Do not simply choose a lower number than a competing game. Evaluate scope, expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer or retention, Early Access status, comparable games, customer feedback, regional purchasing power and your future content plan. Set the base price before scheduling promotions, because price changes and discounts create timing restrictions. Steam’s own guidance treats pricing as a product decision and a long-term sales plan, not a race to the lowest price.
What you are really pricing
A Steam price is a promise about the value of the experience. It affects how players interpret the game before they have played it, how much revenue each sale can generate, how large a discount can be offered later, and whether the audience acquired at launch remains viable for updates or downloadable content (DLC).

Steam’s pricing guidance recommends considering the factors below rather than matching the cheapest visible competitor. The platform does not publish one universally correct indie-game price, and its discount percentages are guidance or policy limits, not proof that any particular price maximizes revenue.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Value signal | Questions to answer before choosing a price | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Scope and playtime | How long is a typical first playthrough? What is the realistic range for different players? | A short, tightly authored game and a large campaign can both be valuable, but customers evaluate the amount and quality of content differently. |
| Replayability | Are there branching outcomes, procedural runs, challenge modes, level editors or meaningful new-game options? | Repeatable content can support a higher perceived value than a one-time linear experience of similar length. |
| Multiplayer and retention | Does the game depend on an active player population, co-op sessions, seasons or regular updates? | A larger launch audience may be strategically useful when continuing participation is part of the product. |
| Production scope | What are the quality, variety, accessibility, localization and support commitments? | Players compare the finished package, not only the number of hours in the main path. |
| Release state | Is this a finished launch, Early Access build or a transition out of Early Access? | Unfinished content and the risk of change alter what customers are buying and how you should communicate value. |
| Future content | Will substantial updates or paid DLC add reasons to keep the base game attractive? | The base-game price and future catalogue should work together rather than competing for the same purchase. |
Use these answers to define a value range before looking at a discount. A low price is not automatically generous: it can reduce the revenue available for updates, imply a smaller or less polished product, and make a later increase harder to explain.

How to research comparable Steam games
Start with genuinely comparable titles, not a list of every game in the same broad genre. Steam advises researching similar games and customer feedback while focusing on customer value rather than undercutting the market. The comparison should reflect the product a buyer is choosing, including genre, content scope, release state and audience expectations.
Build a useful comparison set
- Choose games with a similar core genre and session pattern. A short narrative adventure should not be benchmarked against a 100-hour role-playing game merely because both use the same camera perspective.
- Match scope: campaign size, number of modes, level count, systemic depth, co-op features and update commitments.
- Separate finished releases from Early Access products. Their prices may reflect different content levels, uncertainty and road maps.
- Note whether each title has an established community, a major licence or a catalogue of DLC that your new game does not yet have.
- Record both the normal base price and the way the title is discounted over time. A temporary sale price is not the same product signal as the everyday price.
Read feedback for value objections
Customer reviews reveal which features buyers actually value and which gaps produce refunds or negative recommendations. Look for recurring comments about length, replayability, technical condition, multiplayer population, accessibility and whether the content matches the store description. Do not treat an individual review as a price study; use repeated themes to test whether your planned price is supported by the experience you describe.
Compare the reasons behind prices, not just the numbers. If a competitor costs more because it includes a large co-op ecosystem, matching that price without equivalent retention value may be difficult. Conversely, a compact game with exceptional writing, art or replayability should not be forced into the lowest-priced slot simply because its campaign is shorter.

Choose the intended regular price first. Then map the launch offer and later promotions against that price. Steam does not permit base-price changes during an active or scheduled discount, and a price increase creates a discount cooldown, so changing the number after announcing a sale can disrupt the plan.
A practical base-price worksheet
- Describe the product in one sentence. State the genre, audience, core activity and what makes the experience distinct.
- Estimate the delivered value. Use expected playtime, replayability, multiplayer or retention, production quality and post-launch support—not development cost alone.
- Identify the closest comparisons. Remove games whose scope, audience or release state makes the comparison misleading.
- Read buyer feedback. List the features customers praise and the shortcomings they penalize in those comparable products.
- Choose a regular-price range. Pick the point that makes the value proposition credible while leaving room for later, clearly communicated promotions.
- Check regional entries. Review every supported currency and market before publishing the price.
- Write down the rationale. This record helps the team make consistent decisions when sales data or a planned expansion arrives.
This process deliberately avoids a formula such as “hours multiplied by a fixed amount.” Playtime is one value signal, not a complete measure of quality or willingness to pay.

How to price a Steam game in different countries
Steam supports pricing in 37 currencies. Its conversion tools can use exchange rates, purchasing power, or a multi-variable method that considers local purchasing power, comparable entertainment costs and exchange rates. These are starting aids, not automatic answers: you retain control over the price entered for each currency and region. See Steamworks Pricing for the current interface and guidance.
Review regional prices as markets, not currency math
- Begin with Steam’s suggested conversion method, then inspect the resulting local prices for obvious purchasing-power mismatches.
- Consider the prices of comparable entertainment in that market, not only the current exchange rate.
- Check whether rounding produces a meaningful psychological or affordability difference.
- Review regional restrictions, taxes and local purchasing conventions that affect the final customer price.
- Keep a change log. Exchange rates and platform recommendations can change, so a regional review should be repeated when the product, market or base price changes.
Do not advertise one global equivalent as if it were a promise that every customer pays the same economic amount. A regionally appropriate entry can improve access without making the global base price artificially low.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should you use a launch discount?
A launch discount is optional. Steam generally suggests around 10%–15% when a developer chooses to use one. It can run for 7–14 days, must be configured before release and cannot exceed 40%. These are Steam’s current guidance and limits, not a requirement that every game should discount.
A modest launch offer can reward early buyers and create a clear reason to purchase during the release window. It is most defensible when the regular price remains credible on its own and the discount is part of a planned launch message. A discount chosen only to appear on a popularity list can attract buyers who would not otherwise be a good fit and can make the full price look inflated.
When a launch discount may be unnecessary
- Your audience is already waiting and the game’s value is easy to understand at the regular price.
- You need to learn the sales curve without introducing a temporary price variable.
- The launch build is entering a longer Early Access period in which content and price will evolve.
- You cannot support a launch campaign that explains the end date and the regular price clearly.
Configure it before release
- Finalize the regular price and all regional entries.
- Choose the discount percentage within Steam’s current limit and decide whether the offer should last 7, 14 or another permitted number of days in that range.
- Configure the offer in Steamworks before the release date.
- Confirm the displayed prices in each market and make the end date visible in your launch communications.
- Do not change the base price while the discount is active or scheduled.
Plan discount timing around Steam’s cooldowns
Discount timing is a scheduling constraint, not just a marketing choice. Under Steam’s ordinary rules, a product generally cannot be discounted for 30 days after release, within 30 days of another discount, or for 30 days after a price increase. Seasonal sale discounts are exempt from the ordinary discount-to-discount cooldown, but the release and price-increase cooldowns still matter. Steam also prevents a discount from taking a currency price below its applicable minimum transaction threshold. Verify the current rules and thresholds in Steamworks Discounting before committing dates.

Make a calendar that includes the release date, the end of any launch offer, seasonal events, planned updates, DLC launches, Early Access transitions and any possible base-price change. Leave room for the rules to change and recheck the calendar before submitting each promotion.
Price increases need special care
A higher base price may be justified when the product gains substantial content or leaves Early Access, but the increase itself starts a 30-day discount cooldown under the ordinary rules. Do not announce a sale that depends on a price increase occurring immediately beforehand. If an Early Access transition includes a price change, coordinate the transition date, customer communication and promotion schedule as one plan; current transition guidance is included in Steam’s Pricing FAQ and regional pricing documentation.
Use a gradual discount path instead of a launch-price collapse
Steam recommends stair-stepping discounts over time. Its documentation gives an illustrative progression of 33% → 50% → 66% → 75% and deeper discounts over a year or more. This is an example, not a mandatory schedule or a forecast of revenue. The principle is to let the base price establish value, observe demand, and deepen the offer as the title matures rather than immediately training customers to wait.
A steep discount soon after launch can send a poor signal to full-price customers and undermine perceived value. It can also make later promotions less meaningful. The right progression depends on retention, the age of the title, the size of the active audience, and whether a substantial DLC catalogue gives the base game a strategic role as an entry point.
Build the progression around product events
| Stage | Decision to make | Evidence to review |
|---|---|---|
| Launch | Keep the regular price credible; add an optional modest launch offer. | Conversion, refunds, reviews and the quality of players acquired. |
| Early updates | Use a promotion only when it supports a meaningful update or event. | Sales decay, wishlist activity, engagement and support capacity. |
| Mature title | Consider a deeper offer if the game needs a larger audience or serves as an entry point to DLC. | Retention, DLC ownership, catalogue performance and the health of the community. |
| Long-tail sale | Align the discount with the game’s age and remaining commercial role. | Marginal revenue from new buyers versus the effect on full-price demand and perceived value. |
Measure the sales curve in Steamworks
Use Steamworks Sales & Activation reporting to observe sales and revenue over time. The useful question is not “Which discount produces the biggest spike?” but “What does each price do to sustainable demand?” Examine the shape of sales after release and after each promotion, then relate it to updates, reviews, seasonal events and changes in visibility.

Signals worth tracking
- Units and revenue at the regular price versus each discounted period.
- How quickly sales decay after launch and after a promotion ends.
- Refund patterns and review sentiment by release phase.
- Whether new players remain active when multiplayer or ongoing content is central to the product.
- Whether buyers of the base game later purchase DLC or complete bundles.
- Regional differences that suggest a price entry needs review rather than a global price cut.
Interpret these reports as decision evidence, not as a universal pricing experiment. A large spike can be valuable if it creates a healthy audience for co-op or DLC, but harmful if it consumes demand that would have arrived at the regular price without improving retention.
A decision framework for choosing the number
Use the following sequence when the team is debating a specific price. It keeps product value, market context and promotion mechanics separate so one concern does not hide another.
- Define the experience. Document scope, expected playthrough, replayability, multiplayer, release state and support commitments.
- Set the audience. Identify who is most likely to buy and what alternatives that audience considers comparable.
- Test the value case. Check whether the store page can clearly explain why the proposed regular price is fair.
- Benchmark comparable products. Compare scope, content, reviews and release state; exclude outliers and temporary sale prices from the regular-price benchmark.
- Choose the regular price. Do this before any launch or seasonal promotion.
- Review all regions. Use Steam’s conversion aids, then adjust entries for local purchasing power and entertainment prices where appropriate.
- Schedule the first offer. Decide whether the optional launch discount helps the launch objective and remains within Steam’s duration and percentage limits.
- Reserve future windows. Apply release, discount and price-increase cooldowns, minimum thresholds and seasonal-sale exceptions to the calendar.
- Define review triggers. Decide what sales decay, retention, DLC performance or content milestone would justify changing the next promotion.
Common pricing mistakes and how to correct them
Undercutting the cheapest competitor
Symptom: The team picks the lowest visible price without checking scope or audience. Correction: Rebuild the comparison set around genuinely similar games and articulate your own value case. Steam explicitly advises focusing on customer value rather than making undercutting the goal.
Using playtime as the only formula
Symptom: A short but polished game is automatically priced below a longer, repetitive one. Correction: Include replayability, craft, accessibility, multiplayer, production quality and post-launch support in the assessment.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Discounting deeply to chase visibility
Symptom: A large early discount is chosen mainly to climb a sales ranking. Correction: Check whether the acquired audience will retain, review and support the product. Steam cautions against early discounts aimed merely at climbing the Top Sellers list.

- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Ignoring regional entries
Symptom: Every market receives a mechanical currency conversion. Correction: Review purchasing power, local entertainment costs and comparable prices, then maintain a record of each regional decision.
Changing the base price after announcing a sale
Symptom: A price increase or decrease collides with an active or scheduled discount. Correction: Finalize the regular price first and recalculate the calendar whenever a price change is proposed.
Treating the illustrative discount ladder as a rule
Symptom: Every game is forced through the same percentages regardless of age, retention or DLC. Correction: Use Steam’s example as a gradual-discount principle, then adjust the pace and depth to the title’s actual commercial role.
Worked scenarios (without pretending there is one correct price)
A compact, finished narrative game
Suppose the game offers a focused campaign with high production quality but limited replayability. Compare it with other compact narrative releases, read feedback about length and presentation, and set a regular price that communicates a premium authored experience. A small launch offer may reduce purchase hesitation, but a deep early cut could imply that the regular price was arbitrary. Later promotions can align with major content updates or seasonal events.
A replayable co-op game
Here, the value case includes repeat sessions and the health of the player population. A price that attracts enough compatible players may support the product better than maximizing the first transaction. Track retention, concurrent participation and the effect of promotions on matchmaking before deciding whether a broader discount is worthwhile. The base game may eventually function as an entry point to substantial DLC, but that strategy only works if the acquired players remain engaged.
An Early Access project
Price the current build honestly, explain what is available now and identify the intended path to the full release. Do not promise that a future price increase or discount will occur unless the schedule is feasible under Steam’s cooldown rules. When content and scope materially change, reassess the value case, regional entries and the timing of any price change together.
What to document before publishing
- The regular base price and the reasoning based on scope, audience and comparable products.
- Every regional price entry and the method used to review it.
- Whether a launch discount will run, its percentage, dates and customer-facing explanation.
- A calendar containing release, discount, seasonal-sale, update, DLC and possible price-change dates.
- The Steamworks rules and minimum thresholds checked on the date of scheduling.
- The sales, revenue, retention and DLC signals that will trigger a future review.
- The person responsible for rechecking prices when exchange rates, platform guidance or the product itself changes.
Steam’s official pages are the authoritative place to verify current policy because thresholds, regional recommendations and interface labels can change: Pricing and Discounting.
