Start with the exact game’s current PC requirements—not a generic gaming-PC checklist. Compare your system with the listed operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware, platform requirements and storage, then update Windows and your graphics driver before launch. Minimum specs are a floor, not a promise of smooth performance.
Check the game’s official PC requirements first
Find the requirements for the exact game and PC edition on its official store or developer page. Record both minimum and recommended specifications, including operating system, processor, memory, graphics card, DirectX or other stated platform requirements, storage capacity and any special hardware notes. Requirements vary by title and can change, so check the listing again close to release.
Compare those figures with your PC’s actual components. In Windows, you can see basic system details in Settings → System → About; for graphics hardware, open Device Manager → Display adapters. If you are unsure which component a requirement refers to, check the PC or component maker’s documentation rather than guessing from a model name.
Minimum does not mean trouble-free
Minimum requirements indicate a baseline, not a guaranteed frame rate or a promise that every system at that level will launch reliably. Steam Support warns: “Games may not launch if your machine is just at or below the game’s system requirements.” Steam’s launch troubleshooting guide recommends comparing the computer against the game’s requirements when diagnosing launch problems.

If your PC is at or below the minimum line, be realistic about the risk of launch or performance issues. Recommended specifications are the better comparison point when deciding whether your system has headroom; neither line alone establishes a specific frame rate.
Check storage capacity and drive type
Look at the target drive’s free space and compare it with the game’s current storage requirement. Check which drive the launcher will use; available space on another drive does not help if the game is being installed elsewhere. Leave additional room if the game’s publisher or launcher calls for it, such as for updates or installation work.

Drive requirements are title-specific. For example, Larian Studios lists Baldur’s Gate 3 for Windows as requiring an SSD and 150 GB of available SSD space. That is a requirement for that game, not a universal rule for new releases. Other listings may specify different capacities or describe SSD use differently.
Do not buy a drive just because a major release is approaching. Consider one only if the exact game requires or recommends SSD storage, or your current compatible storage does not have enough capacity. Before choosing an internal SSD, verify its capacity, physical form factor and interface, and confirm that your desktop or laptop has a compatible connection and available installation slot.

Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install relevant pending Windows updates and check whether the graphics-card maker has released a current driver for your GPU. Use the manufacturer’s official support channel; Steam points players to NVIDIA, AMD and Intel. For laptops with customized graphics drivers, the PC maker’s support page may be the appropriate source. Avoid third-party driver-download sites.
EA Help also recommends checking Windows and graphics drivers when addressing graphics problems, and notes that GPU manufacturers often release drivers around major launches: EA’s PC graphics troubleshooting guide. A driver update is worth checking, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every launch or performance issue.

Use a release-week checklist
Before launch week
- Save the game’s official minimum and recommended requirements for the correct PC edition.
- Compare your operating system, processor, memory, graphics hardware and platform support with the listing.
- Check free space on the drive you intend to use and note whether the game requires or recommends a particular drive type.
- Install relevant Windows updates and check the GPU maker’s official channel for an appropriate graphics driver.
On or near release day
- Restart your PC before diagnosing a launch problem. Steam recommends trying its launch troubleshooting steps after a fresh restart.
- If the game is installed but content or textures are missing, or it crashes, verify its files using the platform’s tool. In Steam, open Library → right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes; do not verify multiple games at once or run it alongside intensive disk work. See Steam’s file-verification instructions.
- If the game still will not launch, compare your PC with the requirements again and consult the game developer or platform support. Steam identifies software conflicts as one possible cause; disabling non-essential software can be a troubleshooting step, but do not turn off security protections wholesale.
