For a standard SDR YouTube Live stream, send an 8-bit Rec. 709 output. If your footage is HDR, tone-map or convert it to SDR before or during encoding; changing an output bit-depth setting alone does not guarantee a correct HDR-to-SDR conversion. YouTube’s current live guidance distinguishes the SDR target from its separate 10-bit HDR workflow.
First, distinguish 10-bit footage from HDR footage
Bit depth describes how many tonal or color steps a signal can represent; HDR describes a wider brightness range and associated color signaling. A 10-bit file is not automatically HDR. Inspect the footage’s color metadata and determine whether it uses an HDR transfer function such as PQ or HLG before choosing a conversion.
This guide is for an ordinary SDR live stream. YouTube specifies 8-bit and Rec. 709 for SDR ingest. Its separate HDR guidance specifies 10-bit and HDR color signaling. These target settings concern the signal you send to YouTube, not simply the format of the source file. YouTube’s live encoder settings and HDR live-stream guidance describe the respective workflows.
Prepare HDR footage for an SDR stream
- Confirm SDR is the intended result. If you want viewers with compatible displays to receive HDR, use YouTube’s HDR workflow instead; the steps below target SDR.
- Inspect the source. Check whether the footage is genuinely HDR and, if so, identify its transfer function, such as PQ or HLG. Do not infer HDR solely from a 10-bit label.
- Convert or tone-map HDR to SDR. Use the controls in your editor, media pipeline, or encoder to map highlights and color into the SDR range. The right transform depends on the source and software. YouTube’s cited pages do not prescribe a universal tone-mapping recipe or encoder-specific control values, so use the current manual for your exact software and version.
- Set the outgoing signal to SDR. Configure 8-bit output and Rec. 709. Check that the encoder is actually sending the converted SDR signal, rather than merely labeling unconverted HDR footage as SDR.
- Test before the event. Send a private or otherwise suitable test stream with representative movement and audio. Review the Live Control Room preview and stream health, then inspect the result on an SDR display. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and movement and monitoring stream health while live.
SDR settings and how they differ from HDR
| Setting | Standard SDR stream | YouTube HDR stream |
|---|---|---|
| Bit depth | 8-bit | 10-bit |
| Color signaling | Rec. 709 | BT.2020 primaries with PQ or HLG transfer characteristics, matching the source |
| Codec | Use a codec supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance | HEVC (H.265) |
| OBS example | Configure SDR output; tone-map HDR sources as required by the specific software and version | YouTube documents an OBS 30.1-or-later setup using compatible hardware HEVC, Main 10, P010, and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG |
| Viewer presentation | Standard dynamic range | HDR on supported devices; SDR presentation on unsupported devices |
The HDR column is a different delivery target, not a required purchase or setting for converting footage to SDR. For a standard SDR stream, follow YouTube’s live encoder guidance for the remaining encoder settings, including its codec and bitrate recommendations.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Live settings that still matter
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Stream health: Check the Live Control Room preview and health indicators during the test and the event.
- Playback expectations: YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. That helps deliver playback choices, but it does not replace sending the correct SDR signal at ingest. Displays and viewing conditions vary, so the image will not necessarily look identical on every screen.
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not independent performance measurements. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The SDR image looks washed out or highlights are clipped. The HDR-to-SDR transform may be missing or unsuitable. Confirm the source’s PQ or HLG metadata and apply an appropriate tone map in the editor or encoder before the SDR output.
- The stream is identified or displayed as HDR when SDR was intended. Check the encoder’s outgoing color signaling and ensure it is configured for 8-bit Rec. 709 after conversion.
- The file is 10-bit, but you are unsure whether conversion is needed. Verify its dynamic-range and color metadata first; bit depth alone does not establish that it is HDR.
- The preview looks different from the source monitor. Confirm that both are being viewed as SDR and that the stream has completed processing. Different displays and viewing conditions can also produce different appearances.
- The stream reports instability or playback issues. Test representative motion and audio, check the encoder’s output against YouTube’s current settings guidance, and monitor stream health rather than assuming YouTube’s playback transcoding will correct an ingest problem.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the finished SDR video should play as a continuous YouTube stream, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload the prepared video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; your computer, OBS, and home connection can be off. Every quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
