A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11You can make a mechanical keyboard substantially less distracting without giving up its tactile bump, but the right fix depends on where the noise starts. A sharp click at the end of a keystroke usually comes from switch bottom-out or top-out. A clack limited to the space bar, Enter, or Shift often comes from stabilizers and keycap contact. A hollow echo points to the case and internal layers.
For a compatible hot-swap board, replacing the switches with silent tactile models is the most direct approach. If your keyboard is not replaceable, or you do not want to open it, a complete keyboard with factory-installed silent tactile switches and internal damping is the lower-risk alternative. “Silent” describes noise reduction, not guaranteed inaudibility in every room, desk, keycap, or typing style.

Start with the sound, not the product
Before buying anything, identify the dominant sound. A keyboard can have several independent noise sources, and treating the wrong one leaves the main distraction unchanged.

GATERON’s February 27, 2026 guide identifies two principal switch-noise events. Bottom-out happens when the stem reaches the lower housing at the end of a press; top-out happens when the stem returns and taps the upper housing. These impacts are usually heard across most letter keys and become more obvious when you press quickly or with more force.

Large-key rattle
If the noise is concentrated on the space bar, Enter, Backspace, or Shift, the switch may not be the main culprit. Logitech’s Silent Touch white paper describes keycap geometry, damping material, and balance-bar contact as additional sources of sound. A stabilized key can rattle or tick even when its switch is relatively quiet.
Case resonance
A hollow, echoing character that seems to come from the whole board can be amplified by the case, plate, PCB, or empty cavities. Product descriptions from be quiet! and MSI show why internal construction matters: foam, silicone, muffler pads, and other layers are intended to reduce resonance and sound transmission. Those descriptions do not prove that one layer will solve every keyboard, but they provide a useful diagnostic distinction from switch noise.
A five-minute diagnosis
- Record a few individual keys. Press a letter key slowly, then quickly, and listen for a sharp impact at the bottom and another as the key returns.
- Compare a letter key with the space bar. If the space bar has a separate rattle or metallic tick, treat it as a stabilizer problem rather than assuming every switch needs replacement.
- Listen above and below the board. Hold the keyboard lightly on its sides and repeat a keypress. A large change in the echo suggests that case contact with the desk or internal resonance is contributing.
- Try lighter presses. If the sound drops dramatically when you stop bottoming out, technique and impact energy are part of the problem. A silent tactile switch can reduce the impact, but it cannot remove the sound of a keycap striking the plate or your fingers striking hard.
- Check whether the board is replaceable. Look up the exact model and revision in its manual. “Mechanical” does not automatically mean hot-swappable; some switches are soldered to the PCB.
This diagnosis is a decision aid, not a guarantee that one intervention fixes every source. A board can have quiet switches and noisy stabilizers, or good damping and loud switch impacts at the same time.

Option 1: replace switches with silent tactile switches
On a compatible hot-swap keyboard, switch replacement addresses the most common source of broad, sharp noise while preserving a tactile event. Silent tactile designs use damping features to cushion or control contact sound; they still have a bump intended to signal actuation. The exact bump shape, spring weight, and return feel vary by model and by typist.
What the GATERON KS-6 Aliaz specifications mean
GATERON identifies its KS-6 Aliaz as a tactile, 5-pin PCB-mount, MX-style switch. The stated specifications are 2.0 ± 0.6 mm pre-travel, 4.0 mm maximum total travel, and operating-force options of 60, 70, 80, or 100 gf, each with a ±15 gf tolerance. These are manufacturer specifications for that model, not universal values for silent tactile switches.

A higher-force option can feel more deliberate, while a lower-force option can reduce finger effort. Neither number predicts the whole experience: the bump profile, spring curve, keycap weight, lubrication, and your typing style all affect perceived tactility. If possible, try a sample or buy from a seller with a return policy before replacing a full board.
Compatibility checklist
- Hot-swap support: confirm that the exact keyboard accepts replaceable switches. A soldered PCB requires desoldering and soldering equipment, and the manufacturer’s service guidance should take precedence.
- MX-style fit: the Aliaz guide describes an MX-style switch. A compatible stem does not by itself prove that the switch will fit your plate, socket, or firmware.
- Pin and mounting format: Aliaz is 5-pin PCB mount. Check whether your board has holes for the two extra locating pins or whether the switch can be adapted without compromising alignment.
- Layout and stabilizers: a switch swap changes the switches under stabilized keys but does not automatically remove stabilizer rattle.
- Clearance: verify that the switch housing and pins do not conflict with the plate, PCB components, or any manufacturer-specific socket design.
Safe replacement sequence for a hot-swap board
Use the keyboard maker’s manual for model-specific details. The following sequence is a general workflow, not a promise that every board uses the same construction.
- Disconnect the keyboard and remove the keycap from one test key.
- Use a switch puller designed for hot-swap boards. Grip the switch housing, not the stem, and release the locking tabs without twisting the socket.
- Inspect the replacement switch’s pins. Straighten any bent pin before insertion; forcing a bent pin can damage the socket.
- Align the switch with the plate and PCB, then press evenly until it is fully seated. Do not use the keycap as a lever.
- Reconnect the keyboard and test that key before changing a whole row. Confirm registration, return, and the absence of scraping or intermittent presses.
- Replace the remaining switches gradually, testing each group. Keep the original switches labelled so you can reverse the change if the new force or bump is unsuitable.
A switch puller makes removal easier, but it is an installation accessory rather than a noise treatment. If a socket feels loose, a pin bends repeatedly, or a key stops registering, stop and consult the keyboard manufacturer instead of repeatedly reseating it.
Option 2: buy a complete keyboard with silent tactile switches
A factory-built board is often the better route when your current keyboard is soldered, its sockets are damaged, or you do not want to disassemble it. Compare the installed switch, layout, stabilizer treatment, and internal sound-control construction—not only the word “silent” on the box.
be quiet! Dark Mount Silent Tactile FR ISO
be quiet! describes its Dark Mount Silent Tactile FR ISO as using pre-lubricated switches, 5-pin MX-style hot-swap support, foam and silicone layers, and additional space-bar damping. The cited configuration is FR ISO; do not assume that this exact layout or regional availability applies to every market. The construction details indicate an attempt to control both switch and case noise, but they are the manufacturer’s design description rather than an independent comparative test.

MSI STRIKE 600 V2
MSI describes the STRIKE 600 V2 as using Kailh Midnight Pro Silent Tactile switches, an integrated muffler pad, and multiple sound-dampening layers. MSI states that these switches operate at below 35 dB and publishes operating and tactile-force figures on its product page. Treat “below 35 dB” as MSI’s product claim: the page does not establish a test protocol that makes the number directly comparable with another keyboard, a switch sold separately, or your desk setup.

Switch noise and complete-board noise are different problems
A silent tactile switch can reduce bottom-out and top-out impact while leaving a loud space bar untouched. Conversely, a heavily damped case can make a board less hollow while the switches still produce sharp impacts. Treat each layer separately.
Stabilizers and large keys
Logitech’s explanation of Silent Touch keyboards identifies balance bars and keycap contact as noise contributors. be quiet! describes lubricated stabilizers and cushioning where the stabilizer meets the PCB in its Dark Mount design. These examples show why large-key treatment matters, but they are not universal repair instructions for unrelated keyboards.
If only one large key is noisy, inspect that key’s cap, wire, and stabilizer housing for looseness according to the keyboard maker’s service instructions. Do not assume that adding lubricant, foam, or an O-ring will preserve the original feel on every construction. The sources do not establish a single DIY modification that is guaranteed to work across boards.
Case, plate, and desk contact
Foam, silicone, muffler pads, and similar layers can limit resonance and transmission. Their effect depends on the case volume, plate material, PCB spacing, and desk surface. A hard desk can reflect sound even when the keyboard itself is well damped. A desk mat may change the reflected character, but it will not replace a noisy switch or loose stabilizer.

How to compare silent tactile choices
| Factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Tactile character | Is the bump early, rounded, sharp, or subtle? | Two tactile switches can signal actuation very differently even at the same force. |
| Force | What operating-force range is published, and is tolerance stated? | Force affects fatigue and control; a nominal number is not a complete feel description. |
| Travel | What are pre-travel and total-travel figures? | Travel changes when the bump and bottom-out occur. Compare like terms only. |
| Noise source addressed | Does the design target switch impacts, stabilizers, resonance, or several? | Matching the treatment to the diagnosis prevents an expensive side-grade. |
| Compatibility | Is the board hot-swappable, and does it accept the switch’s pin and mounting format? | MX-style stems alone do not establish socket or plate compatibility. |
| Evidence quality | Is a decibel figure attributed to a manufacturer, and is its method disclosed? | Without a shared protocol, published noise numbers should not be ranked across brands. |
There is no independent standardized comparison in the cited material for the named products. Manufacturer figures are useful for understanding a product’s stated design, not for declaring one keyboard objectively quietest.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preserve tactility while reducing impact
Tactile feedback is the finger’s signal that the key has actuated; GATERON describes it as telling your fingers, “the key has actuated.” Noise and tactility are related in perception but are not the same property. A switch can retain a pronounced bump while damping the housing contact that creates a sharp sound.
To keep the feedback you like, compare the bump profile before comparing decibels. If you prefer a strong, unmistakable event, a very light or gently rounded silent tactile may feel too soft even if it is quieter. If you type for long sessions, a high-force option may feel controlled at first but tiring later. The Aliaz choices of 60, 70, 80, and 100 gf give a range to consider, but the published ±15 gf tolerance means individual switches can differ around the nominal value.
Keycap material and typing force also change the result. Heavy caps can increase the energy at impact; bottoming out aggressively can remain audible after a switch change. The practical goal is not laboratory silence but a sound level that no longer distracts you or people nearby while the bump remains legible under your fingers.

Common mistakes and how to recover
Buying switches before checking the PCB
Symptom: the switches do not seat, the board has no hot-swap sockets, or keys stop registering. Recovery: stop forcing parts, reinstall the original switch if safe, and verify the exact keyboard revision and mounting format. A soldered board needs a different repair path.

Expecting a switch swap to quiet the space bar
Symptom: letter keys improve but the space bar still rattles. Recovery: inspect the stabilizer and keycap under the manufacturer’s service guidance. A switch change does not automatically alter balance-bar contact.
Treating a manufacturer decibel claim as a universal measurement
Symptom: a keyboard advertised below a particular dB level sounds louder in your room. Recovery: remember that MSI’s below-35-dB statement is a product claim without a shared cross-product protocol in the cited material. Desk, microphone distance, keycap force, and room acoustics all affect perceived sound.
Assuming “silent” means inaudible
Symptom: you still hear keycaps, stabilizers, or desk reflections. Recovery: return to the diagnosis: identify whether the remaining sound is switch impact, large-key rattle, or case resonance, then address that layer.
Modifying a board without construction-specific guidance
Symptom: foam, lubricant, or an O-ring changes travel, creates rubbing, or makes a key unreliable. Recovery: remove the modification if possible and follow the keyboard maker’s service documentation. The cited sources do not support a universal DIY recipe that preserves every board’s feel.
A practical buying checklist
- Write down which keys and which part of the stroke are loudest.
- Decide whether you can use a hot-swap board or need a complete keyboard.
- For replacement switches, verify 5-pin versus other mounting, socket support, and MX-style compatibility.
- Choose tactile force and bump shape for your hands, not only for a noise label.
- For a complete keyboard, confirm layout, installed switch, stabilizer treatment, and internal damping layers.
- Read noise figures as manufacturer claims unless a common test method is provided.
- Check current regional availability and return terms; layouts and product details can change.
- Plan for residual sounds from large keys, keycaps, and the desk even after a successful switch change.
The bottom line
Diagnose first. If most keys produce sharp bottom-out or top-out impacts and your board is hot-swappable, silent tactile switches are the most targeted fix. If the board is not replaceable, choose a complete silent-tactile keyboard whose specifications include both the switch and its damping construction. If one large key or the whole case remains loud, address stabilizers or resonance separately. In every case, judge “silent” as relative noise reduction and judge tactility by the bump and force your fingers actually prefer.
