The Grappling Hook is a Mistlands movement tool that pulls you toward an attached point so you can gain height, cross awkward gaps, or recover from a bad drop. It is not a conventional weapon and does not behave like a free-swinging rope. To get one, find a Hook in an Infested Mine, use that pickup to unlock the recipe, then craft the item at a Black Forge.

This guide covers the exact discovery route, the currently documented recipe, controls, realistic uses, approximate range, and the mechanics that remain undocumented. Ingredient quantities come from current item references; Iron Gate’s published material confirms the tool and its purpose but does not provide a complete recipe.

What the Grappling Hook does

Iron Gate’s Valheim 1.0 wording describes the item simply: “Traverse across heights easier with a grappling hook!” That is the right mental model. You throw the hook at a surface, wait for the attachment, then reel your character toward that point. The result is direct pulling and hanging rather than a large pendulum swing.

Because it is a traversal tool, its value is greatest where normal movement becomes slow or awkward: steep Mistlands terrain, deep shafts, separated ledges, and drops that leave you below the route you intended to take. It can shorten a climb or provide a recovery option when a jump leaves you on an inconvenient shelf. It does not turn every cliff into a guaranteed route, however; the hook still needs a surface it can attach to, and a missed throw can leave you exposed.

How to get your first Hook

Travel to the Mistlands

The discovery step begins in the Mistlands. You are looking for an Infested Mine, the dungeon type that contains Dvergr treasure chests. Bring the equipment you normally use for a dangerous dungeon expedition: enough food and healing for repeated encounters, weapons you can rely on in confined rooms, and inventory space for an item that will unlock a new crafting recipe as soon as you pick it up.

The Hook is found as loot in a Dvergr treasure chest. You do not craft the first one from materials; you must obtain this initial Hook before the recipe becomes available.

Search Infested Mines systematically

Infested Mines can contain rooms that are easy to overlook. In particular, watch for stone doors marked with blue glyphs. These doors are a useful visual clue when you are checking side rooms and branches rather than following only the most obvious corridor. Open every Dvergr treasure chest you encounter and continue searching other mines if the first chest does not contain a Hook.

The exact number of chests you may need to open is not fixed by the available documentation, so plan for a search rather than a guaranteed first-chest result. Once a Hook appears in your inventory, the recipe is unlocked automatically; you do not need to find a separate schematic or defeat a named enemy to learn it.

What to do if a mine seems empty

  • Recheck rooms behind blue-glyph stone doors and side passages.
  • Confirm that you opened every Dvergr treasure chest, not only containers in the entrance area.
  • Leave with the Hook if you find one; picking it up is what unlocks the recipe.
  • If no Hook is present, search another Infested Mine rather than assuming the item is unavailable in your world.

Current Grappling Hook recipe

Current community item references list the following Black Forge recipe:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Material Quantity How it fits into the process
Yggdrasil Wood 10 Gathered as a Mistlands-era wood resource and used as the structural material.
Refined Eitr 10 A Mistlands magical material produced through the area’s crafting progression.
Mandibles 4 A creature resource from the Mistlands.
Hook 1 The Hook found in a Dvergr treasure chest; it also unlocks the recipe.

The quantities above are the values currently listed by item databases and community references. Iron Gate’s cited official information confirms that the Grappling Hook exists, classifies it as a tool, and explains its height-traversal purpose, but that material does not publish the complete ingredient list. If a later game update changes the recipe, the in-game Black Forge interface is the final authority for your installed version.

Craft it at a Black Forge

  1. Obtain the Hook first. Pick up the item from a Dvergr treasure chest in an Infested Mine. The pickup unlocks the recipe.
  2. Collect the listed materials. You need 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, and 4 Mandibles in addition to the Hook.
  3. Reach a Black Forge. The recipe is tied to this Mistlands crafting station, not a basic workbench or an earlier forge tier.
  4. Open the crafting menu and select Grappling Hook. Verify that the station recognizes all four ingredients, including the Hook in your inventory.
  5. Craft the item. Move the finished Grappling Hook to a hotbar slot so you can select it without opening your inventory during a climb.

If the recipe does not appear, the most likely cause is that the Hook has not actually been picked up by the character using the Black Forge. Check the dungeon chest and your inventory history, then return to the station after obtaining one.

Controls: throw, reel, and release

The hook has a short loading delay before it is ready to fire. Select it from your hotbar, begin the throw, and allow that delay to finish instead of assuming the projectile is available instantly.

  1. Equip: Select the Grappling Hook in your hotbar.
  2. Aim: Point at a surface you want to use as the attachment point.
  3. Fire: Use the item’s attack input to launch the hook after the loading delay.
  4. Reel in: Press Space to pull your character toward the attached point.
  5. Release: Press the right mouse button to detach the hook.

Think of Space as the movement command once the hook is attached. Right-click is the deliberate escape from the line; use it when you have reached a ledge, want to change your angle, or no longer need to hang from the point.

How attachment and movement feel in play

It pulls you; it does not provide a grappling swing

The documented behavior is a pull-and-hang interaction. You should not plan a sequence around building momentum in a wide arc, launching yourself over a gap like a superhero, or using the line as a physics swing. The practical motion is closer to climbing directly toward a fixed point. If you need to land on a distant ledge, choose an attachment point that places you near that ledge and be prepared to release once your position is useful.

Expect a short pause before the throw

The loading delay matters most in combat, while falling, or when you are trying to catch a narrow ledge. Start the throw before you reach the exact spot where you expect to need it. If you wait until the last moment, the delay can turn a recoverable mistake into a fall.

Attachment is not guaranteed on every surface

The tool requires a valid attachment surface. A visual target that looks close may not accept the hook, and an angle that works from one side of a rock formation may fail from another. Use broad, clearly exposed sections of terrain when possible, then adjust your position before firing again if the first attempt misses.

How far does it reach?

A community reference gives an approximate reach of about 40 metres. That figure is an estimate, not an official specification, and it should not be treated as a guaranteed radius for every angle, surface, or game version. Use it as a planning aid: if the ledge you want is well beyond roughly that distance, move closer or create an intermediate step rather than relying on a maximum-range throw.

Because the available documentation does not establish a tested range table, durability value, stamina cost, cooldown, or universal fall-damage behavior, those details should remain unresolved rather than being inferred from individual player reports. Watch your own character’s position and health, and keep a conventional route available when the landing matters.

Practical ways to use the Hook

Reach an elevated ledge

Look for a stable face or upper lip above you, aim at the exposed section, and fire from as close as practical. Once attached, hold Space to climb toward the point. Release with right-click when your feet are on a usable surface rather than remaining suspended beside the ledge.

Cross a broken route

For a gap between rock shelves, target the far side only when you can identify a surface that should accept the hook. The item reduces the amount of jumping and building needed, but it does not remove the need to select a landing area. A failed attachment means you still have to recover using ordinary movement.

Climb or exit a shaft

Deep vertical spaces are a natural use case. Aim upward at successive surfaces and reel in, releasing at each secure step if a single point does not place you at the top. This staged approach is safer than insisting on one maximum-distance attachment.

Recover from an awkward drop

If you fall onto a lower shelf and can see a valid point above, equip the Hook and begin the throw while you still have room to position yourself. The loading delay means it is better to start early than to wait until your character is already sliding or falling again.

Shorten a steep approach

You can combine normal walking with a hook attachment to bypass a particularly steep section. Use the item as one part of the route rather than assuming it replaces every climb: walk to a good firing position, pull upward, release on stable ground, and continue.

Hook versus ordinary climbing and building

The best choice depends on the route, not on a single “strongest” method. The comparison below uses the documented behavior of the Hook and the practical characteristics of ordinary alternatives; no complete numerical stamina, durability, cooldown, or fall-damage comparison is established.

Route method Vertical reach Setup time Material cost Main risk Landing requirement
Grappling Hook One attachment can cover a substantial rise; community guidance estimates about 40 m. Equip, allow the loading delay, aim, and fire. Uses the crafted tool; no building pieces are required for the throw. Missed or invalid attachment, plus the risk of releasing in the wrong place. Requires a surface that accepts the hook and a safe place to release.
Ordinary climbing and jumping Limited by terrain, movement angles, and available stamina. Immediate when the route is already passable. No special station or Hook, although food and gear still matter. Repeated jumps, slips, and exposure on steep terrain. Needs walkable footholds or successful jumps.
Building a route Can create a deliberate staircase or platform sequence. Usually slower because pieces must be placed and checked. Consumes the materials required by the chosen building pieces. Construction may be impossible where placement is blocked or unsafe. Provides explicit platforms if pieces can be supported and placed.

Use the Hook when a clear attachment point can save time or rescue a difficult position. Build when you need a predictable staircase, a broad platform, or a route that several players must use. Walk and jump when the slope is already manageable and setting up either alternative would take longer than crossing normally.

Troubleshooting missed throws and awkward landings

The hook does nothing

  • Confirm that the Grappling Hook is actually equipped rather than merely present in your inventory.
  • Account for the short loading delay before expecting the throw.
  • Move closer and aim at a broader, exposed surface.
  • Try a different angle; a nearby visual target may not be a valid attachment point from your current position.

You attached but are not moving

Press Space to reel toward the attached point. The hook does not automatically drag you the entire distance merely because the line is connected.

You reached the point but cannot land

Press right-click to release when your character is beside a stable shelf or platform. If the point leaves you hanging against a vertical face, detach, reposition, and select a higher or more horizontal target instead of repeatedly pulling into the same wall.

You keep falling before the hook fires

Begin the throw sooner to accommodate the loading delay. On routes where a miss would be fatal, use a building piece or a conventional ledge as a backup rather than relying on a last-second recovery.

The recipe is missing at the Black Forge

Verify that you personally picked up a Hook from a Dvergr treasure chest. The recipe unlock is tied to obtaining that item. Then check that the station is a Black Forge and that the required quantities—10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, 4 Mandibles, and 1 Hook—are available.

A safe route-planning checklist

  1. Identify the ledge, shaft exit, or far shelf you want to reach before equipping the tool.
  2. Move to a position with room to aim and recover if the first throw misses.
  3. Choose an exposed attachment surface within the community-estimated range of about 40 metres whenever possible.
  4. Start the throw early enough to cover the loading delay.
  5. Fire, then press Space to reel toward the point.
  6. Release with right-click only when you have a stable landing or a clear next move.
  7. If the target is invalid or too far away, fall back to ordinary climbing or a built route instead of repeating an unsafe throw.

What is confirmed and what is not

The confirmed core is straightforward: the Grappling Hook is a Mistlands-era movement tool; the first Hook comes from a Dvergr treasure chest in an Infested Mine; picking it up unlocks the Black Forge recipe; current item references list 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, 4 Mandibles, and 1 Hook; the controls are equip, wait through the loading delay, aim, fire, Space to reel, and right-click to release; and the behavior is direct pulling rather than free swinging.

The approximate 40-metre reach comes from a community reference and should be treated accordingly. No authoritative documentation establishes universal values for durability, stamina consumption, cooldown, or fall-damage rules, and the available official wording does not declare the Hook mandatory for a particular biome or boss. Keep those limits in mind when planning a route or explaining the item to other players.

Bottom line

Search Infested Mines in the Mistlands, check Dvergr treasure chests—especially rooms behind blue-glyph doors—and pick up one Hook to unlock the recipe. Craft it at a Black Forge with 10 Yggdrasil Wood, 10 Refined Eitr, 4 Mandibles, and the Hook itself. In use, allow the short loading delay, aim at a valid surface, fire, hold Space to reel in, and right-click to detach. It is best understood as a controlled pull-and-hang tool for gaining height and recovering from awkward terrain, not as a swinging rope or a required progression item.
