Why Rust can show a blank server browser
Rust does not receive a complete, permanent list from one central page. Facepunch describes a two-stage process: the Rust client asks Steam for Rust server records, then sends Source A2S queries to those servers. A server appears only when it answers those queries.

That design means an empty list is not proof that every Rust server is offline. Packet loss can prevent query replies, geographic positioning can return a sparse regional set, a server-side outage or attack can affect results, and a local firewall or connectivity problem can stop the queries. The result is user-dependent, so two players can see different lists at the same time.
Work through the player fixes in order. The first three address the most common visibility settings before you change security software or network hardware.

Player fix sequence
1. Set Steam’s server-browser ping limit to 5,000
- Open Steam.
- Choose Steam > Settings > In-Game.
- Find Server browser pings / minute.
- Set the value to at least 5000.
Facepunch’s 2024 guidance recommends a minimum of 5,000. This is a query-rate setting, not an estimate of how many Rust servers exist. A lower value can leave the client with too few responses while it is building the list.
2. Launch the ordinary Rust branch
Open Rust from your Steam library and select the normal Rust launch, not Rust Staging Branch. The staging branch is a separate test build and generally has fewer servers. If you accidentally launch it, close the game completely and start the standard Rust entry.
3. Remove filters and show empty servers
In Rust’s server browser, clear filters that restrict region, ping, tags, player count, map, or server type. Turn on Show Empty.
Valve hides empty servers by default unless they are in Official, Friends, History, or Favorites. That can make a healthy Community or Modded server disappear when it has no players. Changing the Show Empty setting also refreshes Community and Modded results, so toggle it even if you think the list is already unfiltered.
Check each category separately. A filter that leaves Official results visible can still exclude every Community or Modded result, and a server with no current players will not be returned unless the empty-server option allows it.
4. Leave beta branches and verify the installation
- In Steam, right-click Rust and choose Properties.
- Open Betas.
- Choose the opt-out or no-beta option.
- After Steam switches branches, open the installed-files section and run Verify integrity of game files.
A client on a beta branch can query a different or smaller server set, and damaged or mismatched files can prevent normal browser operation. Start Rust only after verification finishes.

5. Temporarily disable a VPN
Facepunch says the server list is populated geographically from the IP address’s geolocation. A VPN can place you in an unexpected region and produce a short or apparently empty list even when your physical connection is working.

Disconnect the VPN, quit Rust, restart Steam, and test the browser again. If the list returns, the VPN’s exit location or traffic handling is the likely cause. You can then decide whether to use a different exit location, keep the VPN off for Rust, or use direct connection to a known endpoint.
6. Restart the modem or router and test security software
Power-cycle the modem or router, wait for the connection to return, and relaunch Steam. A transient routing or packet-loss problem can stop A2S replies without preventing other websites or games from loading.
Also test whether antivirus or firewall software is blocking Steam or Rust. Use the security product’s temporary test mode rather than leaving protection disabled permanently. If the browser works only while protection is paused, create the appropriate application or network rule, restore protection, exit Steam completely, and start Steam again. Facepunch specifically advises an exit-and-restart after firewall or security changes.

Steam must be online and Rust must be fully updated. Pending client updates, an offline Steam session, or a failed secure connection can prevent the browser from receiving usable records. Steam’s support guidance identifies network and firewall conditions as causes of secure-connection failures, so resolve any Steam connectivity warning before troubleshooting individual servers.
How to tell a filter problem from a network problem
Use the browser’s categories and the type of result you can obtain to narrow the cause:
| Observation | Most likely area | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Official servers appear, but Community or Modded is blank | Category filters or hidden empty servers | Clear every filter and toggle Show Empty to refresh those categories. |
| Every category is empty after a branch change | Wrong Rust branch or beta selection | Launch standard Rust, opt out of Betas, then verify files. |
| The list changes when a VPN is disconnected | IP geolocation or VPN routing | Test without the VPN or use a different exit region. |
| The browser is empty and Steam reports connection or security errors | Firewall, antivirus, router, or packet loss | Restart network equipment and test security rules; restart Steam after changes. |
| A known endpoint accepts a direct connection but never appears in the browser | Query visibility or server-side browser configuration | Ask the operator to check the query port and UDP access. |
| Neither the browser nor a known endpoint works | Client, network, or server availability | Complete the player sequence, then check whether the server itself is online. |
The browser and direct connection test different things. A direct connection can succeed even when the discovery query is failing; conversely, a server that is down cannot be reached by either method.
Join a server without the browser
When you know the server’s IP address and port, return to Rust’s main menu and press F1 to open the console. Enter:

connect IP:Port
Replace IP:Port with the endpoint supplied by the server operator. Facepunch identifies BattleMetrics.com and Just-wiped.net as external places where players can find a Rust server IP and port. These are lookup options, not proof that a server is currently reachable; confirm the endpoint and status with the operator when possible.
A successful direct connection is useful evidence: it shows that the server can accept your game connection even if its browser query response is missing. If the command fails, record the exact error and test another known server to separate a single-server outage from a local problem.

Do not launch RustClient.exe directly as a workaround for an empty list. Facepunch states that direct launching disables Easy Anti-Cheat. That mode can connect only to EAC-unsecure servers, and EAC-unsecure servers do not appear in the normal Rust browser.
Use the ordinary EAC-enabled Rust launch for secure Official and Community servers. If you previously started the executable directly, close it and relaunch Rust through Steam so the correct anti-cheat mode is active.
If you operate the Rust server
When players cannot see one particular server, the operator must check the server’s query configuration rather than changing every player’s client.
- Open both ports over UDP. The server’s
server.portandserver.queryportmust be reachable from the public internet through the host firewall, router or NAT forwarding, and any provider security rules. - Use different port numbers. The game port and query port must not be the same.
- Do not omit the query port. The official Rust wiki identifies
server.queryportas required for browser visibility. - Check every network layer. A host firewall rule can allow the game port while blocking the query port; a cloud or hosting-provider security group can do the same even when the operating-system firewall looks correct.
After correcting the rules, restart the server if its configuration requires a restart and have a player refresh the browser. A direct connection that works while the server remains absent from search strongly points to query-port exposure or browser-registration behavior rather than the player’s game installation.
A practical decision path
- Start with Steam. Set Server browser pings / minute to 5000 or higher and make sure Steam is online.
- Confirm the build. Launch normal Rust, opt out of Betas, and verify files.
- Refresh discovery. Clear filters and enable
Show Emptyin each relevant category. - Remove location variables. Disconnect a VPN and retest from the normal public IP.
- Repair the local path. Restart the modem or router, test firewall and antivirus interference, then restart Steam after any rule change.
- Bypass discovery. Use F1 and
connect IP:Portwhen you have a confirmed endpoint. - Escalate to the operator. If direct connection works but search does not, have the operator verify distinct, publicly reachable UDP
server.portandserver.queryportvalues.
This order keeps player-controlled settings separate from server-owner controls and distinguishes a discovery failure from an inability to connect. It also avoids the EAC-unsecure launch mode, which cannot join the secure servers normally shown in Rust’s browser.
