There is no documented one-step process that rapidly turns every Nintendo 64 game into a finished PC port. The quickest route depends on what exists for the specific game: static recompilation can translate binary instructions into C, while a decompilation-derived port builds game source against a modern compatibility layer. Neither route removes the work of handling game-specific behavior, graphics, assets, audio, and testing.
What “porting an N64 game to PC” actually involves
A tool can accelerate one part of a port without producing a complete, playable PC release. N64Recomp describes itself as “a tool to statically recompile N64 binaries into C code that can be compiled for any platform.” That describes code translation and a subsequent compile—not a guarantee that a game’s runtime, graphics, sound, input, or other systems already work on a PC. N64Recomp project README
Similarly, a decompilation that builds is a starting point for integration, not proof that the game is fully ported. The work varies by title and target release, and the available project documentation does not establish a universal compatibility rate or representative time to completion.
Choose a route based on what exists for the game
| Factor | Static recompilation | Decompilation-derived source port |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | N64 binary plus symbols and metadata; N64Recomp currently uses an ELF to supply required metadata. | Game source derived from a decompilation, plus a template project. |
| Code approach | Translates N64 instructions into C functions, which can then be compiled for a target platform. | Compiles game source for modern hardware and uses wrappers to connect N64 SDK calls to modern implementations. |
| Documented integration work | Target-platform compilation and game-specific runtime and compatibility work remain. | Build fixes, pointer-size differences, runtime debugging, graphics microcode, asset handling, and audio integration. |
| Main caveat | Recompilation is a code-translation step, not a finished PC runtime; N64Recomp also notes that its option documentation is incomplete. | A source tree does not eliminate substantial port-integration work. |
These distinctions follow the N64Recomp README and the Libultraship Porting Guide.

Use static recompilation when you can obtain the required metadata
N64Recomp splits code into functions and translates instructions into C. Its README says the current way to provide the required metadata is an ELF, and identifies an existing decompilation or disassembly as the easiest way to obtain one. If that information is unavailable for your target, the project’s documented workflow may not be immediately usable. The README also warns that documentation for every option is incomplete. Use a decompilation-derived port when game source and a compatible setup are available
Libultraship is a library for facilitating PC ports, not a binary recompilation tool. Its guide describes building source derived from a game decompilation with wrappers around modern implementations of N64 SDK functions. This route means working through the project’s build and runtime integration rather than expecting the source alone to produce a finished port. Libultraship Porting Guide
Do not mistake N64 homebrew development for a PC-port workflow
libdragon is an open-source SDK for developing software intended to run on the N64. Its references cover toolchain and development capabilities, including debugging and controller and storage support. Those resources may help with N64 development or testing behavior, but libdragon is not the PC-port method described in the Libultraship guide.

Start by identifying the exact game build
Before choosing a path, pin down the game, region, and binary revision you intend to support. Then check whether a maintained decompilation or disassembly exists and what it actually supplies: a build path, symbols, an ELF, metadata, or asset-extraction instructions. These inputs are project-specific; do not assume that a tool’s requirements or a project’s region labels apply to every N64 title.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The Mario Kart 64 build instructions illustrate why that check matters: they specify a US base ROM named baserom.us.z64 for asset extraction and list separate EU build versions. That is an example of version-sensitive project setup, not a universal filename or requirement for other games. Mario Kart 64 decompilation build instructions
Bring up the game in stages
For a source-based port, the Libultraship guide recommends aiming first for a linked executable, not a polished release. Its process involves replacing N64 SDK includes, working through compile errors, and temporarily stubbing or disabling systems where needed to get a build running. Once it runs, the next problems may be 64-bit pointer differences and behavior that only becomes visible at runtime. The guide’s advice is specific to this porting approach, rather than a guaranteed sequence for every game. Libultraship Porting Guide

- The N64 Controller Adapter allows you to connect up to two N64 Controllers to your Switch/Switch 2 System or PC Windows.
- With two N64 Controller Adapters, up to four N64 controllers can be used at the same time.
- Supports PC Xinput and Dinput.
- Supports Turbo, Auto Fire, Hold functions. The Left Stick and D-Pad can be switched. The button A and B can be switched.
Graphics depend on the game’s microcode
Check which graphics microcode the target uses. The Libultraship guide discusses both standard and custom microcode considerations, so support for one game’s graphics path should not be taken as evidence that another game will work the same way. Libultraship Porting Guide
Assets need an intentional handling path
The guide describes two broad approaches: convert assets into the library’s archive formats using game-specific exporters and importers, or handle them in raw form while accounting for byte order and bit width. Which approach is practical depends on the game’s assets and the available project tooling. Libultraship Porting Guide
Audio is a separate integration task
In the Libultraship guide, audio work includes implementing the game’s audio pipeline and routing it to a PC backend such as SDL, CoreAudio, WASAPI, or a null backend for testing. The guide generally places audio after the rest of the game is stable; treat that as its project advice, not a universal rule about port order. Libultraship Porting Guide

- Easy to Use: The converter works for both for and PC, making it convenient for players to use the for N64 joystick on both platforms without having to purchase additional controllers.
- HOME Function: The converter supports one click switching to the for and PC homepage, allowing players to easily access the main menu or return to the homepage, improving operational convenience.
- Turbo Function: The converter is equipped with the Turbo function, which enables continuous presses during gameplay, making it more convenient for players in situations that require quick combos.
- Convenient Transfer: The converter supports two for N64 joysticks connecting to the for or PC at the same time, allowing players to play with friends and enjoy competitive fun.
- Easy Installation: The converter is very easy to install, just connect the for N64 joystick to the slot of the converter, then connect the converter to the USB port of the for or PC to start playing.
Build and test against the release you intend to support
Follow the selected game project’s own build instructions for dependencies, submodules, asset extraction, and version targets. The Mario Kart 64 instructions, for example, document platform-specific dependencies and recursive submodules alongside their asset and version requirements. Those details are evidence of why reproducibility matters, not instructions to apply unchanged to another title. Mario Kart 64 decompilation build instructions
For a release you distribute or share, test the systems that make the game usable on the intended PC platform: input, graphics, audio, saves, and other game-specific behavior. Record the exact game release and known limitations so that “works” has a clear scope. The project documentation cited here does not provide a general compatibility matrix, benchmark, or representative porting-time estimate. The Libultraship guide mentions a one-day Star Fox 64 “mini-build”; that is an anecdote about a mini-build, not evidence that a finished port takes one day. Libultraship Porting Guide
Understand the U.S. legal limits
For U.S. readers, 17 U.S.C. § 1201(f) describes a limited allowance for a person who lawfully obtained the right to use a copy of a computer program to identify and analyze elements needed for interoperability with an independently created program, subject to the statute’s conditions and to the extent the acts do not constitute infringement. The statute’s language is limited to acts “for the sole purpose of identifying and analyzing those elements of the program that are necessary to achieve interoperability of an independently created computer program with other programs.” It is not blanket permission to copy or distribute game code or assets, bypass any protection, or publish a port. 17 U.S.C. § 1201, U.S. Copyright Office statutory text

Accolade, Inc., a 1992 Ninth Circuit case, reports that the court found the reverse engineering at issue to be fair use for a compatibility purpose.
