What you need before attempting a recruitment
Recruitment is tied to mask progression rather than being an option available from the beginning. Community guidance says both Deter and Recruit must be repaired through the mask progression system before you try to capture an NPC. The exact unlock level and green-crystal cost can differ between game versions and server configurations, so check the nodes on your current mask instead of relying on an older cost.
Deter is the ability that converts a weakened enemy into an unconscious potential recruit. Recruit is the follow-up ability that lets you complete the conversion after recognition has reached the required value. If either node is still locked, you may be able to damage an NPC but will not get the complete recruitment interaction.

Which NPCs can become tribesmen?
The recruitment method described here works on several ordinary hostile groups, but not every NPC in the world is a valid target. The Soulmask Wiki identifies the following eligible categories and exclusions:
| NPC type | Recruitable with Deter? | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Outcasts | Yes | Can be weakened until the Deter interaction appears. |
| Barbarians | Yes | Can be captured and converted after recognition rises. |
| Regular enemy tribesmen | Yes | Use the same low-health, unconsciousness and recognition process. |
| Scouts | No | Deter cannot be used to recruit them. |
| Plunderers | No | Excluded from this deterrence-based method. |
| Tribe leaders | No | They cannot be recruited through Deter. |
When choosing between valid targets, look beyond the fact that an NPC can join. Traits, skills and suitability for the role you need will affect how useful that tribesman is after recruitment. No published data establishes a universal success rate, average recruitment time or fixed distribution of recruit traits, so treat a promising skill set as a selection consideration rather than a guarantee of performance.
How low must an NPC’s health be?
Lower the target’s health until the Deter interaction appears. Guides commonly place the trigger at roughly 10–20 percent health, but that range is a practical rule of thumb, not a guaranteed value for every current build. Damage values, difficulty, patches and server settings can all affect when the prompt appears.
Stop attacking as soon as the interaction is available. A final hit can kill the NPC, and a dead target cannot be deterred or recruited. If the prompt does not appear, reduce health gradually rather than using another heavy attack and risking an accidental kill.
Step-by-step: capture and recruit a tribesman
- Repair Deter and Recruit. Open your mask progression and confirm that both abilities are repaired. If a node is unavailable, finish the prerequisite progression and gather the required resources shown by your current server.
- Find a valid target. Select an outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman. Do not spend time trying this method on a scout, plunderer or tribe leader; those categories are excluded.
- Weaken the NPC carefully. Bring the target down to very low health, commonly around 10–20 percent. Leave enough margin to avoid a killing blow from your next attack or a damage-over-time effect.
- Use Deter. With the target at the trigger health, press the interact key. The Wiki reference uses E as the default interaction key, although custom controls can change it. Choose the Deter interaction when it appears. The NPC becomes unconscious and starts gaining recognition.
- Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory. Interact with the downed tribesman and place a healing item, such as bandages, in the inventory. A living unconscious NPC is the central requirement for the waiting period; an unhealed target can die before recruitment becomes available.
- Supply liquid food when necessary. Broth and other liquid food can be placed in the NPC’s inventory and used manually. Feeding may be necessary to prevent starvation while the tribesman remains unconscious. Do not assume that knocking the NPC out removes the need to manage food.
- Move the NPC to a safer location if needed. The Wiki says a still-unconscious, deterred NPC can be carried over your shoulder or transported on a llama fitted with an extended seat. A base or flame altar is a practical place to supervise the process, and community guidance describes proximity to one as useful while recognition rises.
- Wait for recognition to reach the requirement. The Soulmask Wiki reports a default minimum of 500 recognition. A Steam Community answer shows the requirement as 500/1000, so use the value displayed by your current interface and server. Keep checking the NPC’s status rather than assuming that a fixed number of minutes has passed.
- Interact again and recruit. Once the recognition requirement is satisfied, interact with the unconscious tribesman and choose the Recruit option. If the option is still absent, work through the troubleshooting checks below before moving or attacking the NPC again.
Keeping an unconscious tribesman alive
Heal damage before waiting
Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory and provide bandages or another healing item. The purpose is not to make the target fight again; it is to prevent the captured NPC from dying during the recognition period. Check health after combat and after relocating the NPC, because transport and surrounding enemies can create additional risk.
Use broth or another liquid food manually
Liquid food such as broth can be placed in the unconscious NPC’s inventory and used manually. This matters when the NPC’s hunger is falling while recognition is still below the threshold. If the tribesman dies from neglect, the recruitment attempt ends and you must find another eligible target.

Guard the area from roaming enemies, avoid leaving the NPC in an active combat route and place the capture somewhere you can revisit. A secure base or flame-altar area reduces the chance that a second fight kills the target while you are waiting.
Why recognition matters
Deter does not immediately add the NPC to your tribe. It creates an unconscious recruit candidate whose recognition increases while you care for them. Recognition is therefore a progress value, not a measure of the damage you dealt.
The default minimum reported by the Soulmask Wiki is 500. A Steam Community answer presents the value as 500/1000, which may reflect a different display, build or server configuration. Use the number and progress indicator shown in your own game as the authoritative check. When the threshold is reached, the Recruit interaction should appear on the unconscious NPC.
Troubleshooting: no Recruit option appears
The NPC is still conscious
Deter must successfully trigger first. Lower health until the interaction appears and use Deter; ordinary damage, a stun or a temporary knockdown does not substitute for the deterrence state.

The target is the wrong NPC type
Scouts, plunderers and tribe leaders are not valid targets for this method. Move on to an outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman instead.
Deter or Recruit has not been repaired
Reopen mask progression and verify both nodes. If the nodes are locked, the interaction will not complete even if you can weaken an otherwise eligible NPC.
Health was reduced too far
A dead NPC cannot be recruited. Approach the next target with lighter attacks near the 10–20 percent rule-of-thumb range, and stop applying damage as soon as Deter is available.
Recognition is below the current requirement
Continue healing and feeding the NPC, then check the displayed recognition value again. Do not treat 500 as an unconditional universal value when your interface shows a different denominator or threshold.

The interaction key is not E
The Wiki reference uses E as the default interact key. If you changed controls, use your custom interaction binding instead and confirm that you are targeting the NPC rather than a nearby object.
Tribesman capacity and what recruits do
Your mask’s control capacity limits how many tribesmen you can keep. The Soulmask Wiki reports the following progression values:
| Mask progression state | Reported tribesman capacity |
|---|---|
| Repaired Control node at the starting state | 3 tribesmen |
| Connection Enhancement fully upgraded | 18 tribesmen |
These figures are progression-sensitive and may be modified by server settings. If a successful recruitment does not increase your roster, check the current control limit and whether your server has altered progression.
After joining, tribesmen can follow you, assist in combat, defend the base and work at crafting or production stations. The official Steam listing describes automated work and command systems as core features, so recruitment is both a population system and a way to staff your settlement. Select recruits according to the tasks you actually need: a useful skill or trait can matter more than simply filling an available slot.
Choosing a recruitment approach
Deterrence is the clearly defined, repeatable procedure: weaken a valid NPC, knock them unconscious, maintain their health and food, then recruit at the recognition threshold. Other circumstances may present incidental or scenario-specific opportunities, but the available mechanics guidance does not establish a universal alternative procedure with its own requirements.
Use these decision criteria when deciding whether an attempt is worth the risk:
- Reliability: Deter gives you a known sequence and a visible interaction; an incidental opportunity depends on the specific situation.
- Time: A deterred NPC must remain alive while recognition rises, so the process takes longer than simply defeating an enemy.
- Risk: Every additional minute creates exposure to damage, hunger and accidental death.
- Recruit quality: Check traits, skills and role suitability before committing a valuable mask slot.
- Capacity: Confirm that your Control and Connection Enhancement progression still has room for another tribesman.
Planning a safer capture
Preparation makes the low-health phase much less dangerous. Bring the healing items and liquid food before engaging the target, rather than searching storage after Deter has succeeded. Decide where the NPC will be held and clear nearby enemies first. This avoids carrying an unconscious recruit through an active fight while its health and hunger are already vulnerable.
Use controlled damage near the end of the fight. Heavy attacks, damage-over-time effects and stray hits from companions can kill a target before the Deter prompt appears. Once health is in the approximate 10–20 percent range, stop attacking between checks and look for the interaction. If the prompt is missing, use a small additional hit and check again instead of repeating a full combo.
Have a relocation plan. A deterred NPC can be carried over your shoulder, or moved with a llama using an extended seat. Carrying is useful when the capture happens far from home; the llama option is useful when distance or terrain makes a shoulder carry impractical. Either way, move only after confirming the NPC is unconscious and supplied, and check its condition after arrival.
Managing the recognition wait
Recognition is the part of recruitment that rewards supervision rather than more combat. Keep the candidate in a place you can revisit, preferably near your base or flame altar. Community guidance associates that proximity with recognition progress, while the mechanics guidance confirms that recognition rises as the unconscious NPC is cared for.
Check the status periodically instead of relying on an assumed timer. There is no verified universal average time for reaching the threshold, and server settings or patches can change how quickly progress appears. If recognition stops short of the displayed requirement, continue the care cycle: restore health, provide liquid food when needed and remove threats that could interrupt the process.
Do not spend a valuable mask slot mentally before the process is complete. Until the Recruit interaction is accepted, the NPC remains a vulnerable candidate rather than a permanent tribesman. If the candidate dies, the recognition progress does not turn into a replacement recruit; you must begin again with another eligible NPC.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Capacity, role selection and timing
Capacity should influence whom you capture and when. With only three slots at the initial repaired Control-node state, recruiting the first available NPC can prevent a more suitable worker or fighter from joining later. Fully upgrading Connection Enhancement is reported to raise the limit to 18, but that figure is not guaranteed on every server. Check your roster before beginning a long recognition wait.
Review a candidate’s traits and skills when you have a choice between several valid outcasts, barbarians or regular tribesmen. A recruit who fits a needed crafting or production role may provide more value than one chosen solely for convenience. Conversely, a combat-oriented candidate may be preferable if your immediate problem is base defense or field assistance. The game does not publish a universal ranking of traits, so make the decision against your own settlement’s needs.

Co-op and private-server considerations
The official Steam listing supports co-op play and private servers. Multiplayer can therefore change the practical cost of a recruitment attempt even though the Deter-to-Recruit sequence remains the same. Coordinate who watches the unconscious NPC, who supplies healing items and who handles nearby threats. On a private server, administrators may also use settings that alter mask progression, recognition displays or capacity, so read the values shown in that server rather than importing assumptions from a default game.
Common planning mistakes
- Starting without both mask nodes: Repair Deter and Recruit first; otherwise a successful knockdown may never become a completed recruitment.
- Targeting an excluded NPC: Scouts, plunderers and tribe leaders cannot be recruited through this method.
- Using a fixed health number: Treat 10–20 percent as a guide for finding the prompt, not as an exact universal trigger.
- Leaving food in the wrong state: Broth or other liquid food may need to be used manually from the NPC’s inventory.
- Ignoring the roster limit: Verify available Control and Connection Enhancement capacity before investing time in recognition.
- Assuming 500 applies everywhere: Compare the Wiki’s default 500 minimum with the value and denominator displayed by your current build.
Version and server-setting cautions
Several numbers commonly quoted in recruitment guides are not immutable rules. The 10–20 percent health trigger is an observed range, the default recognition minimum is reported as 500, another community display shows 500/1000, and the capacity figures are tied to mask progression. Key bindings can also be customized, with E applying only to the default interaction setup described by the Wiki.
Before planning a difficult capture, inspect the prompts and values in your current build. A patch or server configuration can alter mask costs, interaction thresholds, recognition displays or roster limits without changing the overall Deter-to-Recruit concept.
Quick capture checklist
- Deter and Recruit are repaired on your mask.
- The target is an outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman.
- Health is low enough for Deter, but the NPC is still alive.
- You have bandages or another healing item ready.
- You have broth or other liquid food available if hunger becomes an issue.
- The capture location is safe, preferably near your base or flame altar.
- You know how to carry the NPC or use a llama with an extended seat if relocation is necessary.
- You have spare tribesman capacity under your current Control and Connection Enhancement progression.
- You have checked the recognition value displayed by your current server.
The result
Recruitment in Soulmask is a care-and-recognition process, not an instant capture. Repair Deter and Recruit, choose an eligible NPC, lower health until Deter appears, keep the unconscious tribesman healed and fed, and wait for the recognition threshold shown in your game. Once that value is met, the Recruit interaction completes the conversion and the new tribesman can follow, defend or work for your tribe.

The official Steam announcement summarizes the system as: “By intimidating the wild barbarians, you can absorb them into your tribe.” In practice, the intimidation is only the beginning; survival management and recognition are what turn a defeated NPC into a permanent member of your settlement.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I recruit tribesmen in Soulmask?
Repair Deter and Recruit, weaken an eligible outcast, barbarian or regular enemy tribesman until Deter appears, use it to knock the NPC unconscious, then keep the NPC healed and fed while recognition rises. Interact again and choose Recruit when the displayed recognition requirement is met.
Why is there no Recruit option after I knock someone out?
A normal knockdown is not enough. The NPC must be deterred with the Deter interaction, both mask abilities must be repaired, the target must be an eligible type, and recognition must reach the current threshold. Also check that the NPC is still alive and that your interaction key is correctly bound.
What recognition level is required?
The Soulmask Wiki reports a default minimum of 500 recognition. A Steam Community answer displays 500/1000, so patches and server settings can change the denominator or requirement. Treat the value shown in your current interface as authoritative.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I feed an unconscious tribesman?
Open the unconscious NPC’s inventory, place broth or another liquid food inside and use it manually when necessary. Keep healing items such as bandages there as well, because hunger and untreated damage can kill the candidate before recognition is complete.
Which NPCs can I recruit?
Outcasts, barbarians and regular enemy tribesmen are listed as recruitable through Deter. Scouts cannot be deterred for recruitment, and plunderers and tribe leaders are excluded from this method.
Can I move a deterred NPC to my base?
Yes. A still-unconscious deterred NPC can be carried over your shoulder or transported on a llama fitted with an extended seat. Move the candidate away from combat and continue care near your base or flame altar.
How many tribesmen can I have?
The reported starting capacity after repairing the Control node is three tribesmen. Fully upgrading Connection Enhancement is reported to raise the cap to 18, although server settings and progression changes can modify those values.
What can recruited tribesmen do?
They can follow and assist you, defend the base and work at crafting or production stations. Their traits and skills should guide your choice when you have more than one eligible candidate.
The Bottom Line
Repair Deter and Recruit, weaken an eligible NPC without killing it, keep the unconscious candidate healed and fed, and wait for the recognition value shown by your current server. Recruitment completes only when that threshold is reached and the Recruit interaction appears.
