To redirect blog.example.com to example.com, configure both DNS and HTTP. DNS must send the old hostname to infrastructure that can answer requests; that infrastructure must then return a permanent server-side redirect, normally HTTP 301 or 308, to the matching URL on the main domain. DNS records alone cannot issue an HTTP redirect.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
A safe migration preserves equivalent paths and, where appropriate, query strings. A request for blog.example.com/guides/setup should reach its mapped destination, such as https://example.com/guides/setup, rather than sending every article to the homepage. The old hostname, its certificate, and its redirects should remain available while users and search engines discover the new URLs.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat actually happens when a subdomain redirects
A browser performs several separate operations when it follows a redirect:
- DNS lookup: The resolver asks where
blog.example.comis hosted. An A, AAAA, or CNAME record supplies that destination. - TLS negotiation: For an HTTPS request, the old hostname must present a certificate valid for
blog.example.com. If the certificate fails, the request cannot reach the redirect response. - HTTP response: The web server, CDN, or hosting platform returns a 301 or 308 response with a
Locationheader pointing to the new URL. - Second request: The browser requests the destination URL and receives the page from the main domain.
This separation explains why adding a DNS record and waiting does not, by itself, move a blog. DNS only resolves a name; an HTTP service must still be configured to send the redirect.

Choose the destination before changing DNS
Redirect work is primarily a URL-mapping project. Make the map before enabling rules so that every important article has a deliberate destination.
Inventory the old subdomain
Export the blog’s live URLs from its content system, server logs, analytics reports, and XML sitemap. Include more than article pages:
- Article URLs and pagination pages
- RSS or Atom feeds
- Author, category, tag, and archive pages that still receive traffic
- Images, downloadable files, and other assets that may be linked externally
- HTTP and HTTPS variants
- Trailing-slash and non-trailing-slash forms where both have existed
- Important query-string variants, such as campaign parameters or search filters
Record the response status and final destination for representative URLs. This list becomes your test set and gives you a way to find old links that were missed by a broad redirect rule.
Build a one-to-one map where possible
For each old URL, choose the most equivalent new URL. If an article moved from /post-name to /blog/post-name, map it directly. If its slug changed, map the old slug to the new slug. Google recommends mapping old URLs to relevant new pages rather than redirecting unrelated URLs to the homepage.
Use a homepage redirect only when no meaningful replacement exists and the homepage genuinely explains the move. For a deleted article with no substitute, a correctly handled 404 or 410 can be more honest than sending visitors to an unrelated page.
Decide how query strings should behave
Campaign parameters such as > are normally retained so analytics attribution survives. Tracking or technical parameters that have no value on the new site can be removed deliberately, but do not discard useful parameters accidentally. Test a representative URL with its full query string before applying a global rule.
Method 1: Redirect at a DNS and CDN provider
A provider with an edge redirect feature can handle the old hostname without keeping a full blog application online. Cloudflare’s documented pattern is to create a proxied DNS A record for the subdomain and then add a Single Redirect rule.
Configure the hostname
- Open the DNS settings for the zone containing
example.com. - Create or retain a record for
blog. The record may be an A, AAAA, or CNAME appropriate to the provider’s setup. - Enable proxying if the provider’s redirect rules require traffic to pass through its edge network. A DNS-only record sends requests directly to the origin instead.
- Confirm that the old hostname is included in the provider’s certificate coverage. With Cloudflare proxying, Universal SSL covers first-level subdomains; with DNS-only hosting, the origin server must provide a valid certificate itself.
Do not delete the record after creating the rule. The hostname must continue resolving for the redirect to work.

Create a path-preserving Single Redirect
Set the source to the old host and configure a dynamic destination that combines the new origin with the incoming path. Cloudflare’s example uses:
concat("https://example.com", http.request.uri.path)
Select status code 301 for a permanent move. If your rule interface offers an explicit query-string-preservation option, enable it when the destination accepts those parameters. Cloudflare redirect rules document path and query-string handling separately, so verify the resulting rule rather than assuming the defaults.

When a single rule is not enough
A host-wide rule works when the path structure is unchanged. Use a set of specific rules or an edge-worker-style mapping when sections moved to different folders. Put specific article mappings before a broad catch-all rule so the catch-all cannot intercept them first. Keep a written table of exceptions; it is easier to audit than a long expression containing undocumented special cases.
Method 2: Apache on the origin server
Use an Apache virtual host or .htaccess when the old subdomain still points to a server you control. The redirect must match the old host, not every domain served by that server.
Host-wide redirect with the original path
Enable the rewrite module and place a host-specific rule in the old subdomain’s virtual-host configuration or its document-root .htaccess file:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://example.com/$1 [R=301,L]
Apache’s documented permanent-redirect pattern uses the [R=301,L] flags. The R=301 flag sends a permanent response, while L stops later rewrite rules from processing that request. Test whether your configuration already supplies a leading slash; if it does, adjust the substitution to avoid producing a double slash.

RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^blog.example.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://example.com/blog/$1 [R=301,L]
Place article-specific rules above this general rule. For example, a legacy slug can be mapped directly before the folder-wide fallback. Keep the old host’s HTTPS virtual host configured as well as its HTTP virtual host; otherwise HTTPS visitors may receive a certificate or connection error before Apache can redirect them.
Method 3: Nginx server block
On Nginx, create a server block whose server_name is the old hostname. A simple path-preserving redirect is:

listen 80;
server_name blog.example.com;
return 301 https://example.com$request_uri;
}
$request_uri contains the path and query string supplied by the client, so the example preserves both. Configure an equivalent TLS server block on port 443 with a certificate valid for blog.example.com:
server {
listen 443 ssl;
server_name blog.example.com;
ssl_certificate /path/to/blog.example.com/fullchain.pem;
ssl_certificate_key /path/to/blog.example.com/privkey.pem;
return 301 https://example.com$request_uri;
}
Use the certificate paths and TLS settings required by your host. Validate the Nginx configuration before reloading it, and check that no earlier server block captures the old hostname.
Redirecting into a new folder
If every old article now lives below /blog/, construct the destination from the URI path rather than forwarding it unchanged. Because Nginx variables differ by context, test the exact result with a URL containing a query string. For irregular moves, use individual location rules ahead of the general host redirect.
Method 4: Hosting-panel forwarding
Managed hosting panels often provide a “Redirect,” “URL forwarding,” or similarly named feature. This is convenient when you cannot edit Apache or Nginx configuration, but capabilities vary.
- Confirm that the panel can match the complete old hostname, not only a path on the primary site.
- Choose a permanent redirect option rather than a temporary forwarding mode.
- Check whether paths are preserved. Some panels forward every request to one URL unless a “wildcard” or “retain path” option is enabled.
- Check query-string behavior separately; forwarding the path does not guarantee that parameters are retained.
- Verify HTTPS support and certificate coverage for the old hostname.
- Ask whether the panel creates separate HTTP and HTTPS rules. Test both after publishing.
If the panel cannot preserve paths or handle exceptions, use a server-level or edge-level rule instead. A technically successful redirect that erases every article path creates a poor migration.
Make HTTPS work before testing redirects
The redirect cannot help an HTTPS visitor if the old hostname fails TLS first. Install or retain a certificate covering blog.example.com and configure the certificate on the endpoint that receives the request.

When the DNS record is proxied through Cloudflare, its Universal SSL service covers first-level subdomains according to Cloudflare’s documentation. When the record is DNS-only, the origin server must serve the certificate. A certificate for example.com is not automatically valid for blog.example.com unless it includes the subdomain through a suitable SAN or wildcard name.
Test certificate validity from an ordinary browser and an HTTP client. Check expiration, hostname matching, and the complete certificate chain. Do not disable certificate verification merely to make a test appear successful.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Choose 301 or 308 for a permanent move
Use a server-side 301 or 308 when the hostname change is intended to last. Google identifies both as permanent redirects and recommends a permanent server-side redirect when a page’s search URL has changed. A 301 is the most widely supported choice; a 308 also communicates permanence while requiring the client to preserve the HTTP method. For ordinary blog links, either can express a permanent move, but use one consistently across the migration.
Avoid chains such as blog.example.com to http://example.com to https://example.com. Redirect directly to the final HTTPS URL. Chains add requests, complicate troubleshooting, and can prevent some clients or crawlers from reaching the intended page.
Update the site’s signals after the redirect
Redirects handle incoming requests, but the site itself should stop advertising the old host.
- Change internal links to the new host and final paths.
- Regenerate XML sitemaps with only the new URLs.
- Update canonical tags so each page names its final main-domain URL.
- Replace old-host URLs in structured data, Open Graph fields, feeds, and downloadable documents.
- Update analytics property settings, referral filters, conversion definitions, and campaign templates where the old hostname was explicitly listed.
- Review robots directives and security policies that mention the old host.
- Notify important partners or publishers that link to the blog if you control those references.
Keep the old host redirecting while search engines recrawl it and while users follow older bookmarks. Do not remove DNS or certificates immediately after the first successful test.

Test the migration systematically
Use an HTTP header tool, command-line client, or browser developer tools to inspect each hop. A successful test should show one intended 301 or 308 followed by the final HTTPS response.
Core request matrix
http://blog.example.com/https://blog.example.com/- The bare subdomain and any commonly used aliases that were publicly linked
- A representative article with its original path
- An article whose slug changed and therefore needs an exception rule
- A path with and without a trailing slash
- A URL containing a campaign or search query string
- A feed, image, download, or other asset that should be redirected or deliberately retired
- The final main-domain URL over HTTPS
What to verify in each response
- The old hostname resolves to the intended edge or origin service.
- The TLS certificate is valid for the old hostname.
- The status is 301 or 308 for a permanent move.
- The
Locationheader contains the correct host, path, and intended query string. - The destination returns the expected content status, normally 200 for a live page.
- No redirect loop occurs between HTTP and HTTPS, old and new hosts, or slash variants.
- No unnecessary intermediate hop appears.
Common failures and fixes
DNS resolves, but no redirect appears
The record may point directly to an origin that still serves the old site, or the edge rule may require proxying. Confirm the record target, proxy status, and the host-specific server configuration.

HTTPS reports a certificate error
Install a certificate for the old hostname on the receiving endpoint, or enable the provider’s certificate coverage where appropriate. Fix TLS before judging the redirect rule.
Every URL lands on the homepage
The forwarding feature is dropping the path, or a broad rule is running before article-specific mappings. Enable path preservation and move exceptions ahead of the catch-all.
Recommended Free Tools
Query parameters disappear
Inspect the provider’s query-string setting or the server substitution. Test with a known parameter and decide explicitly which parameters should survive.
A redirect loop occurs
Check whether the edge proxy connects to the origin over a protocol that causes the origin to redirect back to the edge, or whether the destination rule also matches the new hostname. Restrict the rule to the old host and make the final URL the canonical HTTPS address.
Some old URLs return 404
The URL was not included in the inventory, its path differs from the assumed pattern, or an exception rule is ordered incorrectly. Add a direct mapping for the missing URL and retest related variants.
Timing, monitoring, and retirement
There is no universal DNS-propagation or ranking-retention duration. Timing depends on record TTLs, resolver and browser caches, CDN caches, certificate issuance, server configuration, and each search engine’s crawl schedule. Plan for overlap rather than a fixed deadline.
Monitor requests to the old hostname after launch. Group 404s and unexpected destinations by path so you can add missing mappings. Watch server logs, analytics referrals, crawl reports, and support requests for evidence that users are still reaching legacy URLs.
Retire the old application only after the redirect endpoint, DNS record, certificate, and required mappings have been stable for the period appropriate to your audience and traffic. Removing any one of those pieces can turn a working migration into a connection error or an unresolvable hostname.

Practical launch checklist
- Old URLs and important variants are inventoried.
- Each valuable URL has a relevant destination or an intentional retirement status.
- The old DNS record remains active.
- The old hostname has a valid HTTPS certificate.
- The redirect returns one direct 301 or 308 to the final HTTPS URL.
- Paths, trailing slashes, and approved query strings behave as planned.
- Internal links, sitemaps, canonicals, structured data, feeds, and analytics settings use the new host.
- Representative HTTP, HTTPS, article, asset, and exception URLs have been tested.
- Logs and crawl reports are being monitored for missed mappings.
The Bottom Line
Keep DNS pointed at a service that can answer for the old subdomain, make HTTPS valid there, and return a direct 301 or 308 that preserves each URL’s relevant path and query string. Update the site’s own signals, test every important variant, and leave the old hostname redirecting until traffic and crawling have moved.
