Neither option is always cheaper. A discounted Nintendo Switch download is the better deal when its current, tax-inclusive eShop price is below the delivered cost of a comparable used cartridge, or when convenience matters most. A used physical copy can be the better value when its delivered price is lower and you expect to lend or resell it. Compare the same title and edition in the same region, then treat resale money as uncertain recovery rather than an automatic discount.
This guide uses United States examples because Nintendo of America’s sales page is a US storefront. Prices, taxes, shipping, editions and sale timing can produce a different answer in another country.

The answer in one calculation
For each game, write down four figures:
- Digital total: the current regional eShop sale price plus any applicable tax.
- Physical total: the used listing price, shipping and applicable tax for a cartridge whose condition and completeness meet your needs.
- Possible recovery: a conservative estimate of what you might net if you later sell the cartridge, after marketplace fees and postage.
- Non-price value: whether you prefer instant access and no cartridge swapping, or the ability to lend and resell.
Use this comparison:
Digital cost = sale price + taxPhysical cost = listing price + shipping + taxPhysical effective cost = physical cost − realistic net resale proceeds
The physical effective cost is only an estimate. Demand, condition, timing and the way you sell determine whether you receive anything close to it. If you cannot find credible completed-sale evidence, leave the recovery at zero rather than treating an optimistic asking price as money you will definitely get.

| Question | Digital sale | Used cartridge |
|---|---|---|
| What price to compare | Current regional eShop sale price, plus tax | Listing price, shipping and tax for the exact condition |
| Access | Download tied to your Nintendo account; no cartridge to carry or swap | Insert the cartridge to play; the cartridge can be moved between compatible consoles |
| Lending | No equivalent physical hand-off of the purchased copy | Can be lent while you are not using it |
| Resale | No normal used-cartridge resale route | Can potentially be sold later, with uncertain net proceeds |
| Main uncertainty | Sale price and sale duration vary by region and title | Condition, completeness, shipping and market demand vary by listing |
Match the exact game, edition and region
Start with the same title, platform edition and included content. A standard edition download is not an apples-to-apples comparison with a cartridge bundled with a season pass, bonus items or a different regional release. Check the title screen, product description and included-DLC notes before recording a price.
Nintendo’s US sales page shows current and regular prices for digital games, but offers change over time: Nintendo Official Site: Sales and Deals. Record the date, sale price and regular price so you know whether you are comparing a temporary promotion or the usual cost.
Do not transfer a price from a tracker or marketplace in another currency into a US calculation. NTPrices explains that eShop prices differ by region and tracks regional storefronts and price history: NTPrices eShop price tracker. A Canadian, UK or Australian price is evidence for that region only; it does not establish what a US buyer will pay after tax.

How to find the real digital cost
1. Check Nintendo’s current US listing
- Open the Nintendo sales page and select the game’s exact edition.
- Write down the displayed sale price and the regular price shown beside it.
- Note any sale end date or eligibility condition displayed on the product page.
- Add the sales tax that will apply to your Nintendo account at checkout.
The amount that matters is the checkout total, not a headline price copied from an old article or screenshot. If the game is not currently discounted, compare its current regular price with the delivered used offer instead of calling a historical low a present bargain.
2. Use price history to judge the timing
A sale can be genuinely unusual or simply a recurring discount. NTPrices records regional eShop prices, sale status and historical changes. Its page snapshot accessed on October 13, 2026 reported “49,509 Games tracked,” “48+ eShop regions,” “8,080 On sale right now,” and “1.9M Prices logged.” Those are tracker-scale coverage figures, not measurements of how much buyers save and not proof that digital games are cheaper than cartridges.
Use the history to answer a narrow question: Is buying now important? If the current price is close to the game’s usual sale level, waiting may be reasonable if you are also watching used listings. If it is an unusually low regional price, the digital option may win before the promotion ends. The tracker does not guarantee that a future sale will occur or that another region’s price applies to you.

3. Include the costs that belong to your account
Apply tax and any account-specific charge at checkout. Do not add shipping to a download, but do account for the value of storage space, download time and the convenience of launching the game without finding a cartridge if those factors affect your decision. These convenience benefits are real, but they are not part of the dollar price.
How to price a used physical copy
Inspect the actual listing, not a generic “used” number
A used cartridge has no single standardized price. Listings can differ by cartridge-only, cartridge with case, complete-in-box condition, label wear, missing inserts, region and seller reputation. Comparison pages may group several condition categories together, so open the individual listing and verify the grade, photographs and return terms.
NTPrices’ used-game page collects second-hand offers and advises checking the listing’s condition: NTPrices used Switch games. Treat a displayed range as a starting point, not as the delivered price for the copy you will receive.
Build the delivered total
- Copy the listing price for the exact title and edition.
- Add shipping to your address.
- Add sales tax or other checkout charges.
- Check whether the listing includes the original case and inserts if those matter to you.
- Confirm that the cartridge’s region and edition match your console and the content you want.
Compare that delivered total with the digital checkout total. A cartridge that looks cheaper in a search result can lose its advantage after postage and tax; a nearby local offer may be cheaper than a shipped listing even when its sticker price is higher.
Condition terms that change the comparison
| Condition you may see | What to verify | Why it changes value |
|---|---|---|
| Cartridge only (loose) | Cartridge label, contacts and seller’s functional guarantee | Usually omits the case and inserts; easier to store but less complete |
| Complete in box | Original case, cover art, inserts and matching cartridge | More comparable to a new retail package and may have stronger resale appeal |
| New or sealed | Seal authenticity and whether the seller’s “new” label means unopened | Not a like-for-like used purchase; price can reflect collector demand |
Price guides often separate loose, complete-in-box and new values for exactly this reason. Never use a complete-in-box value to justify a cartridge-only purchase unless you deliberately accept the missing packaging.

Resale is the main financial advantage a physical copy can have, but it is a potential recovery, not a guaranteed discount. The game may fall in demand, your copy may be downgraded for wear, and selling takes time. You also pay marketplace fees and shipping, and a buyer may return an item.

Use completed sales, not asking prices
PriceCharting says its Nintendo Switch guide uses sold listings from eBay and other marketplaces and separates loose, complete-in-box and new values: PriceCharting Nintendo Switch prices and values. A seller’s unsold $60 listing is not evidence that you will receive $60.
CartridgeBond describes a different cross-check: recent eBay sold listings, PriceCharting complete-condition values and observed local activity. Its methodology page was last updated April 28, 2026: CartridgeBond Switch game prices. The two methods illustrate why evidence type and condition assumptions matter; neither promises the amount you will realize.
Calculate a conservative net
Take several recent sold prices for the same edition and condition. Use the lower portion of that group when demand is uncertain. Then subtract the fee charged by your selling venue and the postage or local-travel cost required to complete the sale:

Net resale = completed-sale price − selling fee − outbound shipping − other transaction costs
For a cartridge missing its case, compare it with loose sales, not complete-in-box sales. If the only evidence is a current asking price, mark potential recovery as “not established” and make your decision using the purchase price alone.
Convenience, lending and ownership preferences
A price-only calculation misses how you use your library. A digital purchase removes cartridge swapping and keeps the game available when the console is stored away. A physical copy gives you an object that can be lent to a friend or sold when you are finished. Those are different forms of value, not hidden discounts.

Ask yourself:
- Will you replay the game often enough that avoiding cartridge changes matters?
- Do you share games with family or friends?
- Do you routinely sell finished games, or do they stay in your collection?
- Would a missing case or worn label bother you?
- Is immediate access more important than waiting for a shipped copy?
If you will never lend or resell, assigning a resale value to the cartridge can make the physical option look cheaper than your actual behavior supports. If you regularly pass games around, the cartridge’s flexibility may justify a small price premium over a download.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical side-by-side decision table
| Situation | Likely better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| The eShop sale total is lower than every comparable delivered used offer | Digital | You pay less now and avoid condition and shipping uncertainty |
| A condition-matched used copy costs less after shipping and tax | Used physical | The immediate purchase price is lower |
| You expect to sell after finishing and can document strong sold prices | Used physical may win | Potential net recovery reduces effective cost, but remains uncertain |
| You lend games or collect complete packages | Used physical | Lending and packaging have value that a download does not provide |
| You want instant access and never trade games | Digital | Convenience can outweigh a small price difference |
| The cartridge listing has unclear condition or unusually high shipping | Digital or another physical listing | The apparent bargain is not an apples-to-apples delivered price |
Illustrative calculation (replace the variables with your prices)
Suppose a game’s regional eShop checkout total is D. A cartridge listing shows price P, shipping S and tax T. Your conservative sold-listing estimate is R, and fees plus postage to sell are F. The comparison is:
Digital = DPhysical now = P + S + TPhysical effective = P + S + T − (R − F)
If the physical effective figure is only a few dollars below the digital total, decide using lending, packaging and convenience rather than pretending the difference is certain profit. If the physical listing is cartridge-only while your resale estimate assumes a complete box, replace R with a loose-condition estimate before deciding.
Regional, timing and evidence limits
Discounts are regional and title-specific. A US buyer should use the US Nintendo listing and US checkout tax, then compare with offers that ship to the buyer’s address. NTPrices can reveal how prices vary among storefront regions, but a tracker’s currency or region must be labeled before you use it.
No original-publisher statistic establishes an average total-cost advantage for buying the same Switch game digitally on sale instead of used physically. There is therefore no defensible universal savings percentage. The documented evidence supports a title-by-title decision based on current prices, condition and resale assumptions.
Market guides also use different evidence. PriceCharting emphasizes sold marketplace listings; CartridgeBond combines recent sold listings with complete-condition values and local Wisconsin activity. These methods are useful reference points, not guarantees of what a particular buyer or seller will pay in another location.

Step-by-step checklist before you buy
- Identify the exact release. Match title, edition, region and included content.
- Record the digital offer. Use Nintendo’s current regional listing, including sale end information and tax.
- Check history. Use a regional price tracker to see whether the discount is unusual or routine.
- Find physical candidates. Gather at least two condition-matched listings that ship to you.
- Calculate delivered cost. Add shipping and tax; do not compare sticker prices.
- Check completeness. Decide whether cartridge-only is acceptable or whether you require the original case and inserts.
- Estimate recovery cautiously. Use completed sales for the same condition and subtract fees and postage.
- Apply your usage preference. Assign value to lending, collecting, instant access and avoiding cartridge swaps.
- Buy the option that wins on your priorities. Save a screenshot or note of the prices and date if the sale is temporary.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Comparing a sale price with a best-case physical price
Correction: compare the digital checkout total with the delivered total of a specific used listing, including tax and shipping.
Using a historical low as today’s price
Correction: verify the current Nintendo listing and record the date. History can provide context, not a promise that the same discount returns.
Calling an asking price resale value
Correction: use completed sales and subtract fees and postage. An unsold listing proves only that someone requested that amount.

Correction: compare loose with loose, complete-in-box with complete-in-box, and new with new. If the source does not state a category, label the value “not stated” and avoid using it as a precise estimate.
Ignoring regional currency
Correction: keep the calculation inside one storefront region and identify the currency. Do not import a foreign tracker price into a US decision.
Bottom line: choose per title, not by format
Buy the Nintendo Switch download when the current, tax-inclusive regional sale price is lower than a comparable delivered cartridge or when your priority is immediate, no-swapping access. Buy used physical when the delivered price is lower and you value lending, collecting or a realistic chance to recover part of the cost later. Because prices, condition and demand change, the better deal is the one that wins the same-title calculation on the day you buy.
