If you want to clear every Workshop subscription for that game, choose Unsubscribe From All if the option is available. For leftover files, use the game developer’s cleanup instructions; there is no safe, universal folder to delete. Steam’s file verification can repair standard game files, but it is not a guaranteed way to remove every mod.
First, identify how the mods were installed
Steam Workshop subscriptions are tied to a particular game. Make sure you are viewing the Workshop and subscribed items for the title you intend to clean up—not another game in your library.
- Steam Workshop: Follow the unsubscribe steps below.
- A game’s own mod manager or a third-party installer: Use that manager’s removal option or the game developer’s instructions. Unsubscribing from Workshop does not remove mods installed by other methods.
Unsubscribe from the game’s Workshop mods
- Open the Steam Workshop page for the game.
- Select Browse > Subscribed Items. The navigation is documented in Facepunch’s instructions for Garry’s Mod; labels and layout may vary by game: Facepunch Studios: Unsubscribing from Workshop Addons outside of the game.
- Unsubscribe from individual items, or choose Unsubscribe From All if it is available and you intend to remove every Workshop subscription for that title.
- Let Steam process the changes, then quit the game. Valve’s Steamworks documentation says an item is removed after the game quits when the game uses the documented unsubscribe mechanism: Steam Workshop Implementation Guide.
Remove leftover files only with game-specific instructions
Unsubscribing may not remove every local Workshop file. For example, Dovetail Games warns that Train Simulator can leave Workshop content behind and provides a separate cleanup procedure for that title: How to completely remove all Workshop content.
That procedure’s folders and file details are specific to Train Simulator. Do not reuse its paths or delete similarly named files for another game. If you still find mod files, consult the developer’s current instructions for the exact title and mod source. Back up valuable saves before following deletion steps: whether a particular save remains compatible after mod removal depends on the game and the mods involved.

Verify standard Steam files if the game still needs repair
File verification checks the game’s standard installed files and can repair them; it is a repair step, not a universal mod-removal tool. To run it, open Steam Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam says verification can take several minutes. Some files may fail verification because they are local configuration files that should not be replaced: Steam Support: Verify Integrity of Game Files.
Check the game before reinstalling mods
After unsubscribing, completing any developer-approved cleanup, and verifying files if needed, launch the game and check whether it starts and behaves as expected before adding mods again. If the issue remains, contact the game’s developer support with the game title and how the mods were installed; those details determine the appropriate cleanup steps.
