You can preinstall an Xbox game only when that game and platform make a pre-download available; a pre-order does not guarantee that the full game can be downloaded early. On Windows, use the Xbox PC app to find and download PC games. In either case, check the title’s listed requirements and make sure the selected drive has room for the full package.
Preinstalling a game on an Xbox console
Pre-download timing and availability depend on the game and platform. Microsoft’s publishing documentation describes a pre-download date for games whose publishers enable the background-download functionality; that describes a capability, not a guarantee that every pre-order includes a full preinstall. Check the game’s official Store listing or Xbox app for a pre-install option and the package available to download. Check storage before starting
Microsoft’s documentation says the pre-order installation process directs the customer to a drive with enough space for the full package. Check the game’s displayed size and the selected drive’s available capacity before beginning. If more than one location is offered, compare whether the game supports it, whether it has enough free space, and whether it is suitable for the device and version you intend to play.
Downloading PC games with the Xbox app
The Xbox PC app lets you browse, download, and launch PC games, including games in the Game Pass library. Game Pass is a separate subscription. The app’s minimum requirements are Windows 10 or 11, version 22H2 or higher, a 720p display, and 150 MB of storage for the app itself; game installations need additional space, and each game has its own system requirements. - Open or install the Xbox PC app, then find the PC version of the game you want.
- Check that title’s system requirements and the amount of available space on your PC.
- Choose the game’s install location, if the app offers a location control, and start the download.
Installing to an external drive
Some Windows games can be installed on removable storage, but support is controlled by the publisher. Microsoft’s publishing guide says removable-storage support is enabled by default but can be disabled for an individual game. Check that game’s install-location options rather than assuming an external drive will work. Microsoft’s removable-storage documentation describes the setting; it does not establish comparative speed for particular drives.
Managing remote installs and download queues
Xbox provides support information for remote installs, but current exact button names and paths for starting, pausing, cancelling, redirecting, or managing a queue could not be verified from the accessible support instructions. Check the live Xbox Support install-games guidance for the current steps before changing console or app settings.

If a purchased game is missing after release
Open the game’s Microsoft Store listing. If its button has changed to Install, select it to install the released game. If you are unsure whether the purchase completed, check your order history. Microsoft also notes that digital pre-orders paid with Microsoft account funds are charged immediately; other payment methods may be charged up to ten days before release.
