How to Reinstall WordPress Without Losing Your Content

A safe WordPress reinstall replaces damaged core files while preserving your database, uploads, plugins, themes, settings, and configuration. Follow this backup-first procedure for dashboard or manual SFTP repairs.

Yes—you can reinstall WordPress without losing posts, pages, media, plugins, themes, or settings. The safe method is a core-file replacement: export the database, copy the files, then replace only the WordPress core while preserving wp-config.php and the entire wp-content/ directory.

WordPress keeps your site in two separate places. The database stores posts, pages, comments, links, and settings; the files store themes, plugins, uploads, configuration, and code. A backup of only one is not enough to recover the site.

What a WordPress reinstall actually does

A reinstall should refresh damaged or missing WordPress core files, not create a new blank site. You download a clean WordPress package and replace the files that belong to WordPress itself. Your existing database and site-specific files remain in place.

The database holds your published content and settings

The database contains every post, page, comment, link, and many administrative settings. It also stores data created by plugins and themes. Export it before changing files, because copying the server directory alone cannot restore database content.

The files hold your site code and media

Your file backup must include:

  • wp-config.php, which contains the database connection and site configuration.
  • The complete wp-content/ directory, including themes, plugins, uploads, and other site-specific data.
  • .htaccess and any custom files in the WordPress directory.
  • The rest of the WordPress directory, so you retain a complete fallback copy and can identify custom additions.

Core directories and files can normally be restored from a fresh WordPress download. The official WordPress Developer Resources documentation notes that there is normally no need to keep a separate copy of core files because they can be replaced from a fresh ZIP package; your own backup is still valuable for rollback and for custom files outside the package.

What a core reinstall cannot repair

Replacing core files does not fix a broken plugin, a faulty theme, or corrupted database tables. If the same error remains after a clean core upload, isolate extensions and check the database instead of repeatedly reinstalling WordPress.

Back up everything before touching the server

Do not begin the replacement until you have both backup objects: a database export and a file copy. WordPress describes these as the two parts of a site backup. Keep the pair together on a local computer or another location separate from the live server.

1. Export the database

Use your host’s database tool, such as its database administration interface, to export the complete WordPress database. Save the export as SQL, GZ, or BZ2, depending on the formats offered by your host. Make sure the export finishes successfully and that the resulting file can be opened or inspected rather than assuming a download completed correctly.

Record the database name, database user, password, host, and table prefix. These values are usually reflected in wp-config.php and are needed if you must reconnect the files to the database during recovery.

2. Download the complete file set

Download the entire WordPress directory with SFTP, FTP, or your hosting control panel’s file manager. Include wp-config.php, wp-content/, .htaccess, themes, plugins, uploads, and custom files. Do not rely on an installer backup that omits uploads or configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Keep more than one readable copy

Store the database export and file archive on your computer or other off-site storage, not only in the hosting account you are about to modify. WordPress’s backup guidance recommends keeping at least three to five recent backups in different locations. That is a procedural safety recommendation, not a measured failure rate, but it gives you a second recovery path if the live server or one backup becomes unusable.

4. Confirm access and site details

Before maintenance begins, verify that you can log in as an administrator and that you know the site’s URL. Keep the database name, user, password, host, and table prefix available. Check that the downloaded database file is readable and that the file backup contains the expected wp-content/uploads media and active theme.

5. Plan for downtime

Enable maintenance mode or choose a low-traffic window. A file replacement can briefly leave the site unavailable, and visitors should not submit forms or publish content while files are being swapped. If editors are working on the site, pause publishing until the checks are complete.

Choose the appropriate reinstall route

The goal and the access you have determine the safest route.

Option Access required Best use Control over preserved files
Dashboard reinstall Working administrator access and a dashboard that can reach the update screen A routine core refresh when the administration area is usable The process is automated; you still need a complete backup and must verify that custom files remain intact
Manual SFTP, FTP, or file-manager replacement Server file access through your host A damaged or inaccessible dashboard, or a need to control exactly which files are replaced Explicitly preserve wp-config.php, wp-content/, .htaccess, and identified custom files
Same-version core refresh Either route Repairing missing, altered, or corrupted core files without intentionally changing the release Core files are refreshed; a database schema change is generally not the objective
Version upgrade Either route, with a tested backup Moving to a newer WordPress release Core files change and WordPress may request a database upgrade after login
Self-managed backups Your own export and storage process Independent recovery and off-site copies you control You are responsible for making, checking, and retaining the backups
Managed hosting backups A host that provides restore tools Convenient rollback through the hosting provider Restore tooling depends on the provider; keep an independent export as well

If the dashboard is unavailable, use the manual route. If you are only repairing files, download the same intended WordPress version and language. If you are upgrading, treat the database prompt after the upload as an expected part of the release change.

Manual reinstall with SFTP, FTP, or a file manager

This method gives you the clearest control over what is replaced and works even when the WordPress dashboard will not load.

  1. Download the correct package. Obtain a fresh WordPress ZIP matching the version and language you intend to run. Extract it on your computer so you can see the clean wordpress directory and its core files.
  2. Put the site in maintenance mode. Prevent new comments, orders, uploads, or edits while the server files are changing. If you cannot enable a plugin-based maintenance screen, schedule the work for a quiet period.
  3. Connect to the correct document root. Use SFTP, FTP, or the host’s file manager and confirm that you are in the directory containing wp-config.php, wp-admin, wp-includes, and wp-content. Working in a neighboring directory can produce a convincing but ineffective upload.
  4. Preserve site-specific files. Do not overwrite wp-config.php or the existing wp-content/ directory. Keep uploads, plugins, themes, and custom code in place. Preserve .htaccess and custom files unless you have identified a particular file as a damaged core copy and have a backup of it.
  5. Replace the core. Upload the fresh package’s core files and directories over the old copies. The primary directories are the core files outside wp-content, including wp-admin and wp-includes, plus the root-level WordPress files. Do not replace your configuration or content directories with the package’s defaults.
  6. Handle failed overwrites safely. Some uploaders report success while leaving old files behind. If files will not overwrite reliably, delete the old core copies first and upload the fresh copies, while still retaining wp-config.php and the entire wp-content/ directory. Do not perform a blanket delete of the whole site.
  7. Check for custom root files. Compare the directory with your file backup. Leave custom files that are not part of WordPress core alone unless you know they are corrupted. A plugin, security tool, or host configuration may depend on them.
  8. Restore normal access and log in. Open the login page and sign in. WordPress may display a database-upgrade request, particularly after a version upgrade. Allow that process to finish and do not interrupt it.

Reinstall from the WordPress dashboard

When you can reach the administration area, use the dashboard’s update screen and its reinstall option for the installed release. This downloads and replaces core files without asking you to delete the database. Complete the database-and-files backup first anyway: an automated reinstall does not protect you from an unrelated plugin failure, a bad custom file, or a hosting mistake.

After the dashboard process completes, sign out and back in, open the front end, and perform the verification checks below. If the dashboard reinstall fails partway through or the site becomes inaccessible, switch to the manual replacement method using your saved package and backups.

Verify the site before declaring success

Test both public pages and administration screens. A successful login alone does not prove that uploads, rewrites, or extensions survived.

  • Review the site URL and administrator settings. Confirm that the database connection still uses the intended database, user, host, and table prefix.
  • Disable maintenance mode and test the site in a private browser window so cached administrator sessions do not hide a public error.

Troubleshoot errors that remain after the reinstall

The dashboard or front end still shows a fatal error

Temporarily disable plugins, then test again. If the error disappears, reactivate extensions one at a time to identify the faulty plugin. If it remains, switch temporarily to a default theme. A broken theme can produce the same symptom even when every core file is fresh.

Pages load but media or settings are missing

Check that the database export was the correct database and that wp-content/uploads was included in the file copy. A core reinstall does not recreate missing uploads or restore data from an unrelated database.

The site asks for a database upgrade

Allow the requested upgrade to complete when you intentionally installed a newer WordPress release. Keep the database export until you have verified the site, because the upgrade changes database structures and a rollback may require restoring both the previous files and the previous database.

Files appear unchanged after uploading

Use the host’s file manager or a reliable SFTP connection to confirm timestamps and file contents. If overwriting failed, remove only the old core copies and upload the clean package again. Preserve wp-config.php and wp-content/ throughout.

Reinstalling is different from moving WordPress to another server

A migration to another server generally does not require a reinstall. Move the backed-up files and database to the new host, update the configuration for the new database or site URL when necessary, and then test the installation. Replacing core files is appropriate when the existing WordPress code is damaged; it is not a prerequisite for changing servers.

Protect customizations from the next update

Direct edits to bundled default themes can be overwritten by a core or theme update. Keep custom template changes in a child theme or another separately maintained location. Store those custom files with your regular backup set so a future core refresh does not remove them.

Retain the verified database export and file archive until the site has operated normally for a while, then continue rotating recent copies. The official WordPress backup guidance, updated in 2026, recommends maintaining three to five recent backups in different locations. That practice gives you a recovery option before the next repair, upgrade, or migration.

Official guidance behind the procedure

“There are two parts to backing up your site: Database and Files.”

WordPress Developer Resources, Backups

“The important files to back up would be your wp-config.php file, which contains your settings and your wp-content directory (plus its contents) which contains all your theme and plugin files.”

WordPress Developer Resources, Backing Up Your WordPress Files

“Try downloading WordPress again, access your server via SFTP or FTP, or a file manager in your hosting account’s control panel, and delete then replace your copies of everything on the server except the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory with fresh copies from the download.”
