Protect your PlayStation Network account with a passkey if your devices support one, or enable 2-step verification (2SV) and save its backup codes. Use a unique PSN password, secure the email account linked to PSN, and treat unexpected messages, login links, and QR codes as potential scams. If account details change without your permission, use PlayStation’s official recovery or support route promptly.
Choose a secure sign-in method
PlayStation recommends using a passkey. If your device does not support passkeys, its guidance is to use password sign-in with 2-step verification. Availability and menus can vary, so follow the current instructions in PlayStation’s passkey guide or its 2-step verification guide.

Set up 2-step verification and keep recovery codes safe
For password-based sign-in, open Account Management, go to Security, and follow the current 2SV setup instructions. PlayStation’s support guidance documents 10 backup codes, each usable once. Keep them private in a secure place you can reach if your phone is lost; do not share them with anyone.
If you use 2SV and a code does not arrive, try resending it, restarting your phone, and checking airplane mode and mobile signal. If the problem continues, contact PlayStation Support. If your phone is unavailable, use a saved one-time backup code; if neither your phone nor backup codes are available, contact support.

Make your PSN password and linked email harder to take over
- Use a different password for PSN and every other account. A password manager can generate and store distinct passwords.
- Secure the email account linked to PSN with its own strong, unique password. Email access may let someone reset other service passwords, view sensitive information, or impersonate you.
- Never share sign-in details or verification codes. PlayStation Support’s advice is direct: “Never share your account details with anyone else.”
Recognize PSN-themed phishing attempts
Scams may arrive as unexpected messages from players or through social media. A message might promise a beta or tournament invitation, claim your account was mistakenly reported and offer to restore it, or say you must sign in through a supplied link to fix a problem. Other lures include QR codes supposedly offering vouchers, gift cards, in-game items, or exclusive rewards, and websites promising free virtual currency in exchange for personal information.
- Do not enter your PSN credentials on a page reached through an unsolicited message.
- Do not scan a QR code sent by a stranger or an unexpected contact. Scan only codes from official PlayStation channels or a source you already trust.
- Do not accept an offer to “recover” your account by handing over credentials or codes.
- If a message claims there is a problem, go to PlayStation through a route you already know and check the account there rather than using the message’s link.
Reduce risk on shared devices and protect purchases
PlayStation advises against signing in at internet cafés, libraries, or on public PlayStation consoles. If you must use a shared device, sign out when you finish; PlayStation also provides a remote sign-out option in its account security guidance. A console login passcode can prevent someone who does not know it from logging in on that console.

You can also enable password protection for PlayStation Store checkout. PlayStation says this checkout safeguard is not compatible with accounts using passkeys, and it is not a replacement for secure sign-in or careful handling of links and messages.

What to do if you suspect account theft
An account-change email arrives unexpectedly
If you receive an unexpected email about a change to your PlayStation account, PlayStation recommends changing your email-account password first, then following its account-recovery steps. If you cannot change the sign-in method, contact PlayStation Support. If the email account itself may be compromised, secure it as well.

Your sign-in ID, online ID, or password changed
If you see an unfamiliar sign-in ID, online ID, or password change, use PlayStation’s official compromised-account guidance and Online Assistant. The account recovery page also directs you to the Online Assistant if you cannot access the account email or receive a verification or reset message. Avoid outside recovery offers; use PlayStation Support’s official recovery route.
A console was stolen or you see unrecognized payments
For a stolen console, PlayStation’s compromised-account guidance recommends signing out on all devices, deactivating consoles, and considering removal of payment methods. If payments appear that you do not recognize, check your transaction history and follow PlayStation’s official support and refund guidance.

You cannot receive a 2SV code
Try the code-delivery checks above. If you cannot use your phone, enter a saved one-time backup code. If you have neither, contact PlayStation Support rather than giving account information to someone claiming they can bypass verification.
