Progress in Last Asylum: Plague by treating Sanctuary upgrades as your account’s main gate, keeping the clinic active, investing in a focused hero squad, and choosing research that supports the systems you use. The right next upgrade depends on your current prerequisites and bottleneck, so check your in-game requirements before spending scarce resources.

How the progression systems fit together

The game casts you as a plague doctor caring for survivors, managing a sanctuary, gathering supplies, and defending against the Rat Swarm. The Google Play listing describes production, residential buildings, warehouses, and territory expansion as part of sanctuary management; the official game site also frames gathering and upgrading as central activities.

Sanctuary sets the pace

Community guides describe Sanctuary as the main progression hub: its levels unlock systems and raise the hero level ceiling. Those guides point to milestones around levels 6, 7, 8, 10, 15, and 20, including access to core systems, the Lab and Raven Nest, additional squads, Alliance Duel, and Raven growth systems. These are third-party guide details, not a guaranteed current unlock chart; check the requirements shown in your own game.

Before beginning a Sanctuary upgrade, inspect its prerequisites and identify any supporting buildings that are behind. The community building-upgrade guide recommends keeping the Lab, Training Grounds, and Alliance Hall current. Its costs and timings are estimates, and later upgrades are described as more demanding, so use the in-game values rather than assuming a guide’s figures still apply.

The clinic supports account growth

The clinic is more than a side activity: a community clinic guide says clinic stars are used in Sanctuary progression. It describes doctor improvements to movement, healing, radius, and carry capacity in a fixed sequence. Since the sequence is not a freely chosen build, keep playing the clinic rather than waiting to devise a custom upgrade order.

Heroes have separate investment tracks

Hero development uses distinct resources and systems. A community hero-upgrade guide describes Antitoxin for levels, hero-specific or omni shards for stars, and Skill Badges for skills. Some skill upgrades require the hero to reach a star threshold.

Concentrate those materials on the heroes you use most instead of spreading them evenly across every unlocked character. A separate community hero guide recommends considering roles and whether a hero serves your PvE or PvP needs; it also identifies equipment as another way to improve heroes. These are strategic recommendations, not an official universal lineup or gear prescription.

Research can compound over time

A community research guide puts development technologies first because they can support construction, research, training, and resource progress, then recommends Alliance Duel technologies and research suited to the player’s heroes or soldiers. That order is a guide’s recommendation, not a rule for every account. Favor technologies that improve the activities you are currently relying on, and account for the trade-offs between branches.

What should you upgrade first?

Use the next Sanctuary level as your planning target, then choose upgrades by their immediate value to your account. A building that clears a prerequisite may be more useful than an attractive but unrelated improvement; a research upgrade that compounds across several queues may be worth prioritizing when you have time to benefit from it.

  • Unlock value: Will the upgrade open a system, event, or squad that changes what you can do?
  • Bottleneck relief: Does it satisfy the next Sanctuary requirement or catch up a lagging clinic, Lab, or support building?
  • Resource and time fit: Can you complete it without leaving important queues or systems neglected?
  • Lineup impact: Will the investment strengthen the heroes or troops you actually use?
  • Compounding benefit: Will the research or building improve multiple later actions?

If you can unlock a meaningful feature without leaving your core squad weak or key support systems behind, advancing Sanctuary is a sensible next move. If supplies, prerequisites, or combat strength are the obstacle, address that specific constraint first rather than pushing the Sanctuary level at any cost.

How to choose your next move

  1. Check the next Sanctuary upgrade. Open its in-game requirements and note the buildings, resources, and other conditions that are actually blocking it.
  2. Identify the binding constraint. If a building or clinic requirement is missing, focus there. If you meet the requirements but lack supplies, build up the systems that produce or gather what you need.
  3. Keep clinic progress moving. Its stars can matter for Sanctuary progression, and doctor improvements follow the cited guide’s fixed sequence.
  4. Strengthen a core lineup when combat is the problem. Use Antitoxin, shards, and Skill Badges on the heroes you rely on, observing star thresholds for skills.
  5. Choose research for your current plan. Development research may support broad account growth; prioritize other branches when their benefits better match your active goals.
  6. Reassess after each major upgrade. New unlocks or requirements can change which system is now holding progress back.

Why your priority changes by account stage

There is no single precise next upgrade for every player: Sanctuary level, unlocked research, clinic stars, hero lineup, and available resources all affect the decision. Community guides identify milestones and recommend upgrade patterns, but their exact costs and calculations may not match your version. Use them as planning aids and treat the current in-game requirements as authoritative for your account.

The Google Play listing showed an update date of September 8, 2026, and game mechanics or community calculations can change. Confirm current unlock conditions and costs in-game before committing resources.
