The practical objective is to discover which creatures inhabit your world, learn the requirements for each variant, and build a stable group of dragons for transport, exploration and combat.
Dragons can be tamed, bred and ridden. Because the pack includes variant-specific information, treat each species as its own progression problem rather than assuming that one universal food or interaction works everywhere. World generation emphasizes tall mountains, broad plains and deep oceans. These spaces are designed for aerial travel, but they also create practical survival concerns: a mountain base may be defensible yet difficult to reach on foot, while an ocean crossing can be much faster with a suitable mount. Establish waypoints, storage and safe landing areas before making long flights.
Clear dungeons for progression
Complex dungeons provide combat challenges and progression targets beyond ordinary caves. Enter them after preparing food, armor, weapons, healing supplies and an escape route. A dragon can improve mobility, but tight interiors may favor conventional equipment and careful room-by-room exploration.

Build a Viking-style settlement
Viking content includes ships, villages, weapons and armor, with themes of settlement and pillaging. Use villages and coastal areas as navigation landmarks, then expand with farms, storage, breeding areas and landing space for dragons. Ships and ocean routes are particularly useful before you have a reliable long-distance flying mount.
How to install Scales and Skies
Before you begin
- Own and install Minecraft Java Edition.
- Use a launcher that can install Forge modpacks from the official CurseForge or Modrinth listing.
- Choose the pack’s Minecraft 1.18.2 and Forge combination exactly.
- Keep enough free disk space for the pack, launcher files and generated worlds.

Launcher installation
- Open your Minecraft launcher or modpack manager and locate Isle of Berk: Scales and Skies.
- Select the listing for Minecraft Java Edition 1.18.2 and Forge, not a similarly named pack for another version or loader.
- Install the pack and let the launcher download its mods and configuration files.
- Open the installed instance’s profile settings and confirm that the game version is 1.18.2 and the loader is Forge.

Installing individual mods by hand is more error-prone because a pack’s configuration, dependencies and world-generation files are designed to work together. Use the complete pack listing unless you have a specific reason to maintain a custom fork.
Updating without losing a world
Back up your world before every major update. The official 3.0.3 changelog specifically recommends a fresh reinstall and a world backup for that update. That advice is sensible for any substantial pack change because block IDs, world-generation settings, structures and creature data can change between releases.

- Quit Minecraft completely and copy the world’s save folder to a separate drive or cloud location.
- Record the old pack version and the launcher profile used to open it.
- Install the new Scales and Skies version as a separate instance when possible; do not overwrite the working installation immediately.
- Open the backup in the new instance only after confirming that the pack and Forge versions match.
- Travel to important bases, breeding areas and unexplored borders to look for missing blocks, altered terrain or creature-data problems.
- Keep the original instance and backup until you have played the updated world long enough to trust it.
A fresh installation does not mean deleting your only copy of a save. It means replacing the pack files while retaining a recoverable backup of the world.
How to tame dragons
Taming is species- and variant-dependent. The official 3.0.3 notes describe an updated Dragon Manual containing spawn locations and details for taming specific variants. That means the pack itself expects you to consult the manual rather than follow one universal recipe.

- Open the Dragon Manual in-game and identify the species or variant you want.
- Read its listed spawn location before searching. Mountain, plains and ocean biomes can require very different travel plans.
- Prepare a safe approach: bring food, armor, blocks for shelter, a bed or waypoint, and storage for items found during the search.
- Locate the dragon and observe it before interacting. Keep an escape route and avoid starting a fight near cliffs, lava or deep water.
- Follow the manual’s stated taming interaction for that specific variant. Do not assume that an item or method used for one dragon applies to another.
- After the dragon is tamed, test movement and follow behavior in a fenced or otherwise controlled area before taking it over a mountain or ocean.
- Give the dragon a clearly marked home area and keep breeding or valuable variants away from hazards until you understand their behavior.
The available project information does not establish a single universal taming item, time requirement or control scheme. Those details may differ by species and pack version, so use the manual included with your installed release rather than a guide written for an older version.
Breeding and managing a dragon collection
Breeding turns one successful tame into a longer-term collection goal. Start by keeping a record of the species, variant, location and any manual instructions you used. This prevents repeated searches when you later want a second parent or a specific variant.

- Separate roles: keep travel mounts, combat-ready dragons and breeding stock in different pens or marked areas.
- Protect rare variants: use enclosed shelters with gates, lighting and a safe landing zone.
- Plan food storage: place chests near pens so feeding does not require repeated trips through hostile terrain.
- Track offspring: name or label dragons so you know which parents produced a particular result.
- Test before transport: verify that a newly bred dragon follows, lands and survives the route you intend to use.
The listing’s species and variant counts make collection breadth a major part of the pack, but they do not guarantee that every variant is equally easy to find or tame. Expect some goals to require biome travel and repeated exploration.

Riding dragons safely
Riding is most valuable for surveying terrain, crossing oceans and reaching dungeon or mountain entrances. Treat a first flight as a test rather than a commute.
- Start in an open plain with no trees, cliffs or water immediately below.
- Confirm that you can mount, dismount and regain control before carrying valuables.
- Build a landing platform near your base and at regular travel destinations.
- Carry blocks for emergency platforms and a backup route home.
- Do not take an untested dragon into a dungeon; narrow rooms can make a mount less useful than ordinary movement.
Large terrain features are an advantage for aerial exploration, but they also magnify mistakes. A marked network of bases, docks and landing pads makes the world easier to navigate than relying on memory alone.
Playing with friends: client and server setup
Scales and Skies supports both client and server play. CurseForge lists a matching server package, while the Modrinth project page identifies the pack as supporting client and server. Every player should use the same pack release, Minecraft version and Forge version as the server.

Server checklist
- Download the server package that matches the client release you intend to use.
- Install the required Forge 1.18.2 server files in a new server directory.
- Accept Minecraft’s EULA in the server directory before starting the server.
- Start the server once so it creates configuration and world folders, then stop it cleanly.
