Use MySQL’s mysql command-line client. Start it with the server host, port, account, password prompt, and (optionally) a default database, then enter SQL at the mysql> prompt. For a single statement or a repeatable job, use --execute, batch mode, a saved .sql file, or a shell pipe instead.

What you need before running a query
The command-line client connects to a MySQL Server; it is not itself the database server. Have these connection details ready:

mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE
-h selects the host, -P selects the TCP port, -u selects the account, and -p with no value tells the client to prompt for the password. If your server uses the default host or port, you can omit those options:
mysql -u USER -p DATABASE
After successful authentication, the client displays the mysql> prompt. The database named at the end becomes the default database for that session. If you omit it, connect first and select a schema with:
USE database_name;
A database name containing spaces or characters significant to your shell may need shell quoting. SQL identifiers with special characters must follow MySQL’s identifier rules; do not confuse shell quoting with SQL quoting.
Enter a SELECT statement
At the prompt, type SQL and finish the statement with a semicolon:
SELECT id, email
FROM users
LIMIT 20;
The client sends the statement when it sees the terminating ;. You may spread a statement over several lines; the prompt changes while the client is waiting for the terminator. A missing semicolon leaves the statement open rather than executing a partial query.
Use metadata commands when you need to discover a schema before querying it:
SHOW TABLES;
DESCRIBE users;
These are ordinary statements entered at the same prompt. Your account still needs the privileges required for the database objects you inspect or read.
Leave the client
Exit an interactive session with either command:
exit
quit
You can also end the client with your terminal’s end-of-input control. The exact key combination depends on your shell and operating system.

Run one query and quit with --execute
For a one-off query, pass the SQL to --execute (short form -e):
mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --execute='SELECT id, email FROM users LIMIT 20;'
The client runs the supplied statement and quits, as described in the MySQL client options reference. This is useful for a quick check, a command in a deployment script, or a query whose output you want to redirect.
Quote the SQL for your shell. The example uses single quotes so the shell passes the semicolon and spaces to MySQL as one argument. If your SQL itself contains a single quote, use a shell-appropriate quoting strategy rather than removing the SQL quote. Test the resulting command with a harmless SELECT before using a statement that changes data.
You can select several statements in one execution string when the client and server configuration allow them, but keeping one logical operation per invocation makes failures and logging easier to interpret. Never put a literal password after -p; the security implications are covered below.
Run a saved .sql file
Redirect the file into the client
Save repeatable SQL in a file such as query.sql, then redirect standard input:
mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE --batch < query.sql
The shell opens the file and the client reads its statements in order. Include a semicolon after each statement that should execute. A file can contain comments and multiple SQL statements, subject to the client and server rules that apply to your statements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy add --batch?
The manual defines batch mode as tab-separated output with one row per line, and says it does not use the history file. That makes the result easier to capture in a script than the human-oriented interactive display:
mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --batch < query.sql > results.tsv
The output is still text. If a column value contains tabs or line breaks, downstream parsing must account for those characters. Choose a delimiter-aware parser when the output is feeding another program; do not assume every value is a simple, unquoted field.

Pipe generated SQL
A shell pipeline can feed SQL without creating a permanent file:
printf 'SELECT COUNT(*) FROM users;n' | mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --batch
This pattern is convenient when another command generates a small, controlled statement. Treat generated SQL as code: constrain its inputs, review the final string, and keep credentials out of the pipeline text. For a substantial or reviewed script, a version-controlled .sql file is easier to inspect and rerun.

| Mode | Typical command | Best use | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interactive | mysql -h HOST -P 3306 -u USER -p DATABASE |
Exploring a schema, trying queries, and inspecting results immediately | Fast experimentation, but manual steps are harder to reproduce and capture consistently |
| One-off execution | mysql ... --execute='SELECT ...;' |
A single check, health query, or shell step | Repeatable invocation; shell quoting and command-history exposure require care |
| Batch file | mysql ... --batch < query.sql |
Scheduled or reviewed SQL, migrations, and data extracts | Repeatable and script-friendly; you must manage file contents, ordering, and errors |
| Pipeline input | producer | mysql ... --batch |
Short, programmatically generated statements | No intermediate file, but debugging and auditing the generated SQL can be harder |
The client options reference describes --execute and --batch behavior in detail: mysql Client Options.
Keep passwords and connection details safe
Do not write a password directly in a command such as -pMySecret. The MySQL manual states: “Specifying a password on the command line should be considered insecure.” A literal can be exposed through shell history, process listings, copied terminal output, shared scripts, or job logs. The warning appears in Account User Names and Passwords.
Use the password prompt
Use -p by itself:
mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE
The client asks for the password interactively without putting the value in the command text. Do not echo or paste it into a command that your shell will save.
Use an option file or login path for unattended work
For scripts that cannot stop for an interactive prompt, use the option-file or login-path mechanisms documented by MySQL instead of embedding a secret in the command line. Start with the account guidance in Account User Names and Passwords and the connection-option reference. Protect any credential file with operating-system permissions, keep it out of source control, and use the least-privileged account that can perform the job.

Batch output
Batch mode emits tab-separated rows with each row on a new line and avoids the history file. Redirect it when another tool needs to consume the result:
mysql -h HOST -u USER -p DATABASE --batch
--execute='SELECT id, email FROM users LIMIT 20;'
> users.tsv
Keep the connection and query visible in the script that produces the file, but keep the password out of both. Record the database, host, query purpose, and run time in your job’s secure logging system if auditability matters; do not log secrets.

A successful connection does not guarantee that every query will work. The account may lack permission for a database, table, view, or operation. The default database only sets name resolution; it does not grant access.
- Confirm the database name and table names before running a large query.
- Use a narrow
SELECTlist instead ofSELECT *when you know the columns you need. - Add a restrictive
WHEREclause and a smallLIMITwhile exploring unfamiliar data. - Run potentially expensive statements against an appropriate environment and account.
- Treat
INSERT,UPDATE,DELETE, and schema-changing statements as production changes, not experiments.
There is no universal command-line performance figure: execution time depends on the schema, indexes, privileges, server configuration, and data volume. A fast client invocation cannot compensate for an unsuitable query plan or an overloaded server.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Diagnose common connection failures
“Can’t connect” or a timeout
Check the host and port first. An omitted -h targets localhost, which is not the same as a remote database. An omitted -P uses port 3306. Verify that the server is listening on the address and port you supplied, that network access permits the connection, and that the account is allowed to connect from your client host.
Use the explicit form while troubleshooting so there is no ambiguity:
mysql -h db.example.test -P 3306 -u app_reader -p appdb
The connection-option documentation lists the host, port, protocol, and related client settings: Command Options for Connecting to the Server.
“Access denied”
An access-denied error usually means the server received the connection but rejected the account, password, or account host match. Re-enter the password at the prompt, confirm the username exactly, and ask a MySQL administrator to verify the account’s permitted host and privileges. Do not “fix” the error by adding a password to the command line.

The client appears to wait forever
At an interactive prompt, a statement without its terminating semicolon is still being collected. Add ; on its own line or finish the SQL statement. In a redirected file, inspect the preceding statement for an unmatched quote or comment that causes later text to be interpreted as part of it.
“Unknown database” or “table doesn’t exist”
Check the spelling and case of the database and table names, and verify which schema is active:
SELECT DATABASE();
SHOW TABLES;
If you connected without a database, run USE database_name; before an unqualified table reference. If the object exists but remains inaccessible, request the minimum required privilege rather than switching to a more powerful account.
Results are difficult to parse
Use --batch for tab-separated rows and redirect output to a file. Remember that tabs and newlines can also occur inside data values. Define an output contract for the consuming program and test it with representative rows, including empty and multiline values.
A repeatable workflow for terminal queries
- Identify the target. Write down the host, port, account, and database. Confirm that the account is intended for read-only exploration or for a controlled change.
- Connect securely. Start with
-pwithout a password value, or use a protected MySQL option or login path for an unattended task. - Verify context. In an interactive session, run
SELECT DATABASE();and, if needed,SHOW TABLES;. - Probe with a small read. Select only the columns you need and use a modest
LIMITwhile checking names, types, and values. - Choose an execution mode. Keep exploration interactive; move a query that must be rerun into
query.sql,--execute, or a controlled pipeline. - Capture output deliberately. Use interactive formatting for a person, or
--batchand redirection for downstream processing. - Review before changing data. Read every predicate and target table in a modifying statement, verify the intended environment, and use the account with the narrowest necessary privileges.
- Record the reusable command. Keep SQL and operational notes in a secured, reviewable location while excluding passwords and other secrets.
Practical command examples
Inspect a table interactively
mysql -h db.example.test -P 3306 -u analyst -p reporting
mysql> DESCRIBE orders;
mysql> SELECT order_id, customer_id, total
-> FROM orders
-> WHERE order_date >= '2026-01-01'
-> LIMIT 20;
The continuation prompt shown above indicates that the client is still collecting the same statement until the semicolon is entered.
Run a one-off count
mysql -h db.example.test -u analyst -p reporting
--execute='SELECT COUNT(*) AS order_count FROM orders;'
This invocation terminates after printing the result.

Export a small result for another command
mysql -h db.example.test -u analyst -p reporting --batch
--execute='SELECT order_id, total FROM orders WHERE total > 100;'
> high_value_orders.tsv
Review the file’s delimiter and data-escaping requirements before importing it into another system.
Run a reviewed SQL file
mysql -h db.example.test -P 3306 -u deploy_reader -p reporting --batch < query.sql
Keep the file’s statements ordered, terminate each one, and test the script against a suitable non-production database before scheduling it against live data.
What the command line can and cannot solve
The mysql client gives you a consistent way to connect, submit SQL, and capture results. It does not decide whether a query is logically correct, whether an account should have access, or whether a statement is safe for a particular dataset. Those decisions depend on the schema, indexes, privileges, server configuration, and volume of data.
Use interactive mode to learn the shape of the data, then promote a proven query to --execute or a batch file when repeatability matters. Keep credentials out of command text, use explicit connection details when diagnosing problems, and choose tab-separated batch output only when the consumer can handle the data it receives.
