This guide explains how to identify the code, redeem it without attaching it to the wrong account, confirm the entitlement, and recover from the common “invalid,” “already used,” and missing-game errors. Choose the redemption route before entering the code
A code’s name, source, and title determine where it belongs. Entering a valid key on the wrong service can produce an “invalid” message even when the characters are correct. Do not buy another key or repeatedly test the same code until you know which account and store the offer names.

What “free” means in this process
Redeeming a free game code does not require buying a controller, headset, physical manual, replacement part, or another accessory. The code itself and the account or store named by the offer are the only things needed to complete the digital redemption. If an offer is legitimate, its instructions should identify the title, platform, and redemption destination.
A free code may come from an in-person event, a streaming event, a giveaway, or Bethesda directly. Those are possible distribution channels, not a promise that a game is currently being offered. Treat unsolicited pages that demand payment, a password, or an authentication code as unrelated to the normal redemption process. Use the original event message, receipt, or Bethesda page to determine the destination.
Prepare the account and code
Do these checks before opening a redemption page:
- Read the email, event page, receipt, or giveaway message that supplied the code. It may name Bethesda.net, Steam, PlayStation, Xbox, Epic, ESO, or another destination.
- Decide which account should permanently own the entitlement. Digital codes normally bind to the account used for the successful redemption and cannot be moved simply by signing out later.
- Have access to the email address on the Bethesda.net account. Bethesda may send additional instructions for a game or content code after redemption.
- If the route is Steam, sign in to the Steam account that should own the game before activating the product.
- Copy the complete code, including every dash. Remove accidental spaces at the beginning or end, but do not remove separators that are part of the code.
- Keep the original message, receipt, order number, or event details. They establish where the code came from if support or a retailer must investigate it.
- If you received the key from another person or a reseller, keep the purchase record. A code already registered to another account cannot be registered again; the retailer is the appropriate contact for a second-hand or retailer-supplied key.
- Close duplicate browser tabs or store sessions that are signed in to different accounts. A browser can silently reuse the wrong Bethesda.net account, and the Steam client can remain logged in to a different profile than the one you intended.
Redeem a Bethesda promotional code on Bethesda.net
Use this procedure for a code explicitly described as a Bethesda promotional code or one that the offer directs to Bethesda.net. Bethesda’s official walkthrough is the promotional-code redemption page.
- Open Bethesda.net and sign in. Use the account that should receive the game, add-on, or reward. If you do not have an account, create one and verify that its email address is accessible.
- Open Account Management. Select your account username, then choose Account Management.
- Choose “Redeem Code.” This is the Bethesda.net entry point for promotional codes. Do not use a retired Bethesda launcher as a substitute for the account page.
- Enter the code exactly. Preserve all dashes, type each character carefully, and check that no leading or trailing space was pasted into the field.
- Select “Redeem.” Wait for the page to process the code rather than submitting it repeatedly.
- Look for “Success!” That confirmation means Bethesda accepted the code on that account. Check the account’s email as well, because Bethesda may send title-specific or content-specific next steps.
If the redeemed reward is not visible in the game
For an in-game reward that does not appear immediately, fully exit the game and restart it. Bethesda lists a complete restart as the first remedy for a redeemed reward that has not populated. If the confirmation email names a separate activation or account-linking step, follow that instruction before contacting support. A restart is different from merely returning to the title’s main menu; close the game completely, then launch it again while signed in to the account that received the reward.
Activate most unused Bethesda game keys in Steam
Bethesda’s support guidance records May 11, 2022 as the migration point after which most unused Bethesda keys and codes should be redeemed through Steam. This is the normal route for a Bethesda PC game key that is not specifically labeled as a Bethesda.net promotional code.
- Locate the Steam key. Check the purchase or offer confirmation email, receipt, or message that delivered the key. If the message names another platform, follow that platform instead of assuming it is a Steam product.
- Sign in to the intended Steam account. Confirm the account before entering the key; the resulting license belongs to the account that completes activation.
- Open the product activation menu. In the Steam client, select Games → Activate a Product on Steam…
- Follow Steam’s prompts. Accept the product-activation flow and enter the complete key, retaining its dashes and matching every character.
- Finish activation and check the Library. Bethesda states that a successfully activated game is added to the Steam Library. Search the Library while still signed in to the same account used in step 2.
If a promotional code fails on Bethesda.net, Bethesda advises trying Steam when the code is the type that belongs there. That advice does not turn every Bethesda.net reward into a Steam key; the code’s source and title instructions remain decisive. A code that names a console or Epic edition should not be entered into Steam merely because it resembles another product key.

Confirm the Steam result
Use the Library search rather than relying on a desktop shortcut or a recent-games list. The game may not be installed yet, but a successful activation should make the title available in the Library of the activating account. If it is absent, check the account profile and purchase history before trying the key again. Re-entering a key on a second Steam account cannot transfer the license and can obscure which account first accepted it.

The Elder Scrolls Online is the clearest reason not to apply a universal Bethesda recipe. Bethesda’s support material notes that ESO may use an ESO account and its own redemption flow. A code supplied for ESO, a console edition, or another title-specific service should be redeemed through the account or store named by that offer.
- Read the title name and platform wording before choosing Bethesda.net or Steam.
- Use the title’s account credentials if the instructions identify a separate account system.
- Do not treat a successful Bethesda.net confirmation as proof that an ESO entitlement has been attached to the correct ESO account unless the title instructions say so.
- If the title instructions conflict with a generic code format, follow the title-specific instructions and contact Bethesda Support with the code source and exact error.
Title-specific instructions can also describe a required account link or a separate location where the entitlement appears. Keep that page or email open while redeeming, and do not substitute a general Bethesda.net procedure simply because the code was issued by Bethesda.
Why a code can be valid but rejected
It was entered on the wrong platform
The most common explanation for an “invalid” message is a destination mismatch. Bethesda says most unused game keys moved to Steam redemption after the migration, while certain promotional codes remain redeemable on Bethesda.net. Return to the offer or receipt, identify the intended service, and try the correct route once. For a promotional code that does not work on Bethesda.net, try Steam only when the offer is a game key that fits Steam’s activation flow.
The key has already been used
Bethesda explains that a previously redeemed code is no longer valid for another activation. Search the purchase history and Library on the account that may have redeemed it originally. If the title is present there, sign in to that account rather than submitting the same key to a second account. A used-code message does not mean the game is missing; it can mean the entitlement is already attached to a different profile.

You are signed in to the wrong account
A valid redemption can appear to vanish when the browser or Steam client is using a different account from the one intended. Sign out, sign back in to the correct Bethesda.net or Steam account, and check its purchase history or Library. Bethesda specifically recommends verifying the account when a title is missing from purchase history or downloads. Check the email address and account name, not just a familiar display name, because several profiles can have similar names.

The code came from another person or a retailer
A code registered to another account cannot be registered again. This is different from a typing error or a temporary service problem. Preserve the receipt, order number, or giveaway message and contact the retailer or distributor that supplied the key. Bethesda Support cannot make a used code unused for a new account.
The promotional code still fails after the platform check
Confirm the exact characters, dashes, and account, then test only the service indicated by the offer. If the promotional code still cannot be redeemed on the recommended services, Bethesda directs users to Bethesda Customer Support. Include the code’s source, title, platform, the account email (without sending a password), and the exact error message.
The code was copied with an extra character
Leading spaces, trailing spaces, omitted dashes, and characters that look alike can all cause a rejection. Paste into a plain text field first if necessary, inspect the beginning and end, and then enter the cleaned code in the official redemption form. Do not alter the code’s internal separators or substitute a visually similar character. If the code is printed, compare each group carefully before submitting.
Use code-format clues without treating them as proof
Format can help you spot a likely mismatch, but it cannot replace the source instructions. Bethesda’s reasons-a-game-code-may-be-invalid article gives these general clues:

Never paste a code into an unrelated website to “test” its validity. Use the official account or store named by the source, and keep the original message in case support or the retailer needs to verify ownership. A format clue can suggest the next page to read, but it cannot establish entitlement, region, title, or whether the key has already been claimed.
What the Bethesda launcher closure changes
Bethesda’s launcher closure did not eliminate Bethesda.net accounts. The company’s account guidance says those accounts remain necessary for live titles such as Fallout 76 and for other Bethesda services. The relevant support explanation is available at Bethesda.net account after launcher closure.

The practical consequence is simple: keep using the Bethesda.net account page for codes that Bethesda identifies as promotional Bethesda.net codes, but do not look for a retired launcher workflow when activating an unused game key. Most such keys belong in Steam under the migration guidance. The account still matters even when the launcher does not: it may hold live-game access, support history, or a promotional entitlement.
Check the result without creating a second entitlement
- Write down which email address or account name you used before trying another service.
- For Bethesda.net redemptions, retain the “Success!” confirmation and check the associated email for additional instructions.
- For Steam activations, remain signed in to the same Steam account and search its Library for the game title.
- For ESO or another title-specific code, verify the entitlement in the account named by that title’s instructions.
- If the title is missing, check the account and purchase history before submitting the key again. Repeated attempts on different accounts can make a used-code problem harder to diagnose.
- Record the date, approximate time, and destination used. This small note helps distinguish a platform error from an account mismatch if you need assistance later.
When to contact support and what to include
Contact Bethesda Support after you have identified the platform, checked the account, entered the code exactly once on the recommended service, and confirmed that the key was not already redeemed. A concise support request should contain:
- The game or content title and the platform named by the offer.
- Where the code came from, such as an event, stream, giveaway, purchase confirmation, or retailer.
- The Bethesda.net or Steam account name or email involved, without sharing a password or authentication code.
- The exact on-screen error, including whether it says invalid, already used, or simply shows no entitlement.
- The date and approximate time of the attempt, plus screenshots that hide the full code if an image is necessary.
For a second-hand or retailer-supplied code that reports as used, contact the seller first because the code may already be bound to another account. For an official promotional code that fails on the recommended services, use Bethesda’s support channel rather than purchasing another key. Never publish the complete code in a public forum or attach an uncensored image of it.

Why does my Bethesda code say invalid?
