WordPress normally sends a logged-out visit to /wp-admin/ to wp-login.php, which displays an HTML form. A native browser credential dialog usually comes from HTTP Basic Authentication configured by the web server, hosting panel, reverse proxy, staging gate, or a security plugin. Remove or narrow that rule rather than changing WordPress core files.

What the two login prompts mean
The normal WordPress login
When a visitor without a WordPress session opens /wp-admin/, WordPress ordinarily redirects the request to /wp-login.php. The page contains WordPress-branded fields, buttons, password-reset links and any custom login markup added by the site.

The browser-native dialog
A small credential window generated by the browser, often appearing before any page design loads, is an HTTP Basic Authentication challenge. The web server or an upstream service sends the challenge; WordPress has not rendered that box. Entering the credentials may let the request continue to the ordinary WordPress form, which is why the experience feels like logging in twice.
WordPress Developer Resources describes the intended effect this way: “Adding server-side password protection (such as BasicAuth) to /wp-admin/ adds a second layer of protection around your blog’s admin area, the login screen, and your files.” The extra prompt is therefore evidence of an additional protection layer, not a second WordPress account.

Find which layer issued the challenge
Check the layers in the order below. Do this before deleting files or changing wp-login.php.
- Confirm the prompt type. Compare the browser dialog with the site’s normal WordPress form. A browser-generated username/password box points to HTTP Basic Authentication; a styled page is part of WordPress or a plugin.
- Test the scope. Open the front page,
/wp-login.php,/wp-admin/, and a known frontend page in a private window. Note whether the dialog appears on one route, every administrative URL, the whole site, or only a staging hostname. - Check recent changes. Identify whether the popup began after an
.htaccessedit, an Nginx change, a hosting-panel password setting, a proxy deployment, a staging refresh, or a security-plugin configuration change. - Inspect server and hosting controls. Review the site’s
.htaccessfile, Nginx configuration, hosting-panel directory protection, maintenance gates and staging settings. A rule at any of these layers can run before WordPress. - Check security plugins. If a plugin offers HTTP authentication or a protected-login feature, its setting may be issuing the challenge. If you cannot enter wp-admin, disable that plugin from SFTP or the hosting file manager, then correct its configuration before reactivating it.
- Check proxies and redirects. A reverse proxy or firewall can challenge a request before it reaches the origin server. Also verify HTTPS,
WP_HOME,WP_SITEURL, caching and redirect behavior when the symptom is a loop rather than a credential box.
Choose the fix by configuration layer

Remove an accidental .htaccess protection rule
1. Make a recoverable copy
Download the current .htaccess through SFTP or the hosting file manager before editing it. If the change makes the site fail, restoring the previous copy is faster than reconstructing the file.

Look for the section that enables server-side username/password protection on the affected directory. Do not remove WordPress rewrite rules or unrelated redirects while editing. If the popup appeared immediately after an edit, restoring the prior file is the safest first action.

3. Remove or narrow the rule
For a public production site, remove the accidental challenge from /wp-admin/, /wp-login.php, or the site root as appropriate. If the extra layer is deliberate, narrow it to the intended staging or administrative path and document the exception.
4. Retest every dependent route
After saving, test the front end, /wp-login.php, /wp-admin/, /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, any frontend login rewrite, REST integration and the site’s normal sign-in flow. A rule that appears harmless on the dashboard can still challenge background requests.
Fix Nginx, hosting-panel and proxy protection
Nginx
When the site runs on Nginx, the challenge may be attached to a location block rather than a WordPress file. Remove the HTTP-auth setting from the affected location or move it to the staging host. Apply the configuration using the host’s supported reload process, then repeat the route tests.

Hosting panel
Many hosts expose a “password protect directory” or similar control. Check protection for the document root, wp-admin, wp-login.php and any subdomain. Disable only the entry that should not be protected; an unrelated folder may still need its gate.
Reverse proxy or firewall
If origin files contain no authentication rule and the dialog appears before WordPress responds, inspect the reverse proxy or firewall policy. Remove the policy or limit it to the intended hostname and paths. The proxy must allow the login page and all routes required by the site’s integrations.
Handle a staging-only popup
A staging copy commonly has an intentional password gate. If the protected hostname is not meant for public visitors, the popup is working as designed: use the configured staging credentials. If the copy has been moved to production or the gate is no longer wanted, remove the staging protection in the hosting panel, proxy or server configuration that created it.

Do not copy a staging authentication rule into production unintentionally. During a migration, compare the document-root rules, subdomain settings and proxy policies rather than assuming the WordPress files are responsible.
Disable a plugin when wp-admin is inaccessible
Use SFTP or the hosting file manager
- Open the WordPress installation’s
wp-content/pluginsdirectory. - Identify the security plugin that recently enabled HTTP authentication.
- Rename that plugin’s directory. Renaming prevents WordPress from loading it without deleting its files or settings.
- Open
/wp-login.phpand/wp-admin/again. If the browser dialog is gone, sign in and correct the plugin’s authentication setting. - Restore the original directory name only after the setting is safe, then test the complete login and integration path.
If renaming the suspected plugin has no effect, restore its directory name and continue checking server, hosting and proxy layers. More than one layer can be active, so removing a plugin may reveal another challenge rather than solve the entire problem.

Applying Basic Authentication to all of /wp-admin/ can protect more than the dashboard screen. Requests to wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, frontend login rewrites, REST integrations, mobile applications, Jetpack connections and single sign-on flows may also pass through that directory or depend on the login routes. A blanket rule can therefore produce failed requests, repeated credential prompts or integrations that appear logged out.

If an additional server layer is required for a private environment, define its scope deliberately and record the exceptions. At minimum, verify:
- the dashboard loads after the WordPress login;
wp-login.phpworks directly and through any custom login URL;- frontend forms that require authentication still submit;
admin-ajax.phprequests complete;- REST clients, mobile apps, Jetpack and SSO connections reach their required endpoints; and
- the public front end is not accidentally gated.
Clear stale authentication state and diagnose loops
After removing a rule, clear cookies and cached credentials for the site, close existing tabs, and retry in a private window. This removes stale browser authentication state; it cannot remove a server rule. If the browser still receives a challenge in a private window, continue inspecting the server, hosting, proxy and plugin layers.

If the symptom is a redirect loop instead of a popup, check the HTTPS setup, WP_HOME, WP_SITEURL, page and proxy caching, firewall behavior and redirects between the login URL and the dashboard. A loop and a Basic Auth dialog can have different causes, even when both prevent entry to wp-admin.
Recovery when the administrator is locked out
- Plugin-created challenge: rename the responsible plugin directory with SFTP or the host’s file manager, regain access, correct the setting and then reactivate it.
- Recent
.htaccessedit: restore the previous file or remove only the authentication block, leaving WordPress rewrites intact. - Staging gate: use the configured staging credentials or remove the gate from the staging control panel.
- Host-managed rule: ask hosting support to remove or narrow HTTP Basic Authentication for
/wp-admin/,/wp-login.phpand any required AJAX or API routes. - Proxy-managed rule: have the proxy administrator roll back the policy or change its path and hostname scope.
Do not delete WordPress core files and do not edit wp-login.php to suppress a browser challenge. The component issuing the HTTP challenge is outside that PHP login form.
Verification checklist
- Open a private browser window and visit the front page.
- Visit
/wp-login.php; confirm the expected WordPress form appears without an unexpected native dialog. - Visit
/wp-admin/while logged out; confirm the normal redirect and login behavior. - Sign in and load dashboard pages that use background requests.
- Test
wp-admin/admin-ajax.php, frontend login rewrites, REST integrations, mobile applications, Jetpack and SSO where the site uses them. - Check the public front end from a separate browser or network.
- Document the remaining protection rule, its intended scope and the recovery method for the next administrator.
When the popup is intentional
An extra prompt is not automatically a defect. A private staging site may intentionally use Basic Authentication as a second barrier, and WordPress explicitly recognizes server-side protection around the administrative area as a hardening measure. The problem is an unexpected, misplaced or overly broad rule. Keep it only when the protected environment and every required route have been tested with that additional layer in place.
