Each revealed number tells you exactly how many mines touch that square, including diagonally. To find a guaranteed safe square, count the clue’s still-covered neighbors, account for mines you have actually proved, and open a square only when the visible clues leave no other possibility. A square that merely seems less risky is still a guess.
What do the numbers mean in Minesweeper?
A number counts mines in the surrounding squares: horizontally, vertically, and diagonally. An interior square can have eight neighbors; a square at an edge or corner has fewer. The clue counts adjacent mines, not the total number of mines elsewhere on the board.

A blank square has no adjacent mines. Many versions automatically reveal neighboring safe squares when a blank is opened, but that behavior and other controls can differ between implementations.

How to use one clue to prove a square safe or mined
Look only at the clue’s neighbors that remain covered. Subtract any adjacent mines you have established from the clue’s number. The result is how many mines must still be among its covered neighbors.

- All remaining covered neighbors must be mines: If a 1 has exactly one covered neighbor and no other adjacent mine, that covered square must be a mine.
- All remaining covered neighbors are safe: If a clue’s mine count is already accounted for by known mines, every other covered neighbor of that clue is safe.
- Neither conclusion follows: If the remaining mine count is greater than zero but less than the number of covered neighbors, the clue alone does not identify which individual squares are safe.
For example, if a 2 already touches two squares proved to be mines, any other covered neighbor of that 2 is safe. But if you have only guessed that those two squares are mines, the conclusion is not guaranteed.
How to compare overlapping clues
When a single clue leaves several possibilities, compare it with a nearby clue. Each clue constrains a group of covered squares; if one group is contained within the other, subtract the smaller group’s requirement from the larger one’s.

A simple edge-pattern example
Suppose a 1 requires one mine among covered squares A and B. Next to it, a 2 requires two mines among A, B, and C. The first clue says A and B together contain one mine. The second says A, B, and C contain two. Subtracting the first requirement from the second shows that C must be a mine. Since the first clue still needs one mine among A and B, it does not tell you which of those two is safe.
The deduction depends on using the same covered squares in both counts and on treating any already proved mines consistently. If the groups do not have the subset relationship described, that subtraction does not establish the same conclusion.

Are flags proof that a square contains a mine?
No. A flag is your annotation or mark, not independent evidence about the board. A deduction is only as sound as the mine locations you have actually established; a mistaken flag can make later reasoning wrong.
What is chording, and is it safe?
In many versions, chording means clicking a revealed clue after placing the expected number of flags around it. The game then opens the clue’s unflagged neighbors at once. It is a shortcut, not a separate safety rule: if a flag is wrong, chording may open a mine. The input used for flagging or chording varies by game and platform, so check the controls for the version you are playing.

Can logic always find a safe move?
No. In ordinary Minesweeper, some positions allow multiple mine arrangements that all fit the visible clues. If those arrangements imply different outcomes for every available move, the clues do not prove a safe choice and you must guess. Some variants advertise boards generated to be solvable without guessing, but that guarantee is specific to those variants, not a universal Minesweeper rule.
