Prepare for Pendola Pass by carrying a deliberate ranged option or a close-range sidearm, bringing movement and control gadgets, and arranging your inventory for a run that can shift from open valley fighting to cramped interiors. Embark specifically advised players to stock up on Tethers and the Grapple Hook, but that is developer guidance rather than proof that any single item is mandatory.
There is no officially established best build, exact flash-freeze countermeasure, or universally strongest weapon. The useful preparation is to match your loadout to the documented jobs of the Stiletto, Bantam, Grapple Hook, Tether Launcher and Yank Grenade, then use the Outpost, Research Workstation and revised Skill Tree to adapt your equipment as you learn Pendola Pass.

What Frozen Trail changes for your preparation
Pendola Pass is an old Italian village and former Exodus transport hub beyond the Rust Belt. Its spaces combine exposed approaches with structures, passageways and vertical routes. The official preview warns that brutal flash freezes cut through the valley. It does not establish their damage, duration, rotation schedule or a specific item that negates them, so preparation should emphasize flexibility rather than a claimed cold-immunity setup.
The update also adds the Frigate, a close-quarters challenge inside a large transport vessel. You must navigate internal passageways, unlock routes and contend with ARC and other Raiders. That makes a loadout built only for distant shots risky once a door, corridor or objective forces a short engagement.

Threats described in the launch material reinforce that mixed approach:
- Bully: aggressive and fast-moving. Embark recommends using cover, timing your response and landing your shots rather than trying to trade damage in the open.
- Skulker: stalks players and attacks when they are distracted. Keep enough attention and ammunition for an interruption while looting, reviving or opening a route.
- Hydra: the live update post identifies it as a squad threat protecting the Emperor and the Frigate. Expect the objective area to demand coordination and an escape plan, not just a single target burn.
- Other Raiders: the Frigate preview explicitly describes competing Raiders in close quarters, so sound, cover and controllable movement matter alongside raw damage.
The update includes 22 new quests. You can therefore prepare for repeated objective runs instead of treating your first expedition as a one-off boss attempt. Keep a reusable core kit, then change one weapon or gadget when a quest or route exposes a weakness.
Choose a weapon around its documented job
The two new firearms have clearly different roles. The official descriptions support a practical comparison, but they do not provide damage tests, time-to-kill measurements or a ranking against every existing weapon.

When the Stiletto makes sense
The Stiletto is the clearer choice for a player who wants to start an engagement from distance and take deliberate shots. Its light-ammo classification also gives you a way to build around a different heavy-ammo reserve for a second weapon or future pickup. That is an ammunition-management advantage, not evidence that the rifle outperforms the Renegade or any other rifle in every situation.
On Pendola Pass, use cover and pause between shots rather than treating the Stiletto as a spray weapon. The Bully’s speed and the Skulker’s ambush behavior mean that a ranged plan needs a fallback. Keep an exit route and a close-range answer available before you commit to a sightline.

When the Bantam makes sense
The Bantam is the documented choice when a heavy-ammo revolver fits your route. Embark says it is effective against ARC and Raiders, and its hip-fire capability is relevant when a Raider or ARC threat appears at arm’s length. That makes it a natural companion for a player expecting interiors, sudden pushes or a second weapon that can finish a target without aiming down sights.
Heavy ammunition is a resource decision. Carrying the Bantam does not establish that you should abandon a primary weapon, nor does the source material establish how many rounds a run requires. Take enough ammunition for the encounters you intend to fight, leave room for quest items and extraction supplies, and adjust after observing your own consumption.

Pick the Stiletto if the route is built around open approaches and deliberate ranged damage. Pick the Bantam if your priority is a heavy-ammo revolver that can answer ARC and Raider pressure at close distance. If you do not yet know which spaces a quest will force you through, select the weapon that covers the engagement distance you personally handle less confidently, then use gadgets to compensate for the other range.
Pack movement and control gadgets deliberately
Frozen Trail adds several ways to change position or limit a target. They are not interchangeable, and the official descriptions support different preparation choices.

It is not documented as a damage tool or as protection from flash freezes.

Embark’s launch announcement tells players to stock up on the Grapple Hook. Read that as a developer recommendation to have the item available while learning the new map, not as a tested requirement for every successful expedition. Carry one when the route has meaningful verticality or when your group lacks another way to cross a gap; do not assume the Hook alone solves every traversal problem.

Tethers and the Yank Grenade: control and setup
The Tether Launcher and Yank Grenade are control tools. The launcher connects points, while the grenade can root targets or pull them. Their value is creating time and space: interrupt a push, hold an enemy in a vulnerable position, or move a target away from the place where you are trying to unlock a path.
Use control before you need it. In the Frigate, a tether or pull can be more useful at the mouth of a passage than after several enemies have entered the room. Against a fast Bully, plan where you want the target to be when the control effect lands, and keep cover between you and the enemy while setting up. The sources do not establish effect duration, range, cooldown or reliability against every enemy, so avoid promising a guaranteed stop.
Build for Pendola Pass’s mixed spaces
A sensible preparation process starts with the route, not with a claim that one loadout is best.
- Identify the likely engagement distance. Open village approaches favor a deliberate ranged plan; the Frigate’s passageways favor a weapon and gadget that remain usable at short range.
- Reserve a response to speed. The Bully is described as aggressive and fast-moving. Keep cover nearby, avoid spending every shot on distant targets, and decide in advance where you will retreat if the enemy closes the gap.
- Protect attention while looting. The Skulker attacks when players are distracted. Before opening containers or interacting with an objective, check the immediate space and keep a weapon ready rather than emptying the magazine into an unrelated target.
- Plan for a squad threat. The Hydra protects the Emperor and Frigate according to the live update post. Enter with a route to cover and an extraction idea; do not carry only the ammunition needed for a single isolated enemy.
- Keep a traversal answer. If your route includes a gap or elevated position, the Grapple Hook can provide access or an escape. If the route is primarily about stopping an approach, favor a control item instead.

- Unknown quest route: Choose the weapon you use most reliably, add one movement or control tool rather than duplicating a function, and leave inventory room for quest objectives. Change the setup after the first run reveals whether distance, verticality or close-quarters pressure is the real problem.
Use the Outpost and Research Workstation before chasing amplified weapons
Amplified weapons are tied to the update’s progression systems. First unlock the Outpost by completing its project. The Research Workstation then provides access to weapon research and customization systems. This is preparation work, not a reason to enter Pendola Pass with an untested weapon and assume its amplified version will solve every encounter.
Organize your progression in a deliberate order:
- Complete the Outpost project. Until the project is complete, the Outpost’s progression role is not available to you.
- Use the Research Workstation. Review the weapon research and customization options it exposes before committing resources.
- Research around your actual problem. If your runs fail during long approaches, investigate options that support your ranged plan. If you fail in interiors, investigate the weapon or customization path that supports close-range control. The official notes do not establish a single amplified weapon as universally superior.
- Test one change at a time. Keep the rest of your loadout familiar so you can tell whether a research or customization change helped with Pendola Pass’s specific pressure.
The maximum stash size is 328 slots without Expedition bonuses, according to Embark’s October 8, 2026 update notes. That number is inventory context, not a recommendation to fill every slot. Use the capacity to keep distinct ammunition and gadget options available, but avoid carrying so much that quest items or a needed replacement cannot fit.
Spend Skill Tree points with the new choice rules in mind
The Skill Tree was revised to make choice and expression more central. The official notes describe a binary choice in the middle branch. At the end branches, you can select up to two of three skills after meeting the required point investment.
That structure changes how you prepare:
- Do not assume every branch can be taken. A middle-branch choice can close off its alternative, so read the two options before spending points for a Pendola Pass run.
- Meet the point requirement before planning the end branch. The ability to select up to two of three end-branch skills comes only after the stated investment threshold is reached.
- Match the choice to your failure mode. Select options that address whether you are losing fights during traversal, while handling close pressure, or while trying to complete objectives. The notes explain the structure, not a best combination for every player.
- Reconsider after several runs. A skill that feels valuable in open village approaches may be less important in Frigate passageways. Keep your weapon and gadget observations separate from your skill decision so you know what actually changed the outcome.
Embark summarized the purpose of the overhaul by saying, “The goal of the Skill Tree revamp is twofold: to look at under-performing skills, modify or replace them, and to get closer to the goal of making choice and expression a more core feature of the Skill Tree.” Treat that as the design intent rather than a promise that one branch is optimal.

The update changes existing equipment, which matters when you are reusing an older preparation routine.

Do not treat the Snap Hook and Grapple Hook as duplicates. The notes frame Snap Hook as burst mobility, while the Grapple Hook is the new traversal tool for high spots, rappelling and gaps. Choose based on the route and the cost you are prepared to pay, then observe whether the item actually gives you an escape when a Bully or Raider closes in.
A pre-deployment checklist
Use this checklist immediately before a Pendola Pass expedition:
- Weapon role: confirm whether your primary plan is deliberate ranged fire with the Stiletto or a heavy-ammo revolver response with the Bantam.
- Ammunition: bring ammunition appropriate to the weapon you selected, while leaving room for quest items and replacements. No official source establishes a universal round count.
- Traversal: add the Grapple Hook when high ground, rappelling or gaps are part of the route, following Embark’s advice to stock up while learning the map.
- Control: consider the Tether Launcher or Yank Grenade when rooting, pulling or connecting positions will help manage a push.
- Close-quarters fallback: do not enter the Frigate assuming every fight will happen at rifle distance.
- Cover and retreat: identify where you will move if a Bully charges, a Skulker interrupts a task, or the Hydra encounter escalates.
- Progression: check whether the Outpost project is complete and whether the Research Workstation offers a customization that addresses your current weakness.
- Skill points: verify the binary middle-branch decision and the point requirement for selecting up to two end-branch skills.
- Inventory space: remember the 328-slot maximum without Expedition bonuses, but do not fill capacity at the expense of objective flexibility.
- Patch awareness: balance and schedules can change. Recheck Embark’s current patch notes before relying on these numbers or making a long-term stockpile plan.
What is still unknown about surviving the cold
The official materials establish that flash freezes cut through the valley and that the environment is a central part of Pendola Pass. They do not establish exact damage, timing, duration, rotation times or a named cold-resistance item. Therefore, do not buy into a claimed single cold countermeasure based only on the update description.
Likewise, the sources identify weapon roles and gadget functions, but they do not provide comparative testing. There is no supported universal ranking of the Stiletto against the Renegade, no measured Bantam damage advantage, and no tested loadout that guarantees success against the Hydra, Emperor or Frigate. Record what happens in your own runs and change one variable at a time.
The ARC Raiders Team described the launch this way: “The cold has arrived, and it’s brought a lot with it.” That is a useful warning about variety, not a mechanical specification. Prepare for several kinds of problem—distance, speed, close quarters, traversal and contested objectives—rather than trying to solve an undocumented freeze mechanic in advance.
How to adapt after your first run
After extracting or failing, review the run in a fixed order:
- Where did the first serious damage occur? Open sightline, interior passage, traversal mistake, or objective defense?
- Which resource ran out first? Light ammo, heavy ammo, movement access or control tools?
- Did the route require a vertical escape? If yes, add or retain the Grapple Hook; if not, a control tool may provide more value on that route.
- Did a fast enemy force a panic fight? Reposition your cover plan and keep the Bantam or another close-range answer available if that is the documented role you need.
- Was progression the limiting factor? Return to the Outpost project, Research Workstation and Skill Tree choices rather than repeatedly changing weapons without unlocking the systems intended to customize them.
Make the next run a controlled experiment: change the weapon, gadget or skill decision most directly connected to the failure, not the entire loadout at once. That approach gives you useful information without pretending the official notes have already identified an optimal build.
