To record your terminal on Ubuntu with Terminalizer, install Node.js and npm, install Terminalizer with npm install -g terminalizer, then run terminalizer record demo. Terminalizer saves the session as an editable demo.yml; you can replay it locally, render it as an animated GIF, generate a web player, or upload it and receive a shareable player link.

If you are asking “How do I record my terminal on Ubuntu?”, “How do I turn a terminal session into a GIF?”, or “How do I share a Terminalizer recording?”, the commands are short. The important work is choosing the right output, checking the YAML for secrets, and understanding what is and is not known about the package and hosted sharing.

Terminalizer is an open-source command-line utility for capturing terminal activity. The project README describes it as: “Record your terminal and generate animated gif images or share a web player link www.terminalizer.com”. The official documentation likewise says, “Start recording your terminal using the record command.”
A recording is more than a finished image. Terminalizer writes a YAML file containing configuration and recorded frames. That file is the source for playback, GIF rendering, web-player generation, and sharing. Because it is editable, you can remove a frame, adjust timing, or change the terminal’s appearance before producing the final result.

Install Terminalizer on Ubuntu
1. Install Node.js and npm for your Ubuntu release
Terminalizer requires Node.js. Install Node.js and npm using the package method appropriate for the Ubuntu release you run, then verify both executables:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →node --version
npm --version
An Ubuntu installation commonly uses the distribution packages, for example:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install nodejs npm
Ubuntu releases do not all ship the same Node.js version. If your release’s packages are too old or your project requires a particular Node.js major version, use the Node.js installation guidance for that release instead of assuming the example command is suitable everywhere.
2. Install Terminalizer globally
Install the command globally so terminalizer is available from any project directory:
npm install -g terminalizer
The npm package listing notes that Node.js is required and that newer Node.js versions may need development tools to build C++ add-ons. If npm reports a compiler, node-gyp, or native-addon error, resolve that prerequisite before repeating the Terminalizer installation.

3. Handle global npm permissions without blindly using sudo
A global npm install may fail with an EACCES permission error when npm’s prefix points to a system-owned directory. Running every npm command with sudo changes ownership and creates a different maintenance and security trade-off; it is not a universally safe fix.
A user-owned global prefix avoids writing to system directories:
mkdir -p "$HOME/.local"
npm config set prefix "$HOME/.local"
echo 'export PATH="$HOME/.local/bin:$PATH"' >> "$HOME/.profile"
. "$HOME/.profile"
npm install -g terminalizer
Open a new shell, or reload your profile as shown, and check that the executable resolves:
command -v terminalizer
terminalizer --help
If your shell uses a startup file other than ~/.profile, add the same PATH entry to the file that your shell actually reads.

4. Confirm the installed version and its freshness
The npm listing observed for this package identifies version 0.12.0 and says it was published about two years before that listing was captured. Package activity and compatibility can change, so check the current npm listing immediately before installation and record the version you actually installed. The available sources do not establish a complete Ubuntu-version compatibility matrix or an authoritative maintenance roadmap.
Record a terminal session
Start a named recording
- Change to a directory where you can safely review the recording.
- Start Terminalizer with a name:
terminalizer record demo
- Perform the commands and interaction you want to demonstrate.
- Exit the recorded command or shell when the demonstration is complete.
Terminalizer writes demo.yml in the current directory. The name you provide becomes the YAML filename, so terminalizer record deployment-check creates deployment-check.yml.

Control the recording command and configuration
The record command exposes options for a custom configuration and a command override. The documented switches are -c, --config for selecting configuration and -d, --command for selecting the command to run. Use these when the default shell is not the thing you want to demonstrate, or when you need a repeatable command entry point.
The -k, --skip-sharing switch suppresses the sharing prompt. It is useful for recordings that must remain local while you edit and review the YAML.
Stop and inspect before doing anything else
Do not upload or publish immediately after recording. Open the YAML in a text editor and inspect both the visible frames and the configuration. Search for:
- API keys, session cookies, passwords, private keys, and one-time tokens;
- private hostnames, internal IP addresses, usernames, and personal directory paths;
- command output containing customer data, source code, or infrastructure details;
- environment-derived values that appeared even though you did not type them directly.
Remove or replace sensitive frames in the editable recording, then replay it to confirm that the edited sequence still makes sense. Redacting only the final GIF is insufficient if you later share the YAML or regenerate another output from it.
Replay, render, generate, and share
Replay locally
Use local playback to check timing, readability, and whether your edits removed the intended material:
terminalizer play demo
Replay reads the recording source and shows the session in a terminal. It is the fastest way to catch an accidental blank frame, a command that is too fast to read, or a prompt that appears out of order.

Render an animated GIF
Render the recording into an animated GIF with:
terminalizer render demo
The render command supports an output filename, quality, and a step value that reduces the number of rendered frames. Use the output filename when you need a predictable asset name; use quality to balance visual clarity against file size; and increase the step when a long capture produces an unnecessarily large GIF. A larger step can make motion less smooth, so replay the result and check that important text remains readable.
Generate a web player locally
Create files for a browser-based player with:
terminalizer generate demo
This path is useful when you want a player for embedding or local hosting without uploading the recording. Keep the generated files with the YAML and any required assets when moving the player to another machine.
Upload and receive an online-player link
After reviewing and sanitizing the source, upload it with:
terminalizer share demo
The command uploads the recording and returns a hosted player link. Anyone who obtains that link may be able to view the session, so treat the URL as public unless the service explicitly provides access controls. The available documentation does not establish a retention period, deletion workflow, privacy setting, or service-level guarantee for hosted recordings. Do not upload confidential material on the assumption that a link will remain private or permanent.

Edit timing, appearance, and reproducibility in the YAML
Terminalizer’s configuration lets you tune how the session looks and how faithfully it reproduces the original interaction. Make one change at a time, replay the file, and only then render or share it.
Frame delays and step: fidelity versus size
Frame delays control how long each captured state remains visible. Short delays preserve the pace of a live session but can make commands impossible to read; longer delays improve comprehension while making the demonstration feel slower. The render step reduces rendered frames. Together, these controls determine the balance between smooth motion, readable text, and output size.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Terminal appearance
The documented styling areas include font, colors, theme, cursor, and window frame. Choose a font and color contrast that remain legible at the final GIF dimensions, not merely in your full-size terminal. A visible cursor helps viewers follow input, while a distracting window frame can consume space when the recording is embedded in a narrow page.
Reproducibility settings
Configuration also records details that affect whether another person can reproduce the view: the command, working directory, environment, columns, and rows. Set the working directory deliberately, use stable terminal dimensions, and avoid relying on environment variables that only exist on your machine. If a command depends on credentials or private paths, replace those values before sharing rather than documenting them as if they were portable.

- Make a copy of the original YAML so you can recover an unedited capture.

- Adjust delays, dimensions, or styling in small changes.
- Run

Troubleshoot installation and rendering problems
“terminalizer: command not found”
- Run
npm install -g terminalizeragain and read npm’s final installation path. - Run
npm prefix -gand check whether itsbindirectory is onPATH. - If you used a user-owned prefix, reload the shell profile or open a new terminal.
- Use
command -v terminalizerto confirm which executable your shell finds.
Global npm permission errors
An EACCES failure usually means the global prefix is not writable by your user. Use a user-writable prefix as shown earlier, or follow the permission approach maintained for your Ubuntu environment. Avoid changing ownership of broad system directories merely to force one install to succeed.
Native build or node-gyp errors
The npm package notes that newer Node.js versions may require development tools for C++ add-ons. Install the compiler and development prerequisites appropriate to your Ubuntu release, then rerun the npm command. If the error names a missing header or library, copy the exact package name from the error and verify it against your release’s package repository rather than installing an unrelated version.
Rendering failures on Ubuntu 18.04 or 20.04
Community Ubuntu guidance for 18.04 and 20.04 lists packages that can resolve installation or rendering failures: node-gyp, libnode-dev, libnss3, libgtk-3-0, libxss1, libasound2, and libgbm1. This is troubleshooting evidence, not an official Terminalizer dependency matrix, and package names or availability can differ on other Ubuntu releases. Install only the packages your error and release require, then retry a small test recording before processing a long session.
The GIF is too large or difficult to read
- Increase the render step to reduce frame count, then check that text does not jump too abruptly.
- Use a deliberate output filename so test renders do not overwrite your approved asset.
- Adjust frame delays to hold important commands long enough for reading.
- Reduce unnecessary shell narration and blank periods at the recording stage instead of trying to compress everything afterward.
- Review quality and terminal dimensions together; a smaller file is not useful if command output becomes illegible.
The shared link does not meet your privacy needs
Do not upload the recording. Use terminalizer generate and host the player under infrastructure where you control access, or distribute a sanitized GIF. The available sources do not document hosted-link retention or access controls, so you should not infer either from the existence of a share command.
A repeatable Ubuntu workflow
For a reliable demonstration, separate capture, editing, validation, and publication:
- Prepare: choose a clean working directory, stable terminal dimensions, and a command that does not print secrets.
- Capture: run
terminalizer record nameand perform only the steps the viewer needs. - Review: inspect
name.ymlfor private values and remove unwanted frames. - Validate: replay with
terminalizer play name; fix timing, cursor, font, colors, or dimensions. - Publish locally or visually: render a GIF or generate a web player according to the audience and hosting constraints.
- Share selectively: use
terminalizer share nameonly for sanitized, non-confidential recordings and keep the returned URL with the approved version of the YAML.
This workflow keeps the editable source available, makes redaction possible before publication, and lets you choose between a portable GIF, a locally hosted player, and a hosted link without pretending they provide the same privacy or reproducibility.
