Set it only after stopping writes and making a separate copy of the InnoDB data directory. Start at level 1, increase one level at a time only when necessary, dump every readable table into a clean MySQL instance, and then rebuild or restore from a known-good backup. Levels 4 through 6 can permanently damage data files, so never experiment with them on your only copy.

What innodb_force_recovery actually does
InnoDB normally performs crash recovery when MySQL starts: it scans redo and undo information, rolls back incomplete work, merges change-buffer entries, and performs other background cleanup. If a corrupted page, damaged index, failed disk, or unfinishable rollback prevents that process from completing, MySQL may not start normally.

innodb_force_recovery suppresses selected recovery or background operations so the server can start long enough for you to read and export data. It does not repair corrupted pages, reconstruct missing records, or make an inconsistent transaction history safe. The practical goal is a logical dump followed by a rebuild or restore into a clean instance.
Any value above 0 is an emergency mode. Writes are blocked when the value is greater than 0, and levels 4, 5, and 6 are read-only extraction modes. A larger value includes the behavior of the lower values, so escalating too quickly exposes the files to more aggressive suppression than necessary.

Choose the safest recovery path first
Forced recovery is a salvage path for a server that cannot complete ordinary startup or when a damaged table prevents a usable dump. It is not automatically the best way to recover a database. If you have a valid base backup and the required binary logs, restoring those is safer because it preserves transaction consistency and avoids operating on damaged files.
| Recovery option | Transaction consistency | Risk to original files | What can be recovered | Downtime and requirements | Can the original instance return to service? |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Normal InnoDB crash recovery | Uses InnoDB’s regular recovery process | Normal startup behavior | Data that the engine can recover normally | Wait for startup and rollback to finish | Usually, once the underlying storage problem is resolved |
| Backup restore plus point-in-time recovery | Best consistency when the backup and binary logs are valid | Does not require modifying the damaged copy | Everything present in the backup plus logged changes through the selected point | Requires an uncorrupted backup, binary logs, storage, and restore time | Build a replacement instance; do not trust the damaged instance until validated |
innodb_force_recovery and logical dump |
May omit unreadable rows and may retain unresolved transactions | Levels 4 or higher can permanently corrupt data files | Only pages and rows that remain readable | Requires a copy of the data directory and enough space for a clean instance and dump | Use the original only as evidence; return to service from a rebuilt or restored copy |
If corruption or disk failure is confirmed and a usable backup exists, restore the backup and apply subsequent binary-log events with mysqlbinlog and mysql. Use forced recovery when normal startup, crash recovery, or a clean backup route is unavailable, incomplete, or too slow to meet the incident’s needs.

Before changing the server: preserve evidence and stop damage
Stop application writes
Take the application out of service or route it away from the affected server. Stop scheduled jobs, replication actions that could write locally, import scripts, and administrative sessions that might change data. Do not run repair commands or delete files to make startup succeed.
Capture the state of the failure
- Copy the complete InnoDB-related error log and note the first corruption, assertion, or startup failure message.
- Record the MySQL version, storage-engine definitions, server configuration, and the data-directory contents and timestamps.
- List available full and incremental backups, binary logs, replicas, and their recovery points.
- Record which schemas and tables are business-critical so extraction can be prioritized if the incident worsens.
Make a separate physical copy
Take a filesystem-level copy or storage snapshot of the data directory while the instance is stopped. Work on that copy, not on the production files. Keep the original unchanged and protected. MySQL explicitly warns that values of 4 or greater can permanently corrupt data files; testing those levels on the only copy can destroy the evidence you still need to recover.
The copy must be usable by a MySQL installation of the same or a compatible version and must preserve file ownership, permissions, and the complete set of files required by the instance. If the storage itself is failing, copy it to reliable media before attempting repeated startups.

Set innodb_force_recovery one level at a time
Level 1: the first emergency attempt
Add the setting under the server section of the option file used by the instance:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →[mysqld]
innodb_force_recovery = 1
Start the copied instance and inspect its error log. Level 1 corresponds to SRV_FORCE_IGNORE_CORRUPT: InnoDB attempts to start despite detected corrupt pages and may skip corrupt index records or pages during reads.
Levels 2 and 3: suppress background work or rollback
If level 1 still fails, stop the copied instance, change the value to 2, and restart. Repeat the stop-change-start-log cycle for level 3 only if level 2 is insufficient.
| Level | Internal behavior | When it may help | Important consequence |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 | Normal startup | Use after the underlying problem is resolved and forced recovery is removed | Normal InnoDB behavior |
1 (SRV_FORCE_IGNORE_CORRUPT) |
Starts despite detected corrupt pages and attempts to skip corrupt index records or pages during reads | First emergency startup and dump attempt | Some rows or pages may be unreadable |
2 (SRV_FORCE_NO_BACKGROUND) |
Stops the master and purge threads | Background purge activity is causing exits or preventing startup | Background cleanup is disabled |
3 (SRV_FORCE_NO_TRX_UNDO) |
Skips transaction rollback after crash recovery | Runaway rollback or startup blocked by undo processing | Incomplete transactions can remain unresolved |
4 (SRV_FORCE_NO_IBUF_MERGE) |
Disables insert-buffer merges and statistics calculation; the server is read-only | Last-resort extraction after testing on a separate copy | Can permanently corrupt data files; secondary indexes may need rebuilding |
5 (SRV_FORCE_NO_UNDO_LOG_SCAN) |
Skips the undo-log scan and treats incomplete transactions as committed; read-only | Extreme extraction when lower levels cannot start the copy | Can permanently corrupt files and transaction consistency |
6 (SRV_FORCE_NO_LOG_REDO) |
Skips redo roll-forward; the server is read-only | Final, drastic extraction attempt | Pages can be obsolete and additional B-tree or structural corruption can result |
Do not jump directly to level 6. The level names describe increasingly large omissions from InnoDB’s normal recovery process, not increasing degrees of repair. Once a level starts the copy, move immediately to extraction rather than leaving the server running as an application database.
Dump readable data while the copy is online
Prefer simple reads and logical exports
Once MySQL starts, avoid writes, index-building operations, optimization jobs, and queries that need to scan damaged pages unnecessarily. Begin with schema definitions and the tables that matter most. A logical dump is the handoff artifact you can load into a clean instance.

For a targeted export, use a command in this form, replacing the account, host, and database names with those for the isolated copy:
mysqldump -u recovery_user -p --databases app_db > app_db-salvage.sql
Export individual databases or tables when an all-database dump stops at one damaged object. Include schema objects such as triggers, routines, and events when they are readable and needed by the application. Keep the dump files on separate storage and record which command produced each file.
SELECT ... INTO OUTFILE is another extraction method when the server account and filesystem permissions allow it. It can be useful for a table that must be exported independently, but it does not bypass unreadable pages and it writes files on the server host, so protect the output and verify its contents.
When a table-wide read fails
Isolate the failure rather than abandoning the entire database. Dump tables one at a time, then narrow a failing table to primary-key ranges or other known partitions. A normal ascending scan may encounter a corrupt region and stop; the MySQL manual notes that ORDER BY primary_key DESC can sometimes retrieve rows located after that region.
At high recovery levels, only basic queries such as SELECT * FROM table_name may work. Avoid assuming that a successful query proves the table is complete: skipped pages, unreadable records, and unresolved transactions can all produce an incomplete export. Keep a manifest of every table, range, and row count that was successfully dumped, failed, or not attempted.

Prioritize and verify each dump
- Export the most valuable schemas before spending time on low-priority objects.
- Check that each dump reaches its normal completion message and has nonzero, plausible size.
- Capture row counts and primary-key minimum and maximum values for readable ranges.
- Record tables that fail consistently, the error text, and the recovery level used.
- Do not treat a dump from level 5 or 6 as transactionally clean; label it for application-level reconciliation.
Special case: redo-log recovery runs out of space
If the error log shows that redo-log recovery cannot continue because it runs out of space, MySQL’s troubleshooting guidance documents trying a forced-recovery restart beginning with SRV_FORCE_NO_IBUF_MERGE (level 4). If that does not start the copy, the next documented attempt is SRV_FORCE_NO_LOG_REDO (level 6). Both are read-only, high-risk modes and must be tested on a separate copy.
If the copied instance still will not start after those attempts, stop escalating. Recovery from a known-good backup may be the only safe route. Continuing to alter the original files can turn a recoverable storage problem into permanent loss.
Remove forced recovery and rebuild a clean instance
- Stop the isolated server after all practical dumps are complete.
- Remove or comment out
innodb_force_recoveryfrom the option file. Do not leave a nonzero value in a normal production configuration. - Provision a clean MySQL instance rather than reusing the damaged data directory.
- Recreate users, character sets, collations, tables, indexes, constraints, triggers, routines, and events from known-good definitions.
- Load the logical dump into the clean instance. Load independent table exports separately when the original dump was split around corrupt objects.
- For tables or ranges that could not be dumped, restore those objects from an uncorrupted backup where possible and document any irrecoverable gaps.
MySQL’s rebuild guidance uses dump-and-reload for an InnoDB table when corruption is reported or a check causes InnoDB to fail. The rebuilt instance should be treated as a new recovery target, not as proof that the original files are repaired.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRestore a backup and apply binary logs when available
A valid base backup is preferable to salvaging a corrupted data directory. Restore it to clean storage, start the restored instance, and apply binary-log events after the backup’s position or timestamp with mysqlbinlog and mysql. Stop at the last known-good point or at a deliberately selected point in time.
This route requires you to verify that the backup is complete, readable, and from the intended server and time. Binary logs must cover the interval between the backup and the recovery target. If either the backup or required logs are missing or corrupt, use the forced-recovery dump only for the data that cannot be obtained by restore.

Validate before production cutover
A successful startup or completed dump is not a success criterion by itself. Validate the rebuilt or restored database independently of the damaged copy.
- Compare database, table, and row counts with the last trusted inventory.
- Check primary-key ranges and investigate gaps, duplicates, and unexpected jumps.
- Verify foreign-key relationships and application invariants such as balances, ownership, inventory totals, or state transitions.
- Run representative read queries, reports, and background jobs in a staging or isolated environment.
- Check that indexes and constraints exist and behave as expected after reload.
- Compare the recovered data with exports, replicas, or business records for the tables that were read at high recovery levels.
- Take a new backup of the validated instance and perform a test restore before declaring the incident closed.
There is no universal recovery percentage or completion time. Results depend on which pages are damaged, the transaction state at failure, the quality of available backups, and the binary logs that remain usable. Report those limits explicitly to stakeholders instead of presenting a partial dump as a complete database.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
Using the only copy
Failure: Setting level 4 or higher on production and losing the ability to compare or retry. Safer approach: snapshot or copy first, then perform every escalation on the copy.
Starting at level 6
Failure: Skipping redo and undo processing even though a lower level could have produced a more consistent dump. Safer approach: start at 1 and increase exactly one step after a failed startup.
Treating forced recovery as a repair
Failure: Removing the setting and returning the same files to service because MySQL started once. Safer approach: dump, rebuild or restore, validate, and cut over to the clean instance.
Dumping everything in one operation
Failure: One corrupt table aborts a full export and hides which objects were readable. Safer approach: export schemas and tables separately, maintain a manifest, and isolate failing primary-key ranges.

Quick Recap
Emergency checklist
- Stop application and administrative writes.
- Save the error log, configuration, version, storage details, and backup inventory.
- Make and protect a filesystem copy or snapshot of the data directory.
- Try
innodb_force_recovery = 1on the copy. - Increase only to 2, then 3, if startup still fails; inspect the log after each restart.
- Use levels 4 through 6 only for last-resort extraction on the copy, understanding that they are read-only and can permanently corrupt files.
- Dump readable schemas, tables, and ranges; record failures and row coverage.
- Remove forced recovery and load the dump into a clean MySQL instance.
- Prefer backup restoration plus binary-log replay for any data that can be recovered that way.
- Validate counts, ranges, relationships, application behavior, and a fresh tested backup before cutover.
