the same name. Decide whether the existing record is still needed before deleting it; changing a live name can interrupt an existing site or mail-related service.

Step-by-step: connect a subdomain to an external host
- Choose the label. Decide whether the public name will be
blog.example.com,play.example.com, or another label. In most DNS dashboards, enter onlyblogin the Name or Host field. Some interfaces display or appendexample.comautomatically. - Open the authoritative zone. Sign in to the DNS service identified by the domain’s nameservers and open the DNS zone for
example.com. - Create the matching record. Select CNAME for a hostname target, A for an IPv4 target, or AAAA for an IPv6 target. Enter the exact value supplied by the external host.
- Keep the value as a DNS value. For CNAME, enter only the FQDN, such as
sites.host.example. Do not includehttp://,https://, a slash, a port, or a path such as/pricing. - Set TTL according to your provider’s guidance. TTL controls how long recursive resolvers may cache the answer. A lower value can make planned changes easier to roll back, while a higher value reduces repeated lookups. The official setup material does not support promising a universal propagation time.
- Remove a conflicting record if necessary. If the DNS service reports that a CNAME conflicts with existing data at the same name, remove or consolidate the obsolete record after confirming what currently depends on it.
- Save the zone change. Check the final owner name and value before confirming. A common mistake is entering
blog.example.com.example.comin a dashboard that automatically appends the parent domain. - Add the custom hostname at the destination. In the external website’s dashboard, add
blog.example.comas a custom domain. Complete any TXT or other ownership check that service requests. - Enable HTTPS at the destination. The external host must issue and attach a certificate for
blog.example.com. A DNS record does not create that certificate by itself. - Verify both layers. First confirm DNS resolution. Then request the site over HTTP and HTTPS and check that the application serves the requested custom host rather than only its provider hostname.
Provider-specific workflows
Cloudflare DNS
In Cloudflare’s DNS interface, create an A, AAAA, or CNAME record, enter the subdomain label, set the target, and choose the proxy status and TTL. Cloudflare’s guidance says that when you are pointing to a fully qualified domain name, you should select CNAME.
Cloudflare proxying changes the traffic path: visitors connect to Cloudflare, which then connects to the origin. If Cloudflare is authoritative and you expect its SSL/TLS certificate service to cover the hostname, its documentation states that the DNS record must be Proxied. If you leave it DNS-only, the origin still needs to serve a valid certificate directly. Use the mode that matches the destination provider’s instructions; proxying an unprepared origin can produce certificate, redirect, or application-host errors.
Cloudflare also documents redirects separately. Creating a CNAME in Cloudflare will not send /pricing to another URL; configure a redirect rule or another HTTP-capable feature for that outcome.
Amazon Route 53
The common Route 53 workflow is to open the parent domain’s hosted zone and create the subdomain record there. Use a CNAME for a hostname supplied by an external service, or an A or AAAA record for an address.

For an Amazon CloudFront distribution, Route 53 can use an alias record targeting that distribution. Follow the alias workflow rather than forcing the distribution name into a conventional CNAME when AWS presents the managed target option.
GoDaddy DNS
GoDaddy’s documented dashboard path is Domain Portfolio → domain → DNS → Add New Record. Its guidance distinguishes the same basic choices: use A for an IP address and CNAME when the subdomain connects to another domain name. Enter the label and target in the fields provided, then complete custom-domain and certificate setup in the external host’s dashboard.
DNS mapping versus redirecting a URL
| Requirement | What to configure | What the visitor experiences |
|---|---|---|
| Serve the external site at your subdomain while keeping that hostname visible | A CNAME, A, AAAA, or applicable alias record, plus custom-host and HTTPS configuration at the destination. | The browser remains on blog.example.com while the destination application serves the page. |
| Send visitors to a different hostname or path | DNS pointing to a redirect-capable service, web server rule, CDN rule, or application route. | The service returns an HTTP 301, 302, or another redirect response and the browser navigates to the target URL. |
Preserve a path such as /pricing during forwarding |
An HTTP-aware redirect or application rule. | The service can construct the destination URL with the requested path according to its rule. |
For a redirect, keep the subdomain’s DNS record aimed at the service that will issue the redirect. Do not place a full URL in a CNAME field and expect DNS to perform forwarding; DNS has no knowledge of URL paths, status codes, or browser navigation.
Set up and verify HTTPS
HTTP may appear to work immediately while HTTPS fails because DNS resolution and certificate issuance are separate events. The destination must know that blog.example.com is an approved host and must obtain a certificate whose names include that hostname.
- Add the custom hostname in the destination service before testing the certificate.
- Complete any DNS, TXT, or HTTP validation requested by that service.
- Use the exact hostname in the browser; a certificate for the provider’s default hostname does not automatically cover your subdomain.
- If a proxy is enabled at the authoritative DNS provider, review its documented SSL/TLS mode and origin requirements.
- Test both
http://blog.example.comandhttps://blog.example.com. A working HTTP response does not prove that HTTPS is configured.
Do not treat a browser certificate warning as a propagation issue alone. First confirm that the destination has issued the custom-domain certificate and that the request is reaching the intended proxy or origin.

Test the record from more than one angle
Inspect DNS directly
Query the record type you created:
dig CNAME blog.example.com +short
dig A blog.example.com +short
dig AAAA blog.example.com +short
Only the query matching your configuration is expected to return the relevant answer. A CNAME lookup may show the target hostname; a subsequent A or AAAA lookup resolves that target to addresses.
To ask a particular public resolver, replace the resolver address as needed:
Recommended Free Tools
dig @1.1.1.1 blog.example.com
dig @8.8.8.8 blog.example.com
Different resolvers can temporarily show different answers while cached TTLs expire. The authoritative zone is the source of the new record; recursive resolvers may continue serving an older answer until their cache permits refresh.
Test the web request and Host name
After DNS resolves, request the actual site:
curl -I http://blog.example.com
curl -I https://blog.example.com
Look for the expected status code, redirect location, and certificate result. A response from the provider’s generic hostname, a default landing page, or an “unknown host” message usually means the destination has not been configured for your custom hostname, even if DNS is correct.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The record appears in the registrar but public lookups show nothing. | The domain’s nameservers point to another DNS provider. | Identify the authoritative nameservers and edit that provider’s parent-domain zone. |
| The dashboard rejects the CNAME. | An A, AAAA, or another conflicting record already exists at the same owner name. | Remove or consolidate the obsolete record after checking its dependencies. |
| The target is rejected as invalid. | The value includes https://, a path, port, or query string. |
Enter only the destination hostname, such as sites.host.example. |
| The site resolves but displays the host’s default page. | The external application does not recognize your custom hostname. | Add blog.example.com in the destination dashboard and complete its verification. |
| HTTP works but HTTPS shows a certificate error. | No certificate exists for the custom hostname, validation is incomplete, or a proxy/origin TLS mode is wrong. | Complete certificate validation at the destination and review proxy status and SSL/TLS settings where applicable. |
| A hostname target was entered as an A record. | An A record expects an IPv4 address, not a DNS name. | Replace it with a CNAME unless the provider explicitly supplied stable IPv4 addresses. |
| CloudFront does not accept the ordinary CNAME workflow. | The managed distribution is intended to be selected as a Route 53 alias target. | Use the Route 53 alias workflow or the equivalent documented option at your DNS provider. |
| The old answer remains visible after saving. | Recursive resolver caches still honor the previous TTL. | Check the authoritative answer, then allow caches to refresh. There is no single guaranteed propagation duration. |
| A redirect does not preserve the requested path. | Only DNS mapping was configured, or the redirect rule does not include path handling. | Use an HTTP redirect service, server, CDN, or application rule designed to construct the required destination URL. |
When to delegate a child zone instead
Most subdomains need only one record in the parent zone. Delegation is useful when another team should manage all DNS beneath a subdomain, not just one hostname. For example, you might create a hosted zone for games.example.com in a separate account and publish that zone’s nameservers as an NS record in the example.com parent zone.
Once delegated, records such as store.games.example.com are managed in the child zone. Editing an unrelated CNAME in the parent zone does not replace delegation, and adding a record in the wrong zone will not make the child authoritative.

Operational checks before you finish
- Confirm the label is spelled exactly as intended and that the DNS dashboard did not append the parent domain twice.
- Record the destination provider’s required target and verification values so a future administrator can reproduce the setup.
- Check whether the destination expects a trailing dot, a TXT ownership record, or a specific proxy mode.
- Review existing records at the same name before replacing them.
- Test from the authoritative answer, at least one recursive resolver, and a real browser.
- Test the canonical HTTPS URL and decide whether HTTP should redirect to HTTPS at the destination.
- If the name is used for a redirect, test several paths and query strings rather than only the home page.
- After a migration, leave the old record in place only for the period your rollback plan requires; remove obsolete records once dependent services have moved.
Key takeaways
Use a CNAME for a hostname target, A for IPv4, and AAAA for IPv6. Make the change in the DNS service authoritative for the parent domain, which may not be the registrar. Enter a bare hostname—not a URL—in the CNAME target field. Configure the destination to accept the custom hostname and issue HTTPS separately. If the goal is to send people to another URL or path, point DNS at a service that can return an HTTP redirect; DNS itself cannot perform that rewrite.
