Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Protect your Discord account by treating unexpected invites, bot messages, and reward offers as untrusted until you verify them independently. A familiar username or profile is not proof: a friend’s account could be compromised. Before joining a server, review the invite and its privacy options; then strengthen sign-in with a passkey or security key, or an authenticator app. If you already clicked a suspicious link or entered your password, go to Discord through a trusted route and secure the account immediately.
How can you tell if a Discord invite or message is suspicious?
Look at what the message asks you to do, not just who appears to have sent it. Discord warns that compromised accounts can send links that seem to come from someone you know. Treat an unexpected link as untrusted even when the sender is familiar; verify the message through another channel before acting. Discord’s safer-shopping guidance warns against links from untrusted sources.

Common phishing lures
- Free rewards or Nitro: Be cautious of unsolicited offers that require you to click a link, sign in, share personal information, or provide payment details.
- Urgent threats: A message warning that your account will be suspended or otherwise harmed unless you act immediately is a reason to pause and verify.
- Bot DMs: Do not follow a bot’s link or add a suspicious bot to your server to claim a reward. Discord Trust & Safety warns against bot DMs that offer something or ask you to click a link, and says suspicious bots should be reported. Discord’s guidance on scam and phishing bots explains the risk.
Never enter your Discord credentials on a page reached through an unsolicited message. Instead, open Discord using your usual app or a trusted bookmark and check the account there.

Review the invite and destination
If you did not expect the invite, ask the sender about it through a separate, trusted channel. Do not assume an invite is safe because it arrived in a direct message from a friend. If the message promises a reward or pressures you to act, close it rather than following its link.

Choose your DM privacy setting in the join flow
Discord’s invite flow lets you adjust whether members of the server can send you direct messages before you accept the invite. Review that option and turn off DMs from server members if you do not want that avenue of contact. This setting limits unwanted messages; it does not verify that the invite is genuine or make the server safe.
Use Discord’s message-safety controls
Discord’s Safer Direct Messaging feature, under User Settings > Privacy & Safety, scans DMs from non-friends for harmful content. Treat it as an additional safety aid, not a guarantee that a message or link is harmless.

How should you secure your Discord sign-in?
Use a unique, strong password and enable multi-factor authentication (MFA). Discord supports security keys and passkeys, authenticator apps, and SMS. Its MFA guidance recommends security keys; it describes passkeys and security keys as phishing-resistant and lists enrollment at User Settings > Account > Security Keys. Discord says users can register up to 16 security keys or passkeys at once. Discord’s MFA setup instructions cover the available methods.

| Sign-in method | What to know | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Security key or passkey | Discord recommends security keys and describes passkeys/security keys as phishing-resistant. | Set one up in Discord’s Security Keys settings. Keep recovery codes in case you lose access to your sign-in device. |
| Authenticator app | Supported by Discord as an MFA option. | Protect access to the device or app holding your codes, and store Discord’s backup codes separately and securely. |
| SMS | Supported, but Discord warns that messages can be intercepted and phone numbers can be affected by SIM swaps; it characterizes SMS MFA as better than no MFA, but not by much. | Prefer a security key/passkey or authenticator app when available. |
Whichever method you choose, save Discord’s backup codes somewhere secure. They are one-time recovery codes, and Discord says its support team cannot remove MFA from an account. A password manager can be one place to protect backup codes; Discord also says passkeys can be stored in a password manager. Discord’s backup-code instructions explain how to use them.

What should you do if you clicked a phishing link or entered your credentials?
Act from a trusted route: open Discord directly rather than returning to the suspicious message or link. If you entered your password, assume it may be exposed and work through these steps promptly.
