Minecraft coordinates are always listed as X, Y, Z: X tells you east or west, Y tells you height, and Z tells you north or south. Positive X is east, negative X is west, positive Z is south, and negative Z is north. To display them, use the F3 debug screen in Java Edition or turn on Show Coordinates in Bedrock Edition.
What do X, Y, and Z mean?
Minecraft uses three values to show a player’s position in the world: X, Y, then Z. The middle value is always Y, the vertical height. The X and Z values show position across the horizontal plane. Minecraft describes coordinates as a system for determining a player’s exact position using these three values (Minecraft.net: Exploring the Overworld in Minecraft).
- X: east or west. Positive X is east; negative X is west.
- Y: vertical height. Y increases upward and decreases downward.
- Z: south or north. Positive Z is south; negative Z is north.
For example, 120, 64, -30 means X is 120 (east of the world origin), Y is 64 (height), and Z is -30 (north). The order matters: do not mistake the last value for height.
How do you turn on coordinates?
Java Edition
- Press F3 to open the debug screen.
- Find the XYZ category and read its three values in X, Y, Z order.
The official Minecraft guide identifies F3 and the XYZ category as the Java Edition method (Minecraft.net: Exploring the Overworld in Minecraft). On some keyboards, you may need to use the function-key combination your device requires to send F3.

Bedrock Edition
- Pause the game and open Settings.
- Choose Game.
- Under World Options, enable Show Coordinates.
Menu wording or placement can vary by platform or game version; look in the world’s game settings for the coordinate display toggle if the path differs. The displayed values use the same X, Y, Z order.
How do you use coordinates to navigate?
Record the coordinates of a home, base, or other point you want to revisit. Compare your current values with the destination: adjust X to travel east or west, Z to travel south or north, and Y to change height. This makes coordinates useful for returning from an underground trip or sharing a location with another player.

Coordinates are measured from the world origin, conventionally described as the point (0, 0, 0), with values marking distances along the axes (Minecraft Education: Coding with Minecraft 3 — Student Workbook). The origin is not the same thing as your current respawn point: sleeping in a bed does not reset your coordinate values.
Why does Y matter when mining?
Y tells you the vertical level where you are, so it can help you understand how deep you are while exploring caves or mining. Minecraft’s overview notes that some resources, including diamond ore, are more common at particular Y levels (Minecraft.net: Exploring the Overworld in Minecraft). The useful level depends on the game version and resource; this coordinate guide does not identify one universal optimal mining height.

Can commands show coordinates for a location?
Yes. Minecraft’s official commands guide gives /locate structure minecraft:stronghold as an example that returns the nearest stronghold’s X, Y, and Z coordinates (Minecraft.net: How to Use Commands in Minecraft). This is separate from reading your own position on the screen, and command availability depends on the world’s permissions and settings.
