A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11A broken modpack server is usually recoverable without deleting the world. Stop the server, make a byte-for-byte copy of its entire root, record the exact Minecraft, loader and Java versions, then use latest.log or the newest crash report to fix the first causal error. Only after software-level fixes fail should you build a clean server directory and copy the verified world into it.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
Do this before changing anything
The safest repair is reversible. Reinstalling a loader, importing the pack again or deleting files in the live directory can overwrite the very logs, configurations or libraries needed to identify the fault. Preserve the original first and perform every experiment on a copy.

Use the server console’s stop command if it still accepts input. If it is frozen, terminate it through the host control panel or operating system only after allowing a normal stop to fail. Do not repeatedly force-kill a server that is writing world data.
2. Archive the complete server root
Copy the whole root, not just the world folder. Include the world, mods, config, scripts, libraries, the server jar, loader files and every log. For a Linux or macOS shell, a same-machine copy can be made with:

3. Record the environment and the last change
Write down the Minecraft version, loader (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge or another loader), loader version, Java version, launch command, memory setting and the last action taken before the failure. A newly added mod, changed configuration, imported ZIP or Java update is often more informative than the final shutdown message. Fabric crash reports expose operating-system details, Java version, allocated memory and the Fabric mod list in their System Details section.

Console output
Keep the complete startup attempt, including lines before and after the shutdown. The last line may only say that the process exited; it is rarely the underlying cause.
latest.log and older logs
Open logs/latest.log from the failed attempt. Fabric documentation notes that the latest log is usually named latest.log. Earlier attempts remain in the same logs directory and can reveal which change introduced the failure.

Crash reports
If the server generated one, open the newest file in crash-reports. Check its timestamp and read the section headed ---- Minecraft Crash Report ----. Fabric documentation identifies the stack trace in that section as the most important part because it contains references to the mod that caused the crash.
Read upward from the shutdown
Search backward from the shutdown message for the first meaningful ERROR, FATAL, Exception or Caused by. Follow the first named mod, API, mixin, class or version conflict. Later errors are often cascades caused by that first failure. Save the relevant block of text rather than copying only one line; the surrounding lines identify the loader phase and the file being loaded.
Match the failure to the right repair
| Failure pattern | Evidence to confirm | Safe next action |
|---|---|---|
| Wrong loader or Minecraft version | A mod-loading message names an incompatible loader or game version. | Restore the pack’s pinned Minecraft and loader versions, then remove jars built for another loader. Forge guidance does not cover Fabric or Spigot, so use instructions for the loader actually installed. |
| Missing dependency or bad mod update | The first Caused by names a mod, API, mixin or missing class. |
On the preserved copy, reinstall the exact dependency or roll back the mod that changed. Keep its Minecraft and loader compatibility aligned with the pack. |
| Corrupt or malformed installation | Import errors, missing libraries or an invalid ZIP structure appear before normal loading. | Validate the archive and use the launcher’s repair function. Keep the old directory as the recovery source. |
| Java mismatch | The log reports an unsupported class version, an incompatible runtime or a Java startup failure. | Select the Java runtime required by that Minecraft/modpack release and verify that the launch command invokes that binary. |
| Memory exhaustion | Out-of-memory text, heap-allocation failure or exit code 137. |
Increase available memory within the host’s limit or reduce load, then retest. Do not treat an out-of-memory symptom as proof that a mod is incompatible. |
| World or data corruption | The crash occurs while loading a particular world or chunk, or follows an interrupted write. | Restore the latest known-good world backup and test the software separately before changing mods again. |
Repair loader, mod and dependency problems
Confirm the loader before touching jars
Forge, Fabric and NeoForge use different loader APIs and instructions. A jar compiled for Fabric cannot be repaired by applying a Forge-only fix, and a Forge FAQ’s advice for error codes 1 and -1 is simply to consult the log or crash report. Identify the loader from the startup banner, launch command and installed files, then use only mods and dependencies built for that loader and the exact Minecraft version.
Check the first named component
When the stack trace names a mod, API or mixin, compare its required versions with the pack manifest or the release notes supplied with the pack. A dependency can be present but still wrong: an older API, a client-only jar in a dedicated server or a file for a neighboring Minecraft release can all fail during class loading. Remove or replace only that component on the copy, restart and compare the new log.
Undo the most recent change first
If the server worked until one mod, configuration, datapack or update was added, revert that single change. Do not remove several unrelated files at once; doing so may make the server start while hiding the real incompatibility and makes the result impossible to reproduce. Keep a note of each test and its outcome.

Modpack archives must be valid ZIP files with the expected directory structure. An interrupted download, nested folder or missing library can leave a directory that looks complete but cannot launch. Compare the archive’s contents with the pack’s documented layout and check that the loader installer completed rather than merely placing a server jar.

If you use CurseForge, its support guidance recommends the Repair Installation action for common setup failures. Run it only after preserving the existing server root, because a repair can replace generated files. If the repaired installation still fails, compare its versions and mod list with the preserved copy instead of overwriting the backup.
Fix Java selection and launch settings
Use the runtime required by the pack
Minecraft releases and modpacks may require different Java generations. The Java installed on the machine is not necessarily the Java used by the server: a panel, script or service can point to another executable. Check the launch command and print the runtime it actually invokes, for example:
java -version
When several runtimes are installed, use the full path to the required executable in the startup script or host setting. Confirm the version again from the server log after restarting. An “unsupported class version” message usually means the selected runtime is too old or the jar was built for a different Java generation.
Preserve the original launch command
Copy the complete command, including loader arguments, JVM options, working directory and memory flags, into your repair notes. Changing the command while changing Java or mods makes the test ambiguous. Make one controlled change, restart, and retain the resulting log.
Separate memory failures from software incompatibility
Exit code 137 commonly means the operating system or host killed the process, often after it exceeded an available-memory limit. Out-of-memory text and heap-allocation failures point in the same direction. The code does not identify a bad mod by itself.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Check the limit that applies to the server
Compare the Java heap setting with the memory limit imposed by the host, container or service. A heap request that exceeds the host limit can be killed before Java produces a conventional crash report. Leave headroom for the operating system and other services rather than assigning every available byte to the heap.
Retest with a controlled load
On the preserved copy, reduce view or simulation load, disable a newly added resource-heavy component and start again. If the server survives, restore one change at a time and watch the log. If it still exits with code 137 at low load, the host limit or another process may be the constraint; if it changes to a mod-loading exception, return to dependency diagnosis.

Use isolation to identify one bad change
Isolation is safer than a wholesale reinstall and provides diagnostic value. After the archive is complete:
- Choose the single most likely recent change: a mod, dependency, configuration file, datapack or loader update.
- Move or disable only that item on the repair copy; do not delete it from the preserved original.
- Start the server with the same Java executable, command and memory setting.
- Compare the new console and
latest.logwith the failed attempt. - If it starts, validate the disabled component against the pack’s pinned versions and dependencies before restoring it.
- If it does not start, restore the item and test the next hypothesis.
Never delete the world as a first-line fix. A successful start after removing a mod does not prove the world is damaged; it usually indicates that the software change must be corrected or that the mod’s world data needs a compatible migration.

When the server jar, loader, libraries or pack files are corrupt, create a clean directory rather than repeatedly reinstalling over the old one. Download or rebuild the server with the exact same Minecraft and loader versions used by the world. Complete its first startup and stop it cleanly so the expected directory structure exists.

- Keep the original directory and its archive read-only while you work.
- Install the matching server software in a new directory.
- Copy the backed-up world into the new directory only after the software starts without it.
- Copy only configuration, datapack and other data files that are required and known to be compatible. Do not blindly copy every new installation file over the clean loader.
- Start with the same Java runtime and compare the logs.
- Join locally or use a test account to check spawn, inventories, dimensions, entities and recent chunks.
If the clean software fails before the world is loaded, the issue remains in Java, the loader or the mod set. If it fails only after the world is added, restore the latest known-good world backup and investigate the affected dimension or chunk without altering the original.
Choose fixes by safety and reversibility
| Approach | Data safety | Version fidelity | Diagnostic value | Reversibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Read logs and change one component | World remains untouched. | Highest, because the existing pack is retained. | High; one result maps to one hypothesis. | High; restore the component from the archive. |
| Launcher repair on a preserved copy | Original world is protected if the copy is used. | Depends on the repair restoring the same pinned release. | Moderate; missing files may be replaced in bulk. | High when the original directory is retained. |
| Clean server directory with copied world | High if the original and backup remain intact. | High only when Minecraft and loader versions exactly match. | High for separating software damage from world damage. | High; switch back to the untouched directory. |
| Deleting the world or reinstalling over the live directory | Low; recoverable evidence can be overwritten. | Uncertain. | Low, because multiple variables change. | Low unless an independent backup exists. |
Prepare a useful escalation report
If the server still fails, provide the complete context instead of a screenshot of the final line. Include:
- Minecraft, loader and loader-version numbers.
- Java version and the exact launch command.
- Allocated memory and any host or container limit.
- The complete mod list, including recently changed files.
- The newest crash report, if one exists.
logs/latest.logfrom the failed attempt and the first relevantERROR,FATAL,ExceptionorCaused by.- The last known-good state and the single change made before failure.
Remove passwords, access tokens, IP addresses and other private values before posting. Fabric recommends uploading logs to a paste service and sharing the link with the mod author or support community. Keep the original archive available so you can answer questions about files that were replaced during testing.
What a successful recovery looks like
A repair is complete when the server starts with the intended loader and Java runtime, reaches the normal ready state without recurring errors, and loads a verified copy of the world. Check the console after startup rather than stopping at the first successful launch: unresolved warnings, missing dependencies or repeated chunk errors can surface only after players connect. Once the world and key dimensions are verified, make a new backup of the repaired directory and document the working versions and launch command.
