To redeem a Nintendo eShop game code on a Nintendo Switch, connect the console to the internet, open Nintendo eShop from HOME, select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game, choose the code-entry option, enter the 16-character download code, and confirm. The game icon should then appear on HOME with a download indicator.
The most important decision comes before you type anything: Nintendo assigns the code to the Nintendo Account linked to the user you select. Check that profile, the code’s region, and the product’s platform before confirming.

What you need before entering the code
Have these ready before opening Nintendo eShop:
- A Nintendo Switch connected to the internet.
- The complete 16-character Nintendo download code, usually printed on a retailer receipt or card.
- A Switch user linked to the Nintendo Account that should own the game.
- A Nintendo Account country setting and eShop region compatible with the code.
- A code intended for Nintendo Switch software or content, rather than a code for a different platform or third-party service.
Downloadable software is assigned to the Nintendo Account linked to the user you select. Decide which user should receive the game before entering anything; Nintendo says that redeemed content cannot later be transferred to another user.
If the code came from a retailer, keep the receipt, card, order confirmation, and any activation information until the game appears in the account. Those details may be needed if the seller did not activate the code or if Nintendo Support asks for proof of purchase.

How to redeem a Nintendo Switch game code on the console
- Connect the Switch to the internet. Check the connection in System Settings > Internet > Internet Settings if necessary. Redemption requires the eShop to communicate with Nintendo’s servers.
- Open Nintendo eShop. From the HOME Menu, select the orange shopping-bag icon.
- Choose the correct user. Select the profile whose linked Nintendo Account should own the game. If multiple people use the console, pause here and verify the account name before continuing.
- Open the code-entry screen. In the left-hand eShop menu, select Enter Code or Redeem Code. Nintendo uses both labels in its support material, and the wording can vary by region or software version.
- Enter the code. Type the 16 characters exactly as shown on the receipt or card. The on-screen keyboard accepts the code without spaces.
- Confirm redemption. Review the title and account information displayed by eShop, then confirm. If the code is valid for that account, region and system, redemption completes.
After confirmation, the software icon normally appears on the HOME Menu with a download-status indicator. You can open the icon to see progress. The appearance of that icon is a useful confirmation that the code was accepted; it does not mean a failed entry has been redeemed.
If the title does not appear immediately, do not submit the same code over and over. First check the HOME Menu, the selected account’s content or redemption history, and the other users on the console. A successful redemption may already be associated with a different profile.
Where do I enter a Nintendo eShop code?
The code is entered inside Nintendo eShop, not in the general Nintendo Switch settings. Open eShop from HOME, select the intended user, and use the code-entry item in the left-side menu. Depending on the region or interface version, the item may be labeled Enter Code or Redeem Code.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not confuse a Nintendo eShop download code with a code for a subscription, in-game currency, a publisher’s website, or another service. Those products may have a separate redemption page and may not work in the Switch eShop code screen.
Which Nintendo Account receives the game?
The selected Switch user determines ownership. Nintendo links the code to that user’s Nintendo Account, not merely to the physical console. Selecting a family member’s profile by mistake means the game belongs to that account even if everyone plays on the same Switch.
Check the account before confirming
- At the user-selection screen, choose the profile that should own the purchase.
- Do not assume the first profile shown is the account you want.
- If the console has several users, note the Nintendo Account email or nickname associated with each profile.
- After redemption, look for the game in the selected account’s software and redemption history if you need to verify ownership.
Nintendo’s support guidance states that redeemed content cannot be moved to another user later. A different user on the same console can usually play the game under the console’s normal account and sharing rules, but that does not change who owns the license.
This is especially important when a child and parent share a Switch, when a console has been handed down, or when several Nintendo Accounts are listed on the same HOME Menu. The console is not a substitute for choosing the correct account: the profile selected when eShop opens controls where the code is assigned.

Can you redeem a code without the Switch?
Yes. Nintendo provides an online redemption route for people who do not currently have the console available.
- Open Nintendo’s official online code-redemption page in a browser.
- Sign in to the Nintendo Account that should receive the game.
- Confirm that the displayed account identity is correct.
- Enter the 16-digit code and submit it.
- Confirm redemption when Nintendo displays the title and account information.
There is an important prerequisite: Nintendo says the account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 at least once before the browser route can be used. If the account has never opened eShop on either console, redeem the code from the console first.
Online redemption still assigns the game to the signed-in Nintendo Account. It does not bypass region restrictions, platform restrictions or account-ownership rules. If you are signed into the wrong Nintendo Account in the browser, stop and switch accounts before submitting the code.
When the browser method is useful
Use the browser route when the console is unavailable but the intended account has already met Nintendo’s eShop-access requirement. It is also useful when you want to assign the code without asking another person to open the console. The game is assigned to the account; the compatible Switch can download it when that account uses eShop on the console.

Use the console method instead when you need to verify the user visually, when the account has never accessed eShop on Switch or Switch 2, or when you want the download-status icon to appear on the console immediately.
Region matching: why a valid-looking code can fail
Nintendo’s Americas support page states: “A download code can only be redeemed on a Nintendo eShop set to the same region as the game.” In practice, the country setting on the Nintendo Account determines which eShop region the console uses. A code purchased for one region can therefore be rejected even when every character was typed correctly.
Check the region before troubleshooting the characters
- Identify the country or region printed on the card, receipt or retailer listing.
- Check the Nintendo Account country setting and the eShop region currently used by the Switch.
- Make sure those regions match the code’s intended market.
For example, a code sold for one country’s eShop is not automatically interchangeable with a code sold for another country’s eShop. The fact that the title is available in both places does not remove the region requirement.

Changing an account country is not a guaranteed repair for an incompatible code. Country changes can have account consequences, and the code still has to be eligible for the destination eShop. If the region remains wrong after checking the account and code terms, contact the seller or Nintendo Support rather than repeatedly submitting it.
Switch and Switch 2 compatibility
| Code type | Where Nintendo says it can be redeemed | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch software code | Nintendo Switch eShop and Nintendo Switch 2 eShop | Use the eShop region that matches the game code. |
| Nintendo Switch 2-only software, downloadable content or upgrade pack | Not redeemable in the original Nintendo Switch eShop | Use a Nintendo Switch 2 eShop and confirm that the account and code are eligible. |
Nintendo’s support information distinguishes ordinary Switch software from Switch 2-only products. If a code is rejected on an original Switch, check the product description and release information for a Switch 2 requirement before assuming the code is defective.
A code can therefore be genuine, unused and correctly typed yet still fail because it was issued for Switch 2-only software, downloadable content, or an upgrade pack. Check the platform wording on the retailer listing, packaging, or receipt.
What to do when a Nintendo Switch code is not working
Match the error or symptom to the most likely cause instead of entering the same code repeatedly.
“The code has already been used”
First check whether the game is already downloading or installed. Open the HOME Menu and inspect the software icons, then check the Nintendo Account’s content or redemption history. If several users share the console, inspect the other profiles: another Nintendo Account may have redeemed the code. A code that was successfully redeemed cannot be used again.

Compare every character with the receipt or card and re-enter it slowly. Nintendo’s Japanese Switch 2 instructions note that eShop codes do not use the letters O, I or Z, which helps avoid confusion with zero, one and two. That convention should not be applied automatically to codes issued by third-party services; follow the provider’s own instructions for those codes.
It is not actually a Nintendo eShop code
Retailers and publishers may sell codes for subscriptions, in-game currency, downloadable content, another console, or an external service. Nintendo says third-party service codes must be handled according to the provider’s instructions. Confirm that the item is specifically a Nintendo eShop download code before trying the Switch redemption screen.

The region is wrong
Review the code’s market and the Nintendo Account country setting. Region mismatch is a compatibility problem, not a typing problem. Use a code intended for the eShop region in which the account is configured.
The game or content has not released yet
Some codes cannot be redeemed until the associated software is available. Check the stated release date and whether the item is a preorder, an upgrade pack or another product with a separate launch schedule.
The code is for Switch 2-only content
An original Switch eShop cannot redeem codes for Switch 2-only software, downloadable content or upgrade packs. Confirm the platform requirement on the code packaging or retailer information and use the appropriate eShop.
The code has expired or was not activated by the retailer
Nintendo lists expiry and retailer activation among possible download-code problems. If the code came from a shop, verify that the cashier or online seller activated it and that any expiry terms have not passed. Keep the receipt, card and order details when contacting the retailer or Nintendo Support.
The account is not the intended one
If the title appears under another profile, the code was likely redeemed while that user was selected. Nintendo does not provide a later transfer to the intended user. Confirm which account received it before asking the retailer or Nintendo to investigate.
The online route is unavailable
If the browser redemption page will not accept the account, check whether that Nintendo Account has accessed eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once. Until that prerequisite is met, use the console route instead.

Console redemption versus browser redemption
| Question | Redeem on Switch | Redeem online |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need the console in front of you? | Yes, with an internet connection. | No browser access to the console is needed. |
| Which account is used? | The Nintendo Account linked to the user selected when eShop opens. | The Nintendo Account used to sign in on Nintendo’s redemption page. |
| Account prerequisite | Select the intended user before entering the code. | The account must previously have accessed eShop on Switch or Switch 2 at least once. |
| Where does downloading start? | The software icon appears on the console’s HOME Menu. | The game is assigned to the account; the console can download it when that account uses eShop on a compatible Switch. |
Use the console method when you want to verify the user and start the download immediately. Use the browser method when the account has already met Nintendo’s eShop-access requirement and the console is unavailable.

Questions to check before contacting support
- Is the code exactly 16 characters, and did you enter every character correctly?
- Did you select the Nintendo Switch user linked to the intended owner?
- Does the code’s region match the Nintendo Account’s eShop region?
- Is the product for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 or a third-party service?
- Has the software released, and is the code still within its validity period?
- Was the code activated by the retailer?
- Could another user on the console have redeemed it already?
- Have you saved the exact error message instead of only describing it as “not working”?
If all of these checks pass and Nintendo eShop still rejects the code, save the exact error message and contact Nintendo Support or the retailer that issued the code. Provide proof of purchase when requested; do not publish the full unused code in a public forum.

- Switch 2-only software and content cannot be redeemed in the original Nintendo Switch eShop.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I redeem a Nintendo Switch game code?
Connect the Switch to the internet, open Nintendo eShop from HOME, select the user whose Nintendo Account should own the game, choose Enter Code or Redeem Code in the left menu, enter the 16-character code, and confirm.
Where is the Nintendo eShop code-entry option?
Open Nintendo eShop and look in the left-side menu. Nintendo uses both Enter Code and Redeem Code labels, so the wording may differ by region or interface version.
Can I redeem a Nintendo eShop code online?
Yes. Sign in to Nintendo’s official redemption page, verify the intended Nintendo Account, enter the 16-digit code, and confirm. That account must have accessed Nintendo eShop on a Switch or Switch 2 at least once.
Does my Nintendo eShop code have to match my region?
Yes. Nintendo states that a download code can only be redeemed on an eShop set to the same region as the game. Check the code’s market and the Nintendo Account country setting.
Why is my Switch code not working even though I typed it correctly?
Check whether the code was already used, belongs to another region, is for Switch 2-only content, has not reached its release date, expired, or was not activated by the retailer. Also confirm that it is a Nintendo eShop code rather than a third-party service code.
Can I move a redeemed game to another Switch user?
Nintendo says redeemed content is assigned to the Nintendo Account linked to the selected user and cannot later be transferred to another user. Choose the owner carefully before confirming.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan an original Nintendo Switch redeem a Switch 2 code?
Ordinary Switch software codes can also be redeemed in the Switch 2 eShop, but Switch 2-only software, downloadable content, and upgrade packs cannot be redeemed in the original Switch eShop.
What should I do if a retailer code says it is invalid?
Check the code characters, region, product type, release status, expiry terms, and retailer activation. Keep the receipt or order details and contact the retailer or Nintendo Support if the code remains invalid.
The Bottom Line
Choose the correct Nintendo Switch user first, then enter the 16-character code through Nintendo eShop’s Enter Code or Redeem Code option. The Nintendo Account linked to that user receives the game, and the code’s region and platform must match the eShop. If the console is unavailable, use Nintendo’s browser redemption page after that account has accessed eShop on Switch or Switch 2.
