Read the practice participation and game-status fields separately, then check the official inactive list close to kickoff. The NFL injury report helps you judge whether a player is expected to be available; it does not predict his fantasy points, snaps or workload.
What the practice report tells you
Start with the player’s injury designation and practice participation entry. The NFL uses three practice terms: Did Not Participate (DNP), Limited Participation and Full Participation. Under the league’s practice-report policy, limited means the player took part in fewer than 100 percent of his normal repetitions; full means he took part in 100 percent.
These entries describe practice work, not a final decision about playing in the game. A limited practice does not mean a player is out. Check whether the club identifies a practice absence as injury-related or as rest; the context changes how to interpret the entry. The NFL’s 2016 policy announcement explains the reporting framework.
How to interpret game status
The separate Game Status Report communicates expected availability. The NFL defines Questionable as uncertain whether the player will play, Doubtful as unlikely to participate and Out as not playing. These are qualitative labels, not numerical odds or fantasy projections.

A player listed on the club’s practice report may have no game-status designation. The NFL’s 2017 Injury Report Policy says: “If a player was listed on the club’s Practice Report during the week, but is not listed in the club’s Game Status Report, it means that the club is certain he will play.” This does not mean the player has no injury; it means the club is certain he will participate.
The Probable label is no longer used. In 2016, the NFL said approximately 95 percent of players previously listed as Probable played, and cited that history when it eliminated the category. That historical rate is not the chance that a currently Questionable player will suit up.

Use the week’s reports in order
- Identify the practice entry. Note the injury, DNP/limited/full participation and whether an absence is marked as rest rather than injury-related.
- Look for the game-status field. Treat Questionable as uncertain, Doubtful as unlikely and Out as unavailable. A missing designation can mean the club is certain the player will play, even if he appeared on the practice report.
- Check when the information was filed. The NFL’s 2026 calendar lists report schedules by game day and requires clubs to update a status if a player’s condition changes after the initial filing. An early-week entry is not the final word.
- Refresh close to kickoff. NFL fantasy support says teams designate players who cannot play as inactive about 90 minutes before scheduled game time. Check the official team or league update near your lineup deadline, particularly for a player whose availability remains uncertain.
Give concussion entries extra care
A concussion listing calls for more than a simple read of the practice column. NFL concussion guidance describes five phases before a player is cleared to fully practice or participate in a game. Do not infer clearance from a generic practice note; use the team’s current official update and the league’s Concussion Return-to-Participation Protocol.

An active designation does not establish how many snaps a player will get or how productive he will be. For lineup decisions, keep the injury report in its lane: it informs expected availability. Evaluate role, usage and matchup with separate player- and team-specific evidence. Useful report-reading signals are:
