To climb Mount Fay, enter through The Slab from Choral Chambers, then head west from The Slab’s Bellway. Clawline is required for the documented ascent. The cold builds while you are away from warmth, so move from lamp to lamp, use benches as checkpoints, and avoid icy water. At the summit, play the Needolin beside the tuning fork to earn the Faydown Cloak and its double jump.
Reach Mount Fay through The Slab
- From Choral Chambers, take the route toward The Slab through its left or middle-left side.
- Use The Slab’s Bellway to reach the mountain approach, then travel west into Mount Fay.
- Have Clawline for the documented climb. Its acquisition route can vary with progression: guides describe obtaining it through Underworks or through the Whispering Vaults and Cogwork Core sequence. You do not need to complete both routes.
Exact room sequences can depend on progression and game version; these routes are described by PC Gamer’s Mount Fay guide and the Hollow Knight Wiki area reference.

Prepare for the cold and use checkpoints
Frost builds while Hornet is away from heat. Glowing lamps and warm pockets provide places to recover, so plan each stretch from one source of warmth to the next rather than lingering in exposed areas. Benches also act as checkpoints during the ascent.
- Rest at the first bench you encounter.
- Look for a second bench behind a breakable wall; it is easy to miss if you follow only the obvious route.
- Keep moving between warm spots and use walls, rings, and air currents to help with the climb.
- Stay out of icy water. It can hurt Hornet even after you have collected the summit reward.
A community-maintained Hollow Knight Wiki lists 15 seconds as the normal time to frost over, but this figure is not corroborated by official documentation or patch notes. Treat it as a secondary reference rather than a reliable timer for planning individual jumps: Mount Fay area reference.

Get the map and choose whether to detour
Shakra sells the Mount Fay map for 40 Rosaries, according to the Mount Fay area reference and the Map and Quill reference. Maps update after exploration when you rest with a quill, so having the map does not mean every section will be filled in immediately.
The main goal is the summit; these are optional pickups on the ascent, not prerequisites for the cloak:

- A Spool Fragment near the edge of the route.
- A Memory Crystal.
- A caged Flea.
If you want to collect them, follow the side paths as you encounter them. If your priority is reaching the summit, keep to the climb and return for optional detours later. The pickups are noted in the Mount Fay walkthrough.

At the summit, use the Needolin beside the tuning fork. This grants the Faydown Cloak, which unlocks a double jump and opens up further traversal options. The area reference also says the cloak prevents ambient frostbite; it does not make icy water safe.
