Then verify where each kind of progress is stored and preserve it using the game’s supported method. A device or platform backup can protect only data included in that copy; it cannot retrieve progress held solely on a publisher’s servers.
What you can—and cannot—preserve
Games may store progress on your device, synchronize eligible saves through a platform or game cloud service, keep data on publisher servers, or combine these approaches. A save file, inventory, account progression, purchases, and a hosted world may each follow a different route. There is no universal export method, and copying a local file does not prove that it contains your online character or world.
Identify the exact game, edition, platform, account, and mode before taking action. The official support page and shutdown notice for that specific title are the best places to confirm which data can be downloaded, transferred, restored, or played offline.
Preserve progress in this order
- Read the official shutdown notice. Note the shutdown date, any export or migration deadline, supported destinations, and what the offer includes. Look specifically for a save download, world snapshot, account transfer, account-linking instructions, cross-progression, or offline-play option. A shutdown does not automatically include an export.
- Check where each type of progress lives. Consult official documentation for the game and platform, and confirm which account or profile owns the save. If the title supports cloud saves, check that the latest session has synchronized before switching devices, reinstalling, deleting the app, or removing a profile.
- Use account linking only when the game recommends it. EA, for example, says SimCity BuildIt saves progress to the device and recommends linking a supported account service to recover a city after reinstalling. EA also advises saving on the original device before trying another one. This is guidance for SimCity BuildIt, not a general transfer recipe.
- Copy accessible local files separately. If the game and platform let you access the save files, keep the original and make a dated copy. An external SSD or hard drive can serve as a second destination for accessible files or a downloaded archive, but storage hardware cannot preserve data that exists only on a publisher’s server.
- Inspect any publisher-provided archive. Check its snapshot date, contents, file format, download window, and restoration instructions. A downloadable archive may be a fixed snapshot rather than a live transfer, and may omit data. Choose the snapshot that best fits your goal.
- Do not test recovery on your only copy. Keep originals, note filenames and dates, and follow the publisher’s import or restore steps. A copied file alone does not establish that online characters, inventory, purchases, or account progress are included.
How the preservation routes differ
When a game offers more than one option, compare what it contains, who controls it, whether it remains usable after shutdown, its deadline and account requirements, whether it is a live transfer or dated snapshot, and where it can be restored.

Why a cloud save or backup may not be enough
Cloud-save behavior varies by game. Netflix Help Center explains that games on Netflix can save “either through cloud saves or locally on your device”; its guidance distinguishes games with cloud saves from those whose saves are local. Check the instructions for the particular game rather than assuming that a platform backup includes publisher-held progress.
KONAMI’s support page warns that “depending on the timing of the dropped connection, the server may not have received all of your game progress.” It also says that, for the server-stored data covered by that page, the same PlayStation Network or Xbox Live ID is needed to access it; a different ID yields different server-stored data. Those details apply to KONAMI’s stated service, not to every game.

A shutdown export is game-specific
PixARK publisher Snail Games announced a limited download window for saves from retired legacy servers. The notice offered an August 3 snapshot and an August 24 final snapshot, and said some buildings were absent from the later snapshot after player transfers and dismantling. It stated that downloaded files could be used in local single-player or a privately hosted server. The notice’s download deadline—September 24, 2026, Beijing Time—has passed. This example shows why snapshot dates, omissions, and deadlines matter; it does not mean another game will offer the same option.

Search the game publisher’s official support site and shutdown announcement for the title name plus terms such as “save data,” “cloud save,” “transfer,” “export,” “server closure,” or “offline.” Square Enix’s support guidance on continuing after switching devices, for example, is specific to the game and situation it covers. Follow the exact title’s instructions, including any account or platform requirements.

Universal save-file paths and console export steps cannot be established for an unspecified game or platform. Use the official documentation for your exact setup, and treat any claimed migration or offline option as unconfirmed unless the publisher documents it.
