For Epic Games Store’s weekly giveaway, Epic says a claimed game remains in your account library if you download it later. A temporary Steam Free Weekend works differently: access ends with the event unless you buy the game. Check the specific offer page for its deadline and conditions.
Check the offer type and deadline first
Start at the official Epic Games Store Free Games page or the store page for the promotion you saw. Check the offer’s displayed start and end time, as well as any conditions shown there. Store schedules, interfaces, regional eligibility and game support can change, so don’t rely on a remembered schedule or an old post.
For its weekly giveaway, Epic support says a new game becomes available on Thursday at 8 AM Pacific and can be claimed for seven days. Those figures describe Epic’s weekly promotion, not every Epic offer or another PC store’s schedule. Follow the live offer page for the game you want. Epic also says a missed weekly promotion cannot simply be claimed after its offer period has passed. Epic’s weekly free game support page explains the schedule and claim window.
Claim the game before the offer expires
- Sign in to the account where you want the game. If you use more than one Epic account, check which one is active before claiming.
- Open the live offer page. Review the displayed deadline and conditions for that game.
- Complete the free claim while the offer is active. Follow the controls shown on the current store page. Epic says two-factor authentication must be enabled on the Epic account to claim its weekly free game.
- Confirm that the title is in the intended account’s library. The important step for Epic’s weekly giveaway is claiming it before the offer ends—not starting the download before the deadline.
Epic support states, “Once claimed, the game is yours permanently – even if you don’t download it right away.” In practical terms, the weekly giveaway adds a continuing library license or entitlement to the account. It is not ordinary property ownership: Epic’s license agreement describes its software as licensed rather than sold, and uncommon circumstances can make software unavailable for further download or access. Install the claimed game through Epic Games Launcher
You can install after claiming, when you are ready, using Epic Games Launcher. Epic’s published installation steps are:
- Get the launcher if you don’t have it. Visit the Epic Games Store website and select Download in the upper-right corner. If the installer does not start automatically, use the download button for your platform. See Epic’s launcher download instructions.
- Install and open Epic Games Launcher.
- Open Library and find the game you claimed.
- Select the game, choose an installation directory, and click Install.
- Wait for the download to finish, then select the game’s icon to launch it.

If the claimed game is missing from your library
- Check the account. Make sure you are signed into the account used to claim the title.
- Review library filters. A filter that shows only installed games can hide a title you have not downloaded.
- Refresh the library and check whether the title appears.
- Check operating-system support. The game may not support the system you are using.
- Consider whether the title was a temporary build. Some event versions, such as open beta builds, may be removed when the event ends; that is different from a normal giveaway claim.

So if you saw a game advertised as free, identify both the store and the offer type. A giveaway, a Free Weekend and a free-to-play release do not promise the same access after the promotion ends.
