Preserve a PC game as more than a folder of files: keep the exact edition you acquired, its installer or original media, patches and manuals, an independent backup, and notes that explain how it ran. This record lets you reinstall after a disk failure, identify what changed in a re-release, and troubleshoot an older title without relying on a storefront, one computer, or your memory.
What PC-game preservation actually means
A useful personal archive preserves both bytes and context. The bytes are the lawfully acquired game files, installers, disc contents, updates and documentation. The context is the edition, release or build, language, distributor, operating system, launcher, DRM, settings and compatibility workarounds that make those files usable later.

Preservation is not the same as making a copy available to other people. Keep your archive for your own lawful use, do not obtain unauthorized downloads, and do not assume that owning a license gives you permission to redistribute game files.

Its guidance is aimed at collection submissions, not a mandatory home-backup specification, but it provides a useful hierarchy: uncompiled source code, a gold-master build, and then a distribution file such as a Windows executable. Most players can realistically retain the original media or the lawful distribution files they received.

Start by identifying the exact edition
“The game” may refer to a 1998 disc release, a patched retail build, a digital re-release, a regional edition or a later compilation. Record the identity before copying anything so that a future reinstall does not silently substitute a different version.
Make an edition record
- Title, subtitle and edition name, including words such as Gold, Complete, Director’s Cut or a collection title.
- Publisher, developer and distributor, if known.
- Source: physical disc, boxed installer, download store, magazine disc or another lawful distribution channel.
- Region and language.
- Release date, build number, executable version or patch level.
- Date you acquired or copied the files.
- Receipt, product key, activation record or other ownership documentation, stored privately with the archive.
Do not label a repack, remaster or later re-release as the original release. If you retain several editions, give each its own folder and manifest.
Suggested folder structure
Game-Title--Edition--Region--Language--Build/Inside it, keep clearly named subfolders such as 01-original-media, 02-installer, 03-patches, 04-manuals-and-readme, 05-config-and-saves and 06-compatibility-notes. The names are a practical convention, not a requirement; the important point is that an unfamiliar future you can distinguish original files from later fixes.

Keep the best lawful source material
For disc and boxed releases
Retain the original discs, printed manual, product key, quick-start sheet, errata and any included installation or support files. Photograph or scan paper documentation for convenience, but keep the physical originals when they contain information that a scan could lose, such as a disc-specific key or copy-protection instruction.
If you create a digital image or copy of a disc, the legality depends on your jurisdiction and the circumstances, especially where copy-protection circumvention is involved. Explain the source and date in your notes; do not direct anyone to an unauthorized image.
For digital releases
Save the actual installer or distribution files when the service permits lawful offline retention. Include every patch, language pack, expansion and redistributable that you are entitled to access. A launcher download cache may not be a complete installer, so identify what each file is before moving it into long-term storage.
Keep a copy of the installer’s filename and size in the manifest. If an installer requires an account, activation server or launcher, record that dependency rather than assuming the files will install independently in the future.

Include the surrounding documentation
Preserve manuals, readme files, patch notes, addenda, known-issues documents and publisher support pages when available. The Library of Congress recommends descriptive information such as title, creator, creation date, place of publication, publisher or producer, rights information and identifiers. Those fields make an archive searchable and help distinguish near-identical releases.
Make an independent backup
Keep the retained files off the computer used for play as well as on it. A separate external USB hard drive is a recognized mass-storage category in the Library of Congress’s preservation guidance. That source does not prescribe a consumer capacity, drive brand, backup interval, cloud service or checksum routine, so choose those according to the size and value of your collection.
A practical two-copy arrangement
- Keep the working installation and saves on the gaming computer.
- Copy the installer, original-media image or disc contents, patches and documentation to an external drive.
- Disconnect the external drive when it is not being updated; this protects it from many accidental deletions and some malware events.
- For irreplaceable material, maintain a second independent copy in another location or on another storage medium.
Label the drive and each top-level folder with the exact title, edition, region, language and build. A label such as “old games” is not enough to identify which files belong to which release.
Use a manifest and optional checksums
A small text file or spreadsheet can list installer names, patch versions, file sizes, acquisition dates, requirements and the location of save files. You may also record checksums. State the algorithm, the files checked and the date of the calculation. A checksum detects later changes to the same file; it does not prove that the file is authentic unless you compare it with a trustworthy reference value.
Write compatibility notes that another person could reproduce
Compatibility notes should describe a real setup and a repeatable result, not a vague claim that a forum post or old wiki entry “works.” For every edition, record the following.
- Operating system: Windows version or other operating system, including whether 32-bit or 64-bit behavior matters.
- Game identity: edition, language, build and patch level.
- Activation and DRM: disc checks, serial-key prompts, offline activation limits, launcher requirements and external services.
- Hardware assumptions: CPU or graphics expectations, resolution, display mode, audio device and controller setup.
- Compatibility changes: operating-system compatibility settings, community patches, wrappers, emulators or configuration files, with their version and source.
- Test record: who tested it, on what hardware and operating system, and on what date.
Write “tested on Windows 11 24H2 with a 64-bit installation” only when you actually performed that test. If the information comes from a community reference, label it as an unverified lead until you check the exact title and version yourself.
Use community references as leads, not authority
PCGamingWiki pages commonly expose fields for source, DRM, keys, notes and operating systems. Those fields can quickly reveal likely obstacles, but entries may change and may describe a different edition. Cross-check them against the publisher or developer documentation, the installer contents and the build you have archived.

Record the settings that matter
Note the resolution and aspect ratio, windowed or fullscreen mode, renderer, audio mode, controller mapping, save-game location and any required configuration file. Include the exact filename and path when a fix depends on editing a configuration file. If a wrapper or patch changes rendering, sound or timing, state that effect so a future player can choose between historical fidelity and convenience.
How to reinstall a game without the launcher
Whether this is possible depends on how the edition was distributed. An installer that contains all required files may work offline; a launcher-managed title may still require account authentication, a service endpoint or a downloaded component.

For an offline attempt, work from your archived installer or original media, apply only the patches documented for that edition, and consult your notes for required settings. If the installer stops at an activation or service step, do not bypass it by downloading an unauthorized replacement; document the dependency and investigate the lawful options in your jurisdiction.
How to get an old PC game running on Windows 11
Windows updates and graphics-driver changes can affect older games. GOG’s Preservation Program FAQ similarly explains that compatibility can change as Windows and drivers change. Treat a modern test as a dated observation, not a permanent guarantee.
- Identify the build. Confirm the edition, executable version, language and patch level before changing files.
- Install in a separate test location. Keep the untouched installer and original files read-only or in a separate backup so experiments can be reversed.
- Apply documented compatibility settings. Test display mode, administrator behavior, high-DPI options and other settings one at a time, recording each change.
- Check dependencies. Look for required runtime components, disc checks, launchers, account sign-in and network authentication. Record an exact error message rather than paraphrasing it.
- Test graphics and audio. Start with conservative resolution and windowed mode, then change one variable at a time. Note whether a fix affects frame pacing, sound, timing or visual effects.
- Verify saves and exits. Confirm where saves are written, whether the game can load them, and whether it closes without corruption.
- Update the compatibility note. Add the hardware, Windows build, driver date, settings, result and test date. Mark unresolved issues clearly.
A community patch, wrapper or emulator can be useful, but preserve its exact version and source alongside the game notes. Do not overwrite the original files without retaining a clean copy; otherwise you may lose the ability to reproduce the unmodified edition.

What to save before a game is delisted
Before a listing disappears, capture the files and information that a future reinstall is most likely to need:
- The installer or permitted download files, including expansions, language files and updates.
- Product keys, receipts and account details stored securely rather than in a public note.
- Manuals, readme files, patch notes, support documents and configuration instructions.
- The game’s version, platform, region, language and launcher or DRM requirements.
- Save-game paths and a copy of your own saves, where the license and platform allow you to retain them.
- A dated test report showing whether the archived build installs and runs on your current system.
A delisting does not by itself establish that a game may be copied or downloaded from an unofficial source. Preserve what you lawfully acquired, and treat later access questions as a separate legal and technical issue.

Maintained re-releases: useful, but not identical by definition
GOG describes its Preservation Program as maintaining selected classic titles, providing DRM-free releases and dedicated technical support. Its FAQ says the team performs quality tests and updates games when needed, that titles remain in the initiative if they are delisted from sale, and that the program is currently Windows-only. These are the program’s stated claims, not a guarantee that every classic game, platform or edition is covered.
A maintained re-release can be the easiest route to a current installation, but compare it with your archive before treating it as a replacement. Check whether the edition includes the same content, whether fixes alter timing or graphics, whether an account or launcher is required, and whether the installer can be retained for offline use. Keep the original media or installer when historical fidelity matters.
Legal boundaries for copying and circumvention
Copyright and anti-circumvention rules vary by country. In the United States, 37 CFR § 201.40 contains narrow exemptions for specified video-game activities; it is not a general right to copy any game you own or to distribute “abandonware.”
Personal local play after an authentication server closes
One provision concerns a lawfully acquired complete game when the copyright owner or authorized representative has ceased providing access to an external server needed for authentication. Under the regulation’s conditions, restoration for personal local gameplay may be permitted. The rule defines “ceased to provide access” with conditions involving an affirmative statement plus discontinued support, or at least six months without support and no restoration.
Libraries, archives and museums
Another provision covers eligible libraries, archives and museums preserving qualifying games that are no longer reasonably available. It includes restrictions such as a noncommercial purpose and no access outside institutional premises. Those institutional permissions should not be presented as a consumer entitlement.
Check the law where you live, and obtain professional advice for a particular copying or circumvention decision. The safest preservation practice is to retain the files and documentation you lawfully received without sharing them publicly.

A compact preservation checklist
- Exact title, edition, region, language and build recorded.
- Original media or lawful installer retained.
- All entitled patches, expansions, manuals and readme files collected.
- Product key, receipt or ownership record stored securely.
- Independent external copy made and clearly labeled.
- Manifest lists filenames, sizes, dates and versions.
- Operating-system, hardware, DRM and launcher requirements documented.
- Compatibility settings, patches and wrappers identified with versions and sources.
- Actual test date, tester and setup recorded; unverified claims marked as such.
- Legal questions checked against the rules in the relevant jurisdiction.
