This process applies to a digital game or related digital purchase made from Microsoft through Xbox. Have the following ready:

- The game or add-on’s order details, if you have them. You can still begin from the refund form and select the matching item shown there.
- A concise explanation of why you want the money returned. The form asks for a reason before submission.
- Access to the original payment account or card if the refund is approved. Microsoft generally applies a refund to the original payment option, so a different card is not normally selected during this process.
It helps to check Microsoft order history before opening the form. Confirm the exact title, edition, and account that completed the payment. Digital versions can have similar names, and a purchase made under another Microsoft account will not necessarily appear simply because that account is used on the same Xbox console.

If the Xbox page displays a message that JavaScript is required, allow the page to load fully in a supported browser before deciding that the request tool is unavailable. The Xbox-specific page is an online form, not a general explanation of every eligibility rule.
Microsoft describes availability in conditional terms: “If you purchased a game or app from Microsoft, you may be able to request a refund.” That wording is not an approval promise. Microsoft’s general digital-goods terms say games and add-on content are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes the buyer eligible. What this refund route covers
The Xbox route is intended for digital games and related digital purchases sold by Microsoft. It is not a universal return process for a physical disc, controller, headset, gift card, or another item bought from a separate retailer. If the transaction was not made through Microsoft, the seller that charged you controls the applicable return process.
An add-on or other digital item can appear in the same general flow as a game. Select the exact order line shown in the account rather than assuming that a refund for the base game automatically includes every related purchase. The order-specific form is the practical way to see which item Microsoft has made available for review.
How to submit an Xbox game refund request

Open the Xbox digital-game refund page
Use Microsoft’s official Request a refund for digital games page. It is the Xbox-specific route linked by Microsoft Support. Start there instead of relying on an old forum link or a generic store-return page.

Sign in with the purchasing account
Log in with the Microsoft account used to buy the game. If you have more than one Xbox account, check the account shown in your Microsoft order history before continuing. A console profile that did not make the payment will not necessarily show the order.
Family settings do not change which account owns the transaction. The account that authorized and paid for the purchase is the one that should open and track the request. If a family member asks you to submit it, identify the paying account first.

Select the correct order item
Choose the game, add-on, or other relevant digital item from the list. Verify the title and purchase before selecting the refund option; selecting a similarly named item can send the request against the wrong order.
Pay particular attention to bundles. A bundle may be represented by one parent order rather than separate returnable lines. Microsoft’s stated guidance does not allow one component of a bundle to be returned by itself.

Choose Request a refund
Select the button labeled Request a refund. The form determines whether that order can enter the online request flow; the button itself is not a guarantee that Microsoft will approve the refund.
If the control is missing, do not substitute a guessed day limit or playtime limit. The absence can reflect the transaction’s terms, the bundle restriction, or the fact that online requests are not offered in your market.

Give a reason and review the details
Enter the reason requested by the form, select Next, and check the order, payment, and contact details displayed. Keep the explanation factual and specific, particularly if the problem concerns an incorrect purchase or a technical issue.
Describe the purchase you selected and the remedy you are asking for. Avoid submitting a second request with a different explanation while the first is still under review; use the status page to follow the existing request.

Submit the request
Select Submit. Save the confirmation or note the order number so you can match the decision to the right purchase later. The confirmation is useful if you need to contact Microsoft after the review period or if several similar orders appear in your history.
How to tell whether the purchase qualifies
There is no confirmed universal Xbox cutoff in the public guidance
The available Xbox form requires JavaScript and does not expose a universal rule that every digital game must be within a particular number of days or below a particular number of gameplay hours. Microsoft’s published pages likewise do not establish a guaranteed purchase-age limit, playtime limit, or automatic approval rule for every Xbox digital game.

That means a number copied from another platform, an old forum post, or a retailer’s policy should not be treated as an Xbox rule. The 72-hour figure is the expected time to process a submitted request, not a deadline for making the purchase eligible. It also does not mean a request made inside 72 hours will be approved.
Use the order-specific form as the practical eligibility check
Sign in and select the actual order. If the item appears and the form lets you submit a request, Microsoft has made it available for review through that route. The final outcome can still depend on the offer terms, the transaction, your market, and applicable law. Form availability means the request can be evaluated; it is not a promise of reimbursement.
If the item is absent or the online route is unavailable, use the support options presented for your account and region rather than assuming that the purchase is permanently ineligible. First verify the account, title, edition, and transaction type. A missing item can be an account mismatch or a bundle structure, not necessarily a final decision.

Offer terms and local law can change the result
Microsoft’s general wording makes eligibility subject to the offer and applicable law. Consumer-protection rights can therefore differ by country or region. The stated return information does not remove remedies available under the Australian Consumer Law, for example. Treat Microsoft’s online process as an operational route, not a replacement for mandatory rights in your jurisdiction.
If you believe a refusal conflicts with a right granted where you live, keep the order number and decision details and use the support or consumer-remedy channel available in that market. Do not present a policy from another country as if it were the rule for your account.
Bundles are handled differently
Microsoft’s guidance says a single item bought as part of a bundle cannot be returned on its own. If you want to reverse a bundle purchase, identify the bundle as the order item and follow the form’s instructions; do not expect to split out one game or add-on and refund only that component.
This distinction matters when the game you want to return was advertised together with an expansion, bonus content, or another title. The request must correspond to the order Microsoft recognizes, and the stated restriction prevents treating each bundled component as an independent return.
Online requests are not offered in every market
Microsoft states that online return requests are not available in all markets. A missing button or an instruction to contact support can therefore be a regional limitation rather than proof that the game fails every eligibility test. Follow the market-specific instruction displayed after you sign in.

How long an Xbox refund takes
There are two separate clocks: Microsoft’s review of your request and the payment provider’s posting of money after Microsoft issues the refund.

These are practical estimates in Microsoft Support documentation, not a guaranteed service-level time for every bank, card, payment method, or country. A request can be decided within the first period while the credit remains pending with the payment provider during the second.
Count the clocks from the correct event. The 72-hour estimate concerns a submitted request. The 3–5-business-day estimate concerns a refund Microsoft has already issued. If the request is still under review, contacting a bank will not accelerate Microsoft’s decision; if it is marked issued, contacting only Microsoft may not explain a delay in the provider’s posting system.
How to check the refund status
- Open Xbox order history and sign in with the account that made the purchase.
- Locate the game or other order item you submitted.
- Read the item’s Refund status. Microsoft’s instructions for checking a return or refund are in this Microsoft Support article.
Use the exact order that generated the request. Similar titles, editions, or separate add-ons can otherwise make a status look missing when you are viewing a different transaction. The order number and confirmation saved at submission can help identify it.

If the status is still being processed, allow the stated review period to pass before treating the delay as a problem. If the status says the refund was issued but the money is not visible in the account, allow a few days for the original payment provider to post it. Microsoft says refunds are generally applied to the original payment option; a replacement payment method is not normally selected through this flow.
What to do when the form or status does not behave as expected
The game does not appear
- Sign out and back in with the Microsoft account that paid for the transaction.
- Check order history for the exact purchase, edition, and date. A different account, a bundle parent order, or a transaction made through another store can explain why the item is missing.
- Confirm that you are using the Xbox digital-game route, not a page for a physical product or a different Microsoft Store transaction.
- If the page has not loaded its interactive controls, allow JavaScript and the page scripts to finish loading. Then reload and check the account again.
The refund button is unavailable
Microsoft’s pages do not promise that every purchase will display an online request button. The item may be outside the offer’s conditions, may be part of a bundle that cannot be split, or may be in a market where online requests are unavailable. Follow any contact or support instruction shown for your region. Do not infer a universal cutoff from the missing control.
The request has been pending for more than 72 hours
Check the order’s Refund status rather than submitting repeated requests for the same item. Microsoft’s “up to 72 hours” wording is an estimate, so a longer wait can occur. If the status has not changed after that period, use the support path attached to the order and provide the confirmation or order number.
The status says issued but the credit is missing
Separate the approval decision from the bank posting. Verify that you are checking the original card, account, or other payment option, then allow the general 3–5-business-day estimate to pass. Payment-provider weekends, holidays, and internal posting schedules can add time. If the provider still cannot locate the credit after that interval, contact the provider and Microsoft with the order number and issued status.

The request was declined
A decline means Microsoft did not approve that request through the applicable terms and review. The public guidance does not provide a universal threshold that can be used to overturn every decline. Recheck the item, the purchasing account, and any regional or legal rights that apply; then use the support route available for your market if you believe the decision conflicts with the offer or mandatory consumer law.
The page says online requests are unavailable
Microsoft expressly notes that online return requests are not available in all markets. Follow the alternate contact instruction shown for the account and region. Keep the purchase information ready, because support will need to identify the transaction before discussing its status.
Refund versus cancelling an order or pre-order
Cancellation is a different operation from asking for a refund on a completed digital-game purchase. Microsoft maintains a separate guide for cancelling a Microsoft Store order or pre-order: Cancel an order or pre-order from Microsoft Store. Use that route when the transaction is still an order or pre-order and the page directs you to cancel it. Use the Xbox refund form for a purchase that has already completed and appears as a digital-game order eligible for refund review.
Do not treat a pre-order cancellation instruction as evidence of a guaranteed refund for an already released game. The applicable flow and terms depend on the transaction’s state. Before submitting anything, check whether the order is shown as a pre-order, a completed purchase, or another status in order history.
Important limits to keep in mind
- Digital scope: The Xbox form is for digital games and related Microsoft purchases. It is not a general return process for unrelated physical merchandise.
