A dark pattern is a game interface or monetization choice that obscures costs, steers you toward a decision, or makes an unwanted action harder to stop. Look for unclear buttons, virtual-currency layers, undisclosed or poorly explained random-reward odds, artificial urgency, and cancellation or parental controls that are harder to find than the purchase button. These warning signs justify slowing down and checking the details; they do not, by themselves, prove that a developer broke the law.
What a dark pattern is—and what it is not
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes digital dark patterns as interface designs that can “obscure, subvert, or impair consumer autonomy, decision-making, or choice.” Its 2021 workshop used the phrase for “a range of potentially manipulative user interface designs used on websites and mobile apps.” Read the qualifiers carefully: a design can be concerning without every instance being unlawful, and the legal answer depends on the facts and the jurisdiction.

The useful question for a player is not whether a screen feels persuasive. Games must persuade you to continue a story, try a mode, or learn a mechanic. Instead ask whether the design gives you a clear, voluntary choice with enough information to understand the consequence.

A nudge changes how options are presented while leaving the important information and a practical alternative available. A dark pattern can hide material information, make the unwanted option visually or procedurally difficult, or exploit confusion about what a control will do. The same visual technique—such as a highlighted button—can be ordinary interface design in one context and manipulative in another.

- Ordinary game feedback: a highlighted “Continue” button after a completed level, with no charge attached.
- Potentially problematic steering: a highlighted button whose label suggests continuing play but confirms a purchase, while the no-purchase path is buried in a different menu.
- Ordinary scarcity: a clearly dated event that ends at a stated time and explains what remains available.
- Potentially problematic urgency: a countdown that pressures immediate payment without explaining the exact item, odds, renewal, or end condition.
Use “potentially” deliberately. The FTC’s examples are recognition principles, not a regulator-issued scorecard for games.
Why game interfaces deserve extra scrutiny
Games combine rapid input, emotional momentum, social pressure, and repeated transactions. A player may be focused on waking a device, loading a match, previewing an item, or keeping up with friends when a button appears. Virtual currencies then separate the moment of payment from the moment of purchase, making the real cost less visible.
Randomized rewards add another layer: you pay for an attempt, not a specified item. Limited-time banners, streaks, and influencer demonstrations can make a rare result feel imminent even when the stated probability is low. None of these mechanics is automatically deceptive. They do mean that a careful player should stop, identify the decision, and translate it into real money before confirming.
The warning signs to check before spending
1. A routine play action can trigger a purchase
Read the label, location, and result of every button, especially on controller layouts and touch screens. Is the purchase action visually distinct from “wake,” “load,” “preview,” “equip,” or “close”? Does pressing a familiar location confirm payment because the layout changes between screens? Can a child or a distracted player activate a purchase without an unmistakable review step?
In its December 2022 Fortnite announcement, the FTC alleged that confusing and inconsistent controls could lead to charges while players were waking the game, using a loading screen, or previewing an item. The announcement described allegations and proposed orders, not a universal finding that similar controls in every game are illegal. Treat it as a practical design warning: a normal play input should not silently become a purchase confirmation. Read the FTC’s Fortnite/Epic Games announcement.
2. The real-money price disappears behind virtual currency
Before buying, write down the amount charged to your card or app-store account and the number of coins, gems, crystals, or tokens received. Then calculate the cost of the item in dollars (or your local currency), including any unused balance. A bundle can make an item look inexpensive because the game displays only its token price. Odd bundle sizes can also leave you buying more currency than the item requires.

Ask three questions:
- Can I see the real-money price on the same screen as the final purchase?
- How many conversions occur between payment and the item I want?
- Does one confirmation authorize only this purchase, or does it enable a recurring subscription or stored-payment charge?
In a January 2025 announcement about Genshin Impact, the FTC alleged that players exchanged real money for virtual currency and then exchanged that currency multiple times to open loot boxes, with unusual denominations that could make total spending harder to track. The proposed settlement described direct real-money purchase options and exchange-rate disclosures, but the agency said court approval was required before the order would take effect. A loot box, pack, capsule, or event pull contains a random virtual item. Before paying, locate the complete odds, the item pool, duplicate rules, pity or guarantee rules, and any regional or platform qualification. “Up to,” “featured,” or a dramatic animation does not tell you the probability of receiving a particular prize.
The FTC’s 2019 loot-box workshop examined mechanics, marketing, and financial commitments. Its materials are useful for asking whether a player can understand the transaction before committing, but they do not establish one legal rule for every loot box. Review the FTC loot-box workshop.
4. A timer creates pressure without usable context
Record what the timer actually ends: a discount, an event, a banner, or merely the current display. Check the time zone, whether the offer returns, whether the price changes, and whether the odds or item pool change at the deadline. A specific, verifiable deadline can be legitimate event scheduling. A vague “last chance” message that resets or withholds material terms is a reason to leave the screen and investigate.
Influencer videos and social posts can intensify urgency. A creator’s successful pull demonstrates that it happened, not that your next attempt has a comparable chance. Compare the promotion with the written odds and terms shown in the game.

Count the steps required to close an offer without buying. Is “No thanks” a low-contrast link while “Buy now” is a large button? Does declining open another prompt, require scrolling, or threaten loss of progress? A fair flow should make acceptance and refusal understandable and reasonably accessible.

The FTC’s 2022 staff report discusses hidden charges, misleading advertising, confusing subscription cancellation, and privacy choices as examples of dark-pattern concerns beyond games. Each example has its own facts, so use the report as a lens for inspecting a screen rather than as a legal conclusion about a particular title. 6. Starting is obvious; stopping is hidden
After a purchase or subscription, find the same controls a new player would need to stop it. Look for account settings, the platform’s purchase history, refund instructions, and cancellation steps. Save screenshots of the confirmation, price, terms, and transaction ID.
In the Fortnite announcement, the FTC alleged that refund and cancellation features were obscured and difficult to find. The practical comparison is simple: if a game can explain how to buy in one or two obvious steps, it should not force you through a confusing search to cancel or request a refund. Platform refund policies vary, so follow the store or console process that handled the payment as well as any in-game process. See the FTC’s description of the allegations and proposed orders.

7. Privacy and communication defaults do not fit the player
Check whether voice chat, text chat, friend requests, targeted advertising, and data-sharing choices are enabled by default. A child may be able to communicate with strangers or make a purchase before a parent notices. Controls can differ by game, platform, country, age setting, and update, so verify them directly after installing and after major patches.
The FTC’s Fortnite announcement included allegations about children’s privacy and voice and text communications enabled by default. That example does not tell you the current settings of another game; it tells you where to look: privacy, communication, parental approval, and spending menus.

How to translate a virtual-currency offer into a real decision
Use this worksheet before a purchase or randomized reward:
- Identify the charge. Note the exact bundle, subscription, or one-time payment and the currency in which it is billed.
- Record the exchange rate. Write how many game tokens the payment provides and whether a bonus is conditional or promotional.
- Price the target item. Divide the item’s token cost by the effective token price. Include the value of tokens that will remain unused.
- Count conversion steps. List every exchange from money to currency to key, ticket, pull, or box.
- Read the authorization language. Confirm whether the button buys one attempt, a multi-pack, a recurring plan, or stored credit.
- Set a stop point. Decide the maximum amount before opening the reward, not after an unlucky result.
For random rewards, add the probability, item pool, duplicate treatment, and guarantee conditions to the worksheet. If any of those are missing or too difficult to locate, do not treat the animation or “featured” label as a substitute for the odds.
A step-by-step dark-pattern check
Run this audit while calm, preferably before adding a payment method:
- Open the offer without confirming it. Use the information, details, or rates link and capture the full screen.
- Find the real-money total. If the game shows only virtual currency, open the store’s bundle list and calculate the effective price.
- Test the non-purchase path. Close, decline, or back out. Note extra prompts, misleading labels, or lost progress.
- Inspect random-reward disclosures. Locate odds, item pools, guarantees, duplicate rules, and event dates before paying.
- Check the confirmation step. The final button should name the item and price, not merely say “Continue” or “Accept.”
- Review account controls. Locate spending history, payment methods, subscriptions, refunds, and cancellation instructions.
- Configure child protections. Require approval for purchases, remove stored payment details where practical, and set age-appropriate chat permissions.
- Check privacy and communication. Turn off voice or text contact that the player does not need, and review friend-request and data-sharing settings.
- Pause at urgency prompts. Write down the end time and verify what changes when the timer reaches zero.
- Keep records. Save receipts, screenshots, odds, and support correspondence if you later dispute a charge or report a misleading flow.
What parents should configure first
Do not rely on a game’s age rating alone. Use the platform’s purchase-approval and family settings, then check the game’s own account menu. The exact labels change, but the controls normally fall into four groups:

Recheck these settings after an account transfer, a major update, a new device, or a change in the child’s age classification. A setting shown in a game may not override a platform-level family control, and a platform control may not cover a third-party payment route.

What the available statistics do—and do not—show
There is no reliable FTC statistic saying that a particular percentage of mobile or online games use dark patterns. A widely quoted 2024 review covered subscription-service websites and mobile apps, not games generally. The FTC reported that the International Consumer Protection and Enforcement Network (ICPEN) reviewed 642 sites and apps; nearly 76% used at least one possible dark pattern and nearly 67% used multiple possible patterns. These cases are examples of questions to ask, not a list of games to condemn. They also show why legal precision matters: an agency announcement may describe allegations, a settlement proposal, or a court-approved order, and those are not interchangeable.
How to compare two purchase flows
If you are deciding whether one game’s monetization is easier to understand than another’s, score the flows on the same six axes. This is an editorial comparison method, not an official rating:

What to do after an unwanted charge or misleading prompt
- Stop interacting with the offer. Do not make additional purchases while trying to recover the first one.
- Preserve evidence. Save the receipt, transaction ID, screenshots of the offer and odds, and the date and time.
- Use the payment platform’s process. Submit a refund or unauthorized-charge request through the store, console, bank, or payment service that processed the transaction.
- Contact the game’s support team. State the account, item, amount, and requested remedy factually; attach records rather than relying on memory.
- Secure the account. Remove stored payment details, change the password if another person may have accessed it, and enable purchase approval or two-factor authentication where available.
- Report serious conduct. Consumer-protection agencies accept complaints, but describe what happened and identify your jurisdiction. A complaint is not a determination that the conduct violated a law.
The practical rule
When a game makes buying fast but understanding, declining, or stopping slow, pause. Translate every token into money, read random-reward terms before paying, verify the timer, and make sure a child’s purchase and communication controls match the account holder. Those habits help you recognize a potentially manipulative design without claiming that every persuasive game mechanic is illegal.
