Counter a reworked Overwatch hero by identifying what changed, watching for the cues that signal an engagement, and adjusting your positioning and team response to the openings the new kit creates. There is no responsible universal counter or current matchup chart without a named hero, patch, and mode: the right answer depends on what the hero can do, what the target can do in response, and whether teammates can follow up.
Start by identifying what the rework changed
Check the live patch notes and the hero’s in-game ability descriptions. Pin down whether the change affects an ability, the hero’s role, how they enter a fight, how they escape, or how they help teammates. Do not assume a rework simply makes the hero better at the job they had before; a role or engagement-pattern change can alter where they are dangerous and how your team should respond.

Also distinguish a live balance change from a limited-time experiment. Blizzard described its Reign of Talon hero changes as limited-time experiments and “more of a conversation than a balance patch,” with an announced window of June 30–July 13. An experimental change is not evidence that the same kit is live in your current match. Check Blizzard’s official Overwatch news and patch notes and confirm the in-game description for the season and mode you are playing.

Read what the hero needs to start a successful fight
Before changing heroes, work out what the reworked hero needs to create value in the specific matchup. Look for dependence on a sightline, close range, a flank route, an isolated target, or a combination of abilities. Then watch for the cue that tells you the engagement is beginning: a visible approach, a sound or animation, a resource being spent, or a predictable route into your team. Which cues matter depends on the hero and the current version of the kit.

Blizzard’s Sombra rework discussion offers a useful design example, not a current counter guide: it said hero impact should be legible enough to inform enemy counterplay, and described changes to Translocator and Stealth intended to allow quicker combat maneuvers while giving enemies more opportunities to react. The practical lesson is to look for the new commitment window and response opportunity rather than relying on old assumptions about how the hero escapes or initiates. Read Blizzard’s Sombra rework discussion.
Position to reduce the value of the engagement
Use cover, distance, alternate angles, and teammate proximity to make the hero work harder for the engagement they want. If the threat relies on close range, avoid giving them an uncontested approach; if it relies on a narrow sightline or flank, consider whether another angle or safer route denies that setup. These are matchup questions, not blanket rules to stand together or spread out: your spacing must also account for the other team’s threats.

Tank players should track whether their position preserves room to disengage or peel for an ally. Blizzard describes tank objectives broadly as making space, initiating engagements, and peeling; a tank response that protects one teammate but leaves the rest of the team unable to reposition may not solve the fight. Its beta-era Doomfist and Orisa overhaul discussion illustrates how a role change and new forward-engagement tools can change positioning needs, but those historic ability details are not current recommendations. See Blizzard’s tank and overhaul discussion.
Compare matchups by what happens during and after contact
A matchup is not just a question of who wins a clean duel. Ask what each option can do during the key engagement, what it costs, and whether it can help the threatened teammate. Blizzard made this conditionality explicit in its January 24, 2023 Roadhog notes: hook effectiveness would depend on the particular hero matchup and on how the hooked target responded. That statement supports evaluating interactions case by case; it is not a current assessment of Roadhog or a recommendation to pick a particular counter. Read Blizzard’s January 24, 2023 patch notes.

- Interruption or survival: Can the response interrupt the key action, or survive it long enough for help to arrive?
- Range and cover: Can it engage from a safer distance or use cover without abandoning its job?
- Commitment and escape: After spending mobility or another key ability, can it retreat or remain useful?
- Timing and availability: Is the relevant response ready when the reworked hero commits, or is it likely to be unavailable?
- Team protection: Does the option protect the teammate under pressure, or only improve one player’s duel?
Use these as comparison questions, not as an official Blizzard ranking. If two responses appear viable, prefer the one your team can execute consistently with its current positions and available abilities.
Coordinate around commitment and follow-up
Make the response specific: identify which ability or approach the team is watching, who can peel for the likely target, and when teammates can follow up after the hero commits. Avoid asking one player to solve the matchup alone if the answer depends on a teammate interrupting, protecting, or finishing the response.

Reassess after the fight. A hero choice can make sense on paper and still fail if your team cannot support its range, positioning, or timing. Blizzard’s Orisa rework discussion described a new ultimate as creating a moment for the team to coordinate quickly. Treat that as an example of team timing mattering, not as a current description of Orisa’s abilities. Read Blizzard’s Orisa rework discussion.
Use hero examples as dated context, not a current counter list
Past reworks and patch notes can illustrate the kinds of questions to ask, but they do not establish what is strongest in the live game now.

- Doomfist and Orisa: Blizzard’s beta-era overhaul article showed how a role transition and changed engagement tools can alter positioning and team responsibilities. Its historic kit details are not live matchup advice.
- Roadhog: The January 24, 2023 notes are a dated example of why the target’s response can affect an interaction. They do not establish today’s hook matchup outcomes.
- Sombra and counter-swapping: October 2024 notes recorded Sombra changes and a scoreboard change that added friction to counter-swapping. This is historical context, not proof of current rules or a current recommendation. Check Blizzard’s official patch notes for dated changes.
Verify advice against the version you are playing
Hero abilities and balance can change, and a live match’s mode matters. Any specific hero-versus-hero recommendation should name its season or patch and be checked against current official notes and the in-game ability descriptions. Without a named hero, mode, and version, a universal counter chart would be misleading; use the method above to identify the threat, deny its preferred setup, and coordinate a response that your team can actually make.
