Ender Pearls are throwable teleportation items. The reliable renewable source is killing Endermen, while expert clerics, Nether piglin bartering, and certain structure chests provide alternatives. Hold a pearl and use it to teleport to the point where it lands, but account for teleport damage, the brief use cooldown, and the possibility of an unsafe landing. Combine a pearl with blaze powder to make an Eye of Ender for stronghold and End progression.

What an Ender Pearl does
An Ender Pearl is a throwable item that moves through the world as a projectile. When it hits a landing point, the player who threw it is teleported there. Mojang’s official explanation is simple: “To use an Ender pearl, just hold it in your hand and press the use button.” The exact key or button depends on your platform and control settings.

- The teleport follows the projectile’s impact point rather than the point where you started aiming.
- Using one can hurt the thrower, and there is a short use cooldown before another throw.
- Combining a pearl with blaze powder produces an Eye of Ender, which is used to locate a stronghold and activate the End portal.
Because the pearl uses a physical landing point, it is both a travel tool and an emergency movement option. A throw can cross a gap, reach a high ledge, escape a fall, or put you on an End tower, but a poor aim can send you into lava, the void, or an inaccessible cave.
Every reliable way to get Ender Pearls
| Method | Where it works | Cost or requirement | Yield and availability | Main risk or limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kill Endermen | Overworld, Nether, or End | Combat; Looting improves drops | 50% base chance for one pearl per Enderman; Looting adds one pearl per level, up to four with Looting III | Endermen become dangerous when directly looked at; combat remains risky without cover |
| Trade with a cleric | Villages | Reach expert trading level and pay emeralds | Java: two-thirds chance of an offer of one pearl for five emeralds; Bedrock: the cited table lists one pearl for five emeralds from an expert cleric | Offers and values can be edition- and version-sensitive |
| Barter with piglins | Nether | Give adult piglins gold ingots; wear at least one gold armor piece to reduce normal piglin hostility | 4.27% chance of receiving three to four pearls in the cited table | Low chance per barter and Nether hazards; piglin behavior depends on the situation |
| Loot structures | Strongholds, trial chambers, and a woodland-mansion fake-end-portal room | Find and open the relevant chests | Can contain pearls; exact percentages vary by current edition table and are not established here | Chests are finite and exploration can be dangerous |
There is no single best method for every world. Endermen are the dependable renewable route once you can fight them safely. A cleric can turn an established emerald economy into a predictable supply, while piglin bartering is useful when you already have surplus gold. Chest loot is opportunistic rather than a repeatable farm.

Getting pearls from Endermen
Drop rate and Looting
The cited item reference gives each Enderman a 50% base chance to drop one Ender Pearl. Looting adds one pearl to the possible drop for each level, with Looting III allowing up to four pearls from a single Enderman. The 50% figure is a base drop chance, not a guarantee for every kill; some Endermen will drop nothing.
A safer fighting setup
Endermen are hostile when you look directly at them. A practical tactic is to fight from beneath a roof that is two blocks high. You can stand under the cover while the taller Enderman cannot reach you, reducing the need to stare at its face during the fight. This is standard gameplay advice, not a measured guarantee: terrain, other mobs, and accidental exposure can still make the encounter dangerous.
- Build or use a solid overhead shelter with only two blocks of vertical clearance.
- Keep the opening wide enough to hit the Enderman while remaining under cover.
- Attract one Enderman at a time when possible, and avoid looking at additional Endermen.
- Collect the pearl after the kill and retreat under cover before checking your surroundings.
- If you have Looting, use that weapon for the final hit to improve the possible yield.
Do not treat a single failed drop as evidence that the method is broken; the base chance means an individual kill can produce zero pearls. A covered combat area and repeated kills are more dependable than trying to fight several Endermen in open terrain.
Trading with a cleric
Clerics are the most controllable alternative when your settlement produces emeralds. Level a cleric through its trade progression until it becomes an expert, then check the pearl trade. The cited table reports a two-thirds chance that a Java expert cleric offers one pearl for five emeralds. For Bedrock, that table lists an expert cleric selling one pearl for five emeralds.
Those values are edition- and version-sensitive. If the trade does not appear, verify that the villager is actually a cleric, has reached expert level, and is using the current trade table for your edition. Do not assume that a Java offer probability applies unchanged to Bedrock, or that a future release will preserve either table.

Practical trading sequence
- Secure a villager and assign the cleric profession with a brewing stand.
- Complete lower-level cleric trades until the villager reaches expert.
- Inspect the expert trades for the Ender Pearl offer.
- Spend five emeralds for each pearl when the offer is available, while watching the villager’s trade stock and restocking conditions.
This route exchanges an established emerald supply for pearls and avoids Enderman combat. It is especially attractive in a long-running base where villagers are already protected and supplied.

Bartering with Nether piglins
Adult piglins accept gold ingots and return a random barter reward. The cited loot table gives a 4.27% chance of receiving three to four Ender Pearls from a barter. That is a chance per barter, not a promise that a fixed number of gold ingots will produce pearls.
Microsoft’s piglin documentation notes that piglins barter with players wearing gold. Put on at least one gold armor piece before entering a normal piglin area to reduce their ordinary hostility. This does not remove every Nether danger: other mobs, open lava, and situations that anger piglins can still threaten you.
- Equip at least one gold armor piece.
- Bring gold ingots, not gold nuggets, for the barter interaction.
- Use a protected trading spot where the piglin cannot wander into lava or attack you.
- Give an ingot to an adult piglin and wait for its reward.
- Repeat only if the expected risk and gold cost fit your expedition; the 4.27% pearl result is uncommon.
Piglin bartering is a useful supplementary source when Nether travel and gold mining are already part of your progression. It is not a dependable replacement for a sustained Enderman or cleric supply if pearls are your only objective.
Finding pearls in structure chests
Stronghold and trial-chamber chests can contain Ender Pearls. The cited item reference also lists a trapped chest in a woodland-mansion fake-end-portal room as a possible source. These are exploration finds, not renewable production. The available evidence does not establish one universal percentage for each chest, so use the current loot table for your Minecraft edition before relying on a precise probability.

Chest hunting makes sense when you are already exploring for a stronghold, trial chamber, or woodland mansion. It is a poor reason by itself to enter a dangerous structure if you need a large, repeatable stockpile.
How to use an Ender Pearl
Basic throw
- Place the Ender Pearl on your hotbar and select it.
- Aim at a solid, reachable surface where you want to arrive.
- Press the platform’s use button to throw it.
- Wait for the projectile to strike; the game teleports you to its impact point.
- After teleporting, account for the short cooldown before attempting another throw.
The official control instruction is to hold the pearl and press use. On a keyboard, controller, or touchscreen, the action is whatever your current Minecraft control menu assigns to use or place. If nothing happens, confirm that the pearl is selected and that you are pressing the use control rather than attack.
What makes a landing safe
- Aim for a visible block with enough room for your player to stand.
- Prefer a broad surface over a narrow edge; a slight miss can place you somewhere lethal.
- Do not throw toward the void, lava, or an unexplored hole.
- Carry a spare pearl, but do not throw repeatedly without checking the cooldown.
- Expect teleport damage after a successful throw and keep enough health for it.
A pearl does not make an unsafe destination safe. It can move you onto a ledge but also into a wall, a cave, or a mob-filled area. The projectile’s landing location determines the result, so line up the destination rather than merely the direction.
Using pearls in the Nether, Overworld, and End
Overworld travel
In ordinary terrain, pearls are useful for crossing ravines, reaching cliffs, and escaping a dangerous position. Use a clear target and leave yourself a route away from the destination. A throw across a gap is only worthwhile when the far side is visible and solid.
Recommended Free Tools
Nether travel
The Nether adds lava, fire, and hostile mobs to every teleport decision. Do not throw at a distant platform unless you can identify the complete landing area. A protected ledge is preferable to an attractive but narrow block above lava. Gold armor helps with normal piglin hostility for bartering, but it does not protect against the teleport damage or the environment.
Rank #4
The End
In the End, pearls can reach the tops of End towers and provide emergency recovery after knockback or a fall. The Ender Dragon tutorial specifically recommends pearls for tower access and emergency recovery. Aim at a tower surface or other confirmed block, and keep an extra pearl available for a recovery throw. A miss in the End can mean a fall into the void, so never throw toward a silhouette whose landing block you cannot see.
Crafting Eyes of Ender for progression
An Ender Pearl becomes a progression item when combined with blaze powder. Place one pearl and one blaze powder together in the crafting grid to make an Eye of Ender. Eyes are central to finding a stronghold and entering the End: you use them to guide your search, then use the required Eyes to activate the End portal.
- Obtain blaze powder from blaze-related Nether progression and keep your Ender Pearls.
- Combine one Ender Pearl with one blaze powder in the crafting grid.
- Use the resulting Eye of Ender to locate the stronghold according to your edition’s normal controls.
- Reserve enough Eyes for the portal activation rather than spending your entire stock while searching.
A Pearson Minecraft guide sample describes pearls as obtainable by trading or defeating Endermen and identifies them as ingredients needed for Eyes of Ender. That makes pearls relevant even after you stop using them for travel: they are part of the route from Nether preparation to the stronghold and End.

The clearest documented difference in this material is cleric trading. The cited table gives Java expert clerics a two-thirds chance to offer one pearl for five emeralds, while its Bedrock entry lists one pearl for five emeralds from an expert cleric. Treat both as edition- and release-sensitive values, not permanent guarantees.
Technical projectile behavior can also change between releases. Mojang’s Java snapshot 24w37a notes that thrown pearls load and tick chunks and continue across dimensions in that snapshot. That note applies to the named snapshot; it should not be presented as universal behavior for every Java release or for Bedrock. Before building a technical contraption around pearl chunk loading or cross-dimension behavior, check the documentation and changelog for the exact version you are playing.

Choosing the right acquisition method
| Your situation | Most practical first option | Why | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| You are early in progression and can fight safely | Endermen | No emerald or gold input is required, and the source is renewable | Use cover; the base drop is only 50% |
| You have a protected village and emerald income | Expert cleric | Converts emeralds into a predictable trade when the offer exists | Java and Bedrock trade availability differs |
| You are mining gold in the Nether | Piglin barter | Uses surplus gold while you are already in the Nether | Pearls appear only 4.27% of the time in the cited table |
| You are already exploring major structures | Chest loot | May provide pearls without a dedicated farm or trade setup | Finite, location-dependent, and percentage varies by loot table |
| You need pearls for the stronghold and End | Combine all available sources | Combat, trading, bartering, and exploration can supplement one another | Keep enough pearls for Eyes of Ender before using them for risky travel |
Common failures and how to recover
The pearl did not drop
A 50% base chance means a kill can produce no pearl. Continue hunting or switch to a cleric, piglin, or chest source. Looting improves the possible yield but does not turn every kill into a guaranteed drop.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe throw caused damage
Teleport damage is a documented part of pearl use. Heal before another throw, especially when your destination is already dangerous. Do not spend your last health points on a marginal shortcut.
You arrived somewhere trapped or hostile
Use the cooldown window to orient yourself, then place blocks, retreat, or use a second pearl only after confirming a safe destination. A spare pearl is an emergency tool, not a reason to throw blindly.
The cleric does not sell pearls
Check the villager’s profession and expert level, then verify whether your edition’s current trade table includes the offer. The Java chance and Bedrock listing cited above are not interchangeable.
Piglins attack during a barter trip
Confirm that you are wearing at least one gold armor piece and that no other action has provoked nearby piglins. Move the interaction into a protected area before offering more gold.
