Path of Exile 2 pre-download instructions depend on the platform and the specific launch or update. For the current event, check Grinding Gear Games’ latest announcement and the game’s page in your platform library: preload dates, download sizes, and available methods can change, and past event details are not a standing schedule.
How to pre-download Path of Exile 2
- Check the event announcement. Find the latest Path of Exile 2 post from Grinding Gear Games (GGG) for the launch or update you want. Confirm whether it concerns the initial game client or an update, when the download opens, and which platforms are included.
- Confirm you can access the game. Pre-download eligibility can vary by event. For the August 2025 The Third Edict update, GGG said only players with Path of Exile 2 access could pre-download it; do not assume every future preload has the same conditions.
- Open the correct platform library or client. If GGG announces a preload for your platform, use the method it specifies. Check your library or the game’s store page for a download or update option.
- Allow for any remaining update. A pre-download may not contain every file needed to play. Follow GGG’s event instructions and let the platform finish any final patch when it becomes available.
Choose the method for your platform
| Platform or client | What to do | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone PC client | Use the standalone client download or an explicitly announced torrent. | Methods are event-specific. A torrent may not work with other PC clients and may not include every file. |
| Steam | Check Path of Exile 2 in your Steam Library for the announced preload or update. | Do not use a GGG torrent unless GGG says it supports Steam; its December 2025 torrent did not. |
| Epic Games Store | Check your Epic Games Store Library for the announced preload or update. | GGG’s December 2025 torrent could not be used with Epic. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Check the Xbox game listing or library for the announced pre-download. | Availability depends on the event. |
| PlayStation 5 | Check the PlayStation Store or game library for the announced pre-download. | Availability depends on the event. |
Why old preload dates and instructions may not apply
GGG’s directions have differed between events. For the December 2024 Early Access launch, its FAQ initially said the standalone PC client would be downloadable at 5 p.m. Thursday, December 5 (PST), Xbox pre-download was already available, and PS5 Founder’s Packs were expected to go live 24 hours before Early Access. The later launch guide confirmed pre-download through the standalone client, Steam, Epic, Xbox, and PS5, and said GGG had decided not to use the previously planned torrent. These were instructions for that launch, not a current schedule. See GGG’s Early Access FAQ and launch guide.

Later updates used different arrangements. GGG’s August 2025 The Third Edict FAQ described a standalone PC torrent available the day before launch and early console patch downloads, with access required to pre-download. For the December 2025 The Last of the Druids update, GGG offered a torrent for existing PC players and console pre-downloads. The torrent contained only the GGPK file, could not be used with Steam or Epic, and still required a few remaining files to be updated once patching began.
Check storage before downloading
Steam’s Path of Exile 2 PC listing specifies 100 GB of available storage and recommends solid-state storage. Check the current Steam listing and the relevant console store for their latest requirements; listings can change. The SSD recommendation is not evidence that an SSD is required just to preload.
Download-size figures also depend on the event and method. GGG estimated its December 2025 PC torrent at 127 GB because it included existing client content, while noting that some files would still need updating. That number describes that torrent, not the general installed size or a future preload.

- Check that GGG has announced pre-download for your event and platform; an announcement for another platform or earlier update may not apply.
- Verify that the account or edition you are using meets that event’s access requirements.
- Look in the platform’s library as well as the store page, then check GGG’s post for the stated start time and method.
- If the instructions offer a torrent, confirm that it supports your client before downloading it. GGG’s December 2025 torrent was for the standalone PC client, not Steam or Epic.
- Make room for the download and any final patch. A pre-download does not necessarily mean all files are ready to play.
No event-specific preload date, size, or method for a future Path of Exile 2 launch is established here. Treat those details as unannounced until GGG publishes instructions for that event.
