On June 6, 2018, Enhance and The Tetris Company announced Tetris Effect for PS4, targeting fall 2018 and making PlayStation VR support optional—not required. The game later launched in November 2018 and evolved into Tetris Effect: Connected, now listed for PS4 and PS5.
What Enhance announced in 2018
PlayStation Blog published the announcement under Tetsuya Mizuguchi, Enhance’s president and CEO. He described Tetris Effect as a new take on the puzzle game from many of the same people who worked on Rez Infinite and Lumines. Enhance’s announcement also credited Monstars Inc. and Resonair among the developers.

The announced release window was fall 2018 for PS4, with optional PS VR support. That wording matters: the game was not announced as a VR exclusive, and players did not need a headset to play. PlayStation Blog’s June 6, 2018 announcement gives the original platform and timing.
How Tetris Effect was meant to change familiar play
Enhance described more than 30 stages whose music, sounds, backgrounds, and effects would react to the player’s actions. The concept kept the recognizable block-stacking puzzle at its center, while presenting each stage as an audiovisual environment that responded as play unfolded. These were claims in the 2018 announcement, not a separate assessment of how every stage performed.

Modes and the Zone mechanic
The announcement named Marathon, Sprint, and Ultra as returning modes. It also introduced Zone, a mechanic that let players stop time and falling pieces. Enhance said players could use it to get out of a dangerous board state or create an opportunity to clear more lines.
What happened after the announcement
The original PS4 and PS VR game launched in November 2018. The title later expanded as Tetris Effect: Connected. In a 2023 announcement, Enhance and The Tetris Company said the PS5 and PS VR2 version would arrive on February 22, 2023. Their announcement also reported an 89 Metacritic score, more than 80 awards and nominations, and participation by over 900 players from more than 40 countries in the first Tetris Effect: Connected World Championship event; these are publisher-reported figures.

The current US PlayStation product page lists Tetris Effect: Connected for PS4 and PS5. It identifies VR2 features with the PS5 version, not the PS4 version.

What Connected adds for different play styles
The current PlayStation listing distinguishes solo Journey Mode from Connected’s cooperative and competitive multiplayer. If the draw is the original solo puzzle experience, Journey Mode is the relevant option; if you want to play with or against others, look to Connected’s multiplayer offering. The original 2018 announcement focused on the single-player game and its modes, so its fall release details should not be confused with the later Connected edition.

Physical PS4 copies
A physical PS4 disc of Tetris Effect: Connected was released through a Limited Run Games collaboration. Limited Run Games describes that disc as region-free and compatible with PS5. This is a later Connected release, not evidence that the exact 2018 edition is currently available from a particular marketplace or in stock. Limited Run Games’ product page has the disc details; check the seller’s live listing for current availability.
