To reach the Windscale Plant in Atomfall, go through the Interchange: restore power in the Data Stores, activate the Central Processor using the Signal Redirector, then follow the passage it opens to the Windscale door. This is the main-story access route; you do not need to complete every optional lead.
Reach Windscale through the Interchange
Windscale is not reached by walking directly across the outdoor map. The main progression route takes you through the Interchange, the underground complex that leads to the plant. Xbox’s overview of the game’s setting identifies the Interchange as the route into Windscale, which is central to the disaster in the story: Xbox Wire’s Atomfall mechanics overview.

Open the route from the Central Processor
- Restore power in the Data Stores. Obtain and install the required atomic batteries there. This supplies the power needed for the next progression step.
- Bring the Signal Redirector to the Central Processor. Use it on the junction boxes beneath the floor at the processor’s open entrances, as described in the TrueAchievements main-playthrough guide.
- Activate the processor. After redirecting the signals at the junction boxes, pull the Central Processor control lever.
- Follow the newly opened passage. Take the north-east passage and use the door at its end to enter Windscale.
These are the main-story requirements for opening the route. Atomfall also has optional leads and a sandbox-style progression structure, so side quests are not all prerequisites for reaching the plant.
Prepare for hazards inside
A Gamer Guides walkthrough for obtaining an Oberon sample describes Windscale as contaminated and warns of infection spores and hostile enemies. It recommends having Infection Resistance and Strange Tonics available. Treat that as practical walkthrough advice, not a guarantee that a particular supply or combat approach is required.

If your immediate goal is to reach the Oberon Dig Site, the same guide says you can avoid most encounters and concentrate on getting to the large doors leading onward. That trades fighting for a quicker push through the area; the guide does not provide a controlled comparison of the risks or resource costs. Xbox’s overview of Atomfall’s survival mechanics also emphasizes the role of scavenged resources, weapons, and ammunition, so bring supplies that fit your approach.

In a Steam Community discussion titled “Map of the Windscale Plant?”, players reported in 2025 that the map displayed inside Windscale showed the Interchange map and that they could not find a dedicated map for Windscale or the Oberon Dig Site. This is an anecdotal, dated report—not confirmation of how the map works in every current version—so be ready to navigate without relying on a separate plant map.
